  1. No, but the team has been selected after last weekend's final tryout camp. I do not know all of the roster, but local players include Marc Mihulka of GF Red River, Marc Harrie, Paul Weisgarber and Grant Larson of Fargo, veterans Jon Halstenson and Elliott Oklund from Fargo, Robby Phillip of Thief River Falls, Andrew Muir of Kittson, and Beau Christian of Moorhead. Paul Weisgarber is on the 25 man roster for Waterloo of the USHL, and the final roster should be set after this weekend. Robby Phillip made the Indiana Ice, but may not go. Jeff Foss of Moorhead made the Tri-City roster, but will return to Moorhead for his senior year.

I believe Grant Larson is attending St Thomas and could potentially play hockey there as well.

  2. Steady Eddy is very proud to be a Sioux (attended NC two years ago) and I would bet that Dayn would be attending UND in a year or two.

Rode the plane with Dayn on his way up here to try out. He's a great kid and told me one of his goals is to play for the Sioux. No question he will be heading to UND if he continues to develop and improve to a D1 caliber goalie.

  3. Hopefully Okposo will have a season more similar to the one Wheeler had as a freshman. Although I do think in reality he will be much better than Wheeler as a freshman. Especially as well as he played in the USHL.

Agreed. Crossing my fingers that Wheeler remains a bust this year. Nice first rounder Wayne.... ???

  4. Probably the two best in the nation. I predict one of those two will win the Hobey. When Kessel signs the Gophers won't have a single forward on the same level of those two.

Mn has quality prospects coming in so they'll be sufficiently reloaded even if PK signs. Okposo poses the skills to have a similar freshman year to Oshie, Toews, or Kessel. I still think they'll be the front-runner and team to beat at the start of the season.

  5. Population differences and passion for the sport aside, the only comparison you need to make is Fargo vs. Moorhead. Moorhead provides more development opportunity in their skating programs and make ice more available year round. Fargo doesn't have the same level of commitment to the sport.

  6. It'll never happen because money talks, but the more I read and hear about the current state of affairs and unorthodox decision makers in the Blackhawks organization, the more I'd (selfishly) like to see JT stay 4 yrs, become a free agent, and solidify his future with a better organization than to subject himself to years of mismanagement struggles. His future in the NHL could certainly be jeopardized with guys like Tallon calling the shots. His parents seem to have provided exceptional guidance so far in his career. Hope that will continue as he prepares for the next level.

  7. There's an article on the NHL draft in the new ESPN the Magazine that showed up in my mailbox yesterday. (Mario Williams cover) The writer follows the Blue Jackets through the combine to the draft. It's a must read and worth the $4.99 if you can't find it online. The article focuses on EJ, Kessel, and Brassard but Toews is mentioned numerous times. The writer kind of turns it into a Kessel-bash for most of the article. He paints him as a malcontent who's lazy and doesn't get along with teammates based on the Blue Jackets interviews. A very interesting read into what the players go through during those couple of weeks until draft.

Nice to read about his character flaws but bottom line, if Kessel returns to Mn, they'll be extremely difficult to de-throne them as WCHA Champs and a #1 seed in the NCAAs. We may need to put up with all their hype until someone like Mercyhurst ousts them in the first round.

  8. Not meant as a slam, but how much better is Aaron Marvin at this stage of his career than Lee Marvin was? It would be nice to get local guys but it is not good to pick someone solely because they are local. If he is better than I think, then hats off to St Cloud as they have stole two recruits that many thought were coming to UND (Christian and Marvin). I think that two or three years down the line, Jordy is the one that UND will wish that they got not Aaron Marvin.

Lee Marvin is a much better actor

  9. Character? As a freshman, he developed into one of the leaders on a Fighting Sioux squad loaded with talent, including 2004 1st round picks Drew Stafford and Travis Zajac. North Dakota lost to eventual NCAA champion Wisconsin in the Frozen Four semifinals.

if we only could have gotten past Wisconsin at the Frozen Four.....

  10. i hear ya but we have been to 4 frozen four's in the last 7 years if im not mistaken and have played in 3 title games and won 1 and lost obviously this last april in the semifinals, not to shabby if you ask me, man are we spoiled :D it could be a hell of a lot worse.......i wont even mention any other schools :D

We are spoiled and I like that, however I think our goal is to generate titles. Agreed that 4 FFs in 7 years is great, but all I'm saying is that if our recruiting strategy is to get blue-chippers, we need to make the most of their abilities in a short period of time. Otherwise we're constantly rebuilding. In the early years of Gino's reign, we lost players early too, but he made the most of it while they were here. Same thing with Blaiser. DH and his staff are tremendous recruiters and good coaches. Too soon to tell how DH's reign will play out (so far it's been beyond expectations), but if the BChip strategy of recruiting is our philosophy, we'll need great coaching to hang #8. No need to panic unless we lose Toews, Oshie and Lee this summer.

