  1. Why is gas so expensive here? We went to northern MN over the holiday weekend, and the small towns like McIntosh, Erskine, and some others were selling gas for $3.14/gal. GF was anywhere between $3.29 to 3.34/gal. depending on where you went. The thing now is, even though the holiday weekend is over, gas still hasn't gone down like it should be. I'm really getting tired of the price gouging in this town, and yes, it is price gouging!!

It isn't quite that simple. Oil futures are traded on the NYMEX therefore the price of oil is going to be negotiated there. Once the futures "expire" the oil will be delivered to some city (I'm drawing a blank on which one and dont want to look it up) in Oklahoma.

In small towns like that you will see a wide variance in prices, again dependent on when they purchased their oil futures.

Since the bigger companies will buy their oil daily you will see their prices fall in line with what oil/gas is trading at.

Generally a rule of thumb is add about 65-75 cents (gas tax) on what gas is trading at. This will be what you will/should see at the pump.

  2. Riddle me this.....The government makes a lot of money on people buying gas because of the "gax tax"

Yet they encourage people to buy hybrids, carpool, etc.....Meaning less money for the government that they need to make up in another way.

The government makes alot of money on people?

First of all the goverment is a representation of the population, so you are pretty much saying the people are making money on people buying gas.

Second, all money that comes in (and more) goes out in some way, shape or form. Therefore, all tax dollars that come out of the gas tax goes towards stuff such as road construction.

It is kind of tough for the "government" to profit off the people. That is kind of like saying someone is profiting off of themself.

  3. who may not be a regular in the lineup, he lost his d spot and they just stuck him at forward really

I'm still surprised with that move. He is very valueable against teams with good team speed i.e (Gophers, Maine, Michigan). The only defenseman that has better skating skills or puck handeling skills is Chorney.

  4. Dude I just read what you wrote. That is awesome. Of course the tax and spend people are going to be all over you.

Redistribution of wealth is what we are in for if we are not careful.

Goon agreeing with me? What is this a first?

  5. I think you may have misunderstood me. I do not condone the concept of welfare. It sickens me that some lazy people out there live off the system. The problem I have is that too many people work their butts off for a minimal salary while the fortunate few have obscenely high-paying jobs in which they blow off to spend their afternoons schmoozing with elitists on the golf course more often than not. Obviously some jobs are worth more pay than others, but the descrepancy between the have's and the have-not's is way too much for my liking. If you took 5% off the average yearly earnings of the top 10% they would still be able to maintain their fatcat lifestyle, but at the same time an extra 5% added on to their average yearly salaries would really help out the middle to lower class. Straight-up socialism obviously isn't the answer, but anybody who denies that capitalism breeds greed and selfishness is ignorant. I think a happy medium somewhere between those two extremes would be better than either one or the other. Let me just put it this way... the NFL has a much better system than Major League Baseball.

"If you took 5% off the average yearly earnings of the top 10% they would still be able to maintain their fatcat lifestyle, but at the same time an extra 5% added on to their average yearly salaries would really help out the middle to lower class."

Well this system is already in place it is called the tax system. The top 10% pay 37% and the bottom 40% pay 0%. This is a conservative tax system and I think it is whack. The top 40% of taxpayers pay over 99% of all income tax. Just think if the liberals get in the white house, I could easily see the top 10% paying 100% of their income. I could see them trying to push legislation to have the top 40% pay everyone else to live in the country.

  6. No, I'm saying capitalism rewards those who show pure greed and selfishness by screwing people out of their hard-earned money. Ticketmaster would be a great example of what I'm referring to.

No one is forceing anyone to go to ticketmaster. They choose to use that service, therefore the company will do well. If you don't like Ticketmaster don't use their service, that is one of the few ways you can hurt their business.

  7. I'm not Redwing, but I'll rank them in my eyes. Chorney, Bina, Lee, Genoway, Finley, Jones, and Radke. I used total points, +/-, and my personal opinion, with my personal opinion holding the most weight in making my decisions. There are certain games when I think certain players played better than others, but I tried to think of the overall season. I'll also mention that I like everyone of our defensemen right now and don't think any of them are lousy, regardless of how I ranked them.

