  1. We lost our house in Minot Monday night. Probably to the main level by now. Not looking forward to the messy cleanup, but I'm sure some folks on this board have been through it.

  2. Jack Michaels from Bismarck was hired today to take over Dan Hammers position at KFGO/KFAN as sports director. I think UND could work out the same agreement with him that we had with Hammer if Michaels wants to.

Wow, this is a bit of a surprise. I thought he went to Bismarck to be closer to his kids. If NDSU was smart, they'd insist on getting Michaels back to provide color commentary or be a sideline reporter. I think he's one of the best around.

  3. 66,000 x 17% = 11,200

The base only lost 3,000 people in ten years.

Grand Forks County is still missing 9,000 people it could/should have when compared to other regional cities, especially Bismarck, that for whatever reason.

Bismarck was below GF in population not that long ago and now will be double the size of Grand Forks relatively soon.

It will be interesting to see the official census numbers when they come out. Ward County will probably be right on the heels of Grand Forks County, and if the oil activity keeps up, will probably surpass it by 2020.

  4. I'm weary of players like that. Take for instance "Big Mike" Mathison on our roster right now. Kid was our big recruit out of Walhalla a few years ago and he hasn't done anything. Kid is always hurt, and doesn't do a thing when he gets in.

Proves a kid can look like a "can't miss" in ND Class B but have no future in basketball at the D1 level. A good indicator, although a bit superficial, seems to be where else interest is garnered. If the NDSU, USD, SDSU, or Big Sky School's of the world have no interest should we just because he has UND ties?

Excuse me for butting in here, but Mathiason was never a big recruit. He never put up numbers for North Border and was a project for you guys from the get-go. I don't even think he's on scholarship, is he?

  5. UND had one major factor that was different than the other Dakota schools. UND lost a head coach as they entered the transition period. They promoted a coach from within rather than hiring an existing head coach. The change in coaches set back the recruiting process a year or 2. And it has probably taken Mussman some time to adjust to the head job, just as it takes most people time to get up to speed when they are promoted. In spite of this, they have managed to have a winning record every year.

As we have seen, on the field success can change quickly. NDSU had several good years, went down quickly, and is having more success this year. SDSU made the playoffs last year and things aren't going quite as well this year. South Dakota hasn't had a better record during transition until this year. Their big claim to fame is a single win over Minnesota. And even UND has had both good and bad. They looked bad in a couple of games last year and then came back to play several pretty good games at the end of the season. I think it's a little early to write off UND's program or it's coach. Adjustments need to be made. They may need to change some personnel. But you don't make wholesale changes based on part of one season.

Ummm, so did NDSU. Bohl's first year was our exploratory year. I really don't think replacing a coach is that big of a factor; obviously the important thing is to hire the right guy. I'm not invested in your program like you guys are, so I can't say if Mussman is that guy or not.

  6. To only be up 2% with a 12% grad enrollment increase and a relatively small senior class, NDSU's freshman class must have dropped rather substantially. Without all the tuition waivers Chapman was granting, freshman are not as inclined to enroll there. Since the sophomore and junior classes at NDSU are huge, once those two classes begin graduating, NDSU enrollment will likely decline temporarily.

LOL. Most of the tuition waivers were granted to grad students.

  7. Again, the internet message board police are out in full force.

    Show me the bylaws.

What is really telling is just how much NDSU and SDSU fans fear the thought of UND and USD being equal conference partners, and despise the thought of moving fully behind the Summit League when out of the other side of their mouth they brag it up.

Actually, what most NDSU fans fear is the loss of the autobid and a return to the scheduling woes we faced when we were members of the GWFC. Having 6 teams doesn't guarantee an autobid.

  8. Many critical comments attached to that article. It bet Mac will be glad to get out of Iowa! I hope he shows them up by winning big at Creighton!

Mac underperformed at ISU. This is really a win-win for both parties. ISU gets a new coach without having to buy out his contract and Mac gets a pretty sweet gig in a good conference with a great long-term contract.

  9. Headline seems to be a tad misleading. From the article. "The money will not come from taxpayer funds or tuition dollars. It comes from interest income, auxiliary revenues and Coke and Pepsi commissions."

Although I do think the Development Foundation is absolutely wrong on this one. They should be responsible for providing the balance of the funds to cover the cost overruns.

  10. Agree. If NDSU schedules a 4-year agreement with USD, NDSU and Taylor will be deservedly trashed big time in the media. Taylor must think he has some type of political immunity, because legislators of all stripes (SU or UND grads) would not look kindly on that type of chicken**** action, especially after he talked so mouch about wanting a schedule with nationally established FCS programs.

Please. Non-alums west of the RRV don't really care that much about this rivalry. Sure, they would maybe watch on tv if it was on but they don't live or die over it. There would be a few people in the Grand Forks media (cough, Ryan Bakken, cough) who would make some snide remarks but it wouldn't be as big of a deal as you're making it out to be.

  11. I think it's more difficult to find FCS caliber d-linemen than it is FCS caliber linebackers in this region. Not counting juco's, I would say NDSU has had 3-4 FCS caliber d-linemen in the last 3-5 years, while they have had 5-6 FCS caliber linebackers. I wish NDSU would switch to the 3-4.

  12. Fargo and West Fargo would be better served to have joint school districts to mimize building: Fargo North could house Harwood kids instead of being half empty and a new HS in SW Fargo should serve both districts.