  11. Then it all falls back on coaching/recruiting. Having the ability through the history of the program and the facilities to recruit blue chip talent makes a coaches job pretty easy but winning titles is a completely different animal.

  12. Hopefully Porter will have a great senior season this upcoming year. He certainly has the ability to have a breakout season.

Porter would be great if the net were twice as big. Unless he improves on his scoring ability, he'll be nothing more than a grind line guy which suits him well. It would be nice to see him be able to finish better on scoring chances. Maybe lining up with better playmakers will help.....Guess we'll see.

  13. "on the record" is about as official as me saying that i'm gonna try out for the sioux next year. all it means is that if there have been offers, they aren't good enough and they are working on it, the only thing that will matter is who shows up for captains practice and who hak says makes his squad.

i apologize for this all being one big quote as it is several different peoples posts, but

there are different levels for different years of draft picks because they were signed under the old cba, new draft picks 05 on up are all subject to the same terms. as far as free agents go....my understanding is they are subject to free agent minimums based on number of years in the league, years with a team, among other variable, but the high end for these college players being undrafted free agents is lower than those drafted

Thanks for the info. As you probably summized, I was wondering if there could be a financial benefit to Drew if he stayed and became a free agent.

By the way, Brady Murray told me he was definitely coming back last year at the frozen four. Lets face it, money is powerful. I for one would love to see Drew stay and take a run at the Hobey. It would be rather special and potentially unprecedented to have 3 Hobey finalists on the same team.

    Good luck Drew

  14. "respectfully", would you be kind enough to look up those figs for me? wait......here it is....

There are no more $900,000 signing bonuses.

2004 Draft Picks can receive the maximum $688,940 in the first two years of the contract, and $984,200 in the third year under the terms of the NHL Collective Bargaining Agreement. In addition to salary, players can receive a signing bonus of $590,520, to be paid in the first two years of the contract, and has the potential to earn the maximum entry-level performance bonuses, totaling $850,000 per year.

does this cap apply to free agency as well? foregive me if this is a dumb question, I could care less about the NHL..

  15. Sorry, can't agree with you on that. At the beginning of the season, I didn't like the idea of him being selected as team captain. However, he definitely showed leadership skills this year and changed my opinion of that. He didn't play any worse than anyone else. Greene took a terrible call in last years final, but I didn't look down on him either. Matt's done a wonderful job this year, and where I do see him leaving the team, I really would like to see him back for his senior year.

He's right Smaby $ucks......oh wait he had a good check on a guy...whoops, nope, he didn't......The Simpsons are on at 7pm Sat on Fox .... loser

  16. Exactly. Hirsch, Kessel, Wheeler, Gordon, Stoa, Okposo, Howe, Chucko, etc. The forwards are not a concern. Defense is the key to next season. I doubt there's another team in the country who will be adding two elite d-men like Johnson(hopefully) and Hagemo to their roster. That will be a HUGE help.

Overall the defense will be better next year and if Frazee steps it up, so will the goaltending. Like I said before, the gophers will always have skilled, good skating forwards who will perform well.

Unfortunately, talent that doesn't emerge through hard work has a high probability of being diluted. Happens to every team that recruits blue chip players. Potulny and Irmen's goals will easily be replaced by the likes of, Kessel, Wheeler, Gordon, and Stoa etc. It all depends how the players respond to their assigned roles. Kessel will get 60+ pts next season, Wheeler seems to be somewhat lazy so who knows how he'll perform, Gordon is progressing nicely and Stoa should be able to equal what Irmen did this year. Every team has question marks at the beginning of the season and most of them have become cliches. The defensive corps is not bad but Hagemo will be done one hard hit into the season and the only thing Frazee will be stepping up to is a barstool. I think the biggest question mark for the gophers is when will Lucia get them playing together as a group the way he did a few yrs ago. The hope of rejuvinated chemistry is what Mn needs, not goals. You can't win on talent alone as witnessed March 24th, 2006. But for now, the Sioux have the chemistry aspect of their game clicking because of the character of the players and the attitude development by the coaches. I'm really proud of their accomplishments this year. Win or lose, all 4 teams competing this weekend will have a different look to them next season because of early departures.

    GO SIOUX!