There was an opinion piece by Doug Burgum in the Forum today espousing that exact view. Really makes a lot of sense.

  13. I don't want to distract the conversation away from demographics too much, but I'm curious if there are going to be family farms left in ND? Or is it all going to be Cargill, Monsanto, etc.?

Saw an interesting documentory where Monsanto threatened to sue the state of ND if it refused to allow GMO wheat (of course this movie was back in 04..not sure what's gone on since then). And another point the movie made was that some states, including SD and NE, have made it illegal for any farms other than family farms to exist (might need to be taken with a grain of salt there). Is that true and if so why hasn't ND jumped on that wagon?

The point of all this is where Jim points out that perhaps older people are moving into the city. That would make sense to me if the family farms are going extinct. If people aren't out farming, then they have little choice but to move into the city for work/housing.

North Dakota has anti-corporate farming laws as well. Google "North Dakota Century Code" and it won't be hard to find.

  14. KXMC-TV Minot on DII Move

    KFYR Report

Does seem like a 16-team NSIC is likely, with Minot State and Sioux Falls being added. DII is only allowing 10 teams in per year, so there still may be some barriers.

Always thought Minot State would be a natural for hockey. Now that they may be heading to DII they could sponsor it, if there was ever a league for them.

My wife works at Minot State, and has attended a few of the forums they have been holding. IMO, Minot State fits really well in DII providing they get into a league. And the new wellness center looks very impressive.

  15. Not yet by the Cass County State's Attorney it hasn't.

    And he had a roommate.

    And he had teammates.

And every dealer has folks he sells to.

Who knew what and when did they know it.

The State's Attorney won't say "he's been cut loose by Coach Bohl" and be done with this.

Those are the sounds of another "oh-crap" loading up.

This is where the "and providing no other current members of the team are implicated" part comes in. :D Obviously, if what you said comes to fruition it will be a much bigger story.

  16. Never forget the "atta-boy/oh-crap" rule: Just one "oh-crap" wipes out thousands of "atta-boys".

Volleyball, basketball, and now softball, got you some atta-boys around the region.

Thanks to Schultenover, your marquee sport is now tied to the phrases "dealing marijuana" and "'large quantities' of marijuana" --> Oh-crap.

Believe what you will, but this "oh-crap", like every, follows the rule.

Possibly, but the Schultenover problem has already been dealt with, and providing no other current members of the team are implicated the story really has nowhere has to go. I think people will remember this past Bison sports' season (including the softball team's accomplishments) as a very good one.

  17. IMO, the 1990-91 team was the best UND men's basketball team (I'm too young to have seen any of the Phil Jackson teams, though). The starting lineup that year was:

    C Vonesh, sr.

    PF Gardner, fr.

    SF Guldseth, soph.

    SG Jacobson, soph.

    PG Burkett, sr.

About the only "weakness" I think that team might face by today's standards is 3-point shooting. It's too bad that Mike Boschee never red-shirted, because if you added him to that team it would be have been even better.

Thanks, I was off by a year or two on Vonesh's age; for some reason I thought he was the same grade as Ayinla and Boschee. I think the key difference in a hypothetical mathcup of that team vs. the current NDSU squad is the Bison have four seniors where the Sioux have a young Gardner and Guldseth. Tvedt would probably guard Guldseth, Winks on Gardner. IMO, points would be hard for the Sioux to come by; Bison by 10.

Edit: That's a pretty amazing lineup for a D2 team. IMO, four legitimate players with DI talent (Vonesh, Guldseth, Gardner, and Burkett).

  18. You said the best in your first post.

Vonesh, Gulseth, Robertson, Gardner, Rico Burkett, Mike Boschee, Ben Jacobson would not lose 4 out of 5 to this Bison team. You are on crack if you really believe that. This SU team has no one to guard Gully or Vonesh. UND in 6 games, easy!!!

It's not like all those guys were in their prime at the same time. I'm going off memory here, but I think when Vonesh was a senior, Rico Burkett was the pg and Jacobson came off the bence as a Frosh. Gardner and Jacobson were in the same class, but didn't Gardner redshirt? I think UND's most talented team of that era was when Jacobson and Guldseth were seniors, with a supporting cast of Johnson, Gardner, and Powell. That would have been an interesting matchup with this NDSU team, but I think the Bison would have superior guard play and win about 60% of the time.

  19. Seriously, you guys are going to have a 214 page thread about the legitimacy of a fistfight being classified a felony if you keep playing into MplsBison's hand. :D Just remember, there was a reason he was voted the most annoying poster on AGS.

  20. Siouxmamma- I think I know which place you are referring to and I believe that it closed...he was the one in the accident woth a train? and he was injured really bad and he built the restaurant with his money?

You guys are thinking of Sportsworld, which no longer exists. Chad Yale started it, but sold out. The building is now occupied by Up the Creek and Space Aliens.

  21. First, get a membership to Minot Country Club. A top 5 golf course in the state. Second, cherish every day you get to play cause their is a limited number. Finally, go south from November 15th to March 15th. Do those 3 things and you'll love living in North Dakota. ???

I moved the family to Minot after swearing I would never move back home. I have to say I like it about 100X better than I ever thought I would. Lots of places to golf, three pretty decent-sized lakes within a couple of hours. Just close your eyes through certain parts of town and you'll be set.