Here is my ranking: Chorney, Bina, Radke, Genoway, Jones, Lee or Finley.

I use skill level and overall hockey sense as my greatest criteria.

  8. He's also on the most ideal line. The top line is getting the other teams top defensive line. Buffalo's top defensive line is taking the other team's top offensive line. Buffalo's 2nd line is a lot more potent offensively than most other teams 2nd line, and are usually playing against the other teams 2nd line. He's definitely got offensive talent. No one argues that. However, when you're on a line that requires the other team to play defense the majority of the shift, it limits the amount of time he has to play defense.

Let me guess you guys think Stafford is better than Vanek?

  9. Don't respond to Lives to play. He's a Lee "Hater" and there's really no rationalizing with him. I agree with you though, Lee leaving would be a huge blow to the team. He's never been worse than 3rd in the team in scoring by defenseman.

As for not giving Marto a chance, well, apart from the "haters" piping in, who would you bench for Marto? For Marto's freshman year, I don't see him getting much ice time because there is simply too much talent already in the lineup and experienced talent as well. I doubt he'll be a 4 year bench warmer, but he's not going to jump into the game right away either. I expect not to see much of Marto his freshman year.

Red wing, I'm interested in seeing how you would rank the defenseman on the team last year.

  10. What exactly is American capitalism anyways? The rich get richer at the expense of the middle class? I think these current gas prices are an example of the concept of capitalism being corrupted with greed and selfishness. It was a good idea in the beginning, but it has gotten out of hand. Our entire economy is going to start suffering pretty soon with 10% of the people controlling 90% of the wealth.

Wow Dave, Hillary Clinton thinks your statement is too liberal.

Let's look at Bill Gates for a second. His company sells a product that 90% of consumers use or will use. Now if you want to hurt Bill Gates then stop buying computers that have windows operating systems or any other microsoft products.

Are you saying that capitalism rewards the people that work hard or work smart? If so I would agree.

If you are saying that Bill Gates and other wealthy people get rich off of people buying their products/services? Again I would agree.

Well I'd be interested in hearing how you would change this "problem" of people like Bill Gates getting wealthy off of consumers buying his product.

Remember that the top 10% already pay 70+% of all income tax.

  11. Welcome to siouxsports mburtonk, just a reminder, the REA and the University of North Dakota are both businesses, and are always looking to make a profit. I'm a student and do not mind at all paying $6 bucks a ticket, it is a steal, compared to the rest of the arena. Have fun getting tickets every week if they were free, then your just asking every student to get tickets, and probably less student attendance during games IMO due to the game now being at the student's convience.

Back to the topic at hand, I'm glad to see the National Don't Buy Gas Day worked, as most analysts predicted prices would go up due to the increased demand the day after, looks like up .15 cents in Grand Forks today.

Lastly yesterday I was watching WGN News at Noon, and outside of Chicago they are converting cars to complete electricity, and its like a tenth of the cost. Also the state of Illinois is giving people $4000 if they convert their vehicles. Only downside, cars only get 50 miles to a charge, but if you stay in Grand Forks most of the time, it wouldn't affect most people.

Well another downside is that batteries don't work real well when it is -10 outside. So now we have classic dilemma, CO2 curve supporters say that more CO2 in the atmosphere will heat up the earth. So they don't want people to use gasoline because it contributes to higher CO2 levels. But one of the best alternatives to gasoline requires warmer climates to maximize effeciency.

  12. The Ralph (according to their website) can seat 11,640 people for a hockey game. First come, first served.

Fair enough, but unless you are going to allow all 8,000 students in for free than you are back tracking on your previous point.

What you are saying is fine but don't sugar-coat it. If you let students in for free the other ticket holders will pay more. Now if you let more students in for free than the ticketholders will pay an even higher premium.

  13. It's our hockey team, isn't it?

Ok, Let's say the Gophers are in town and 8,000 students want to go to the game for free? What would you propose?

  14. Let's just stop buying gas altogether then.

It still angers me that they cap the wheat prices, and not the gas prices.

"Let's just stop buying gas altogether then."

If you don't want to pay high gas prices you don't need anyone else to stop driving. If you aren't buying gas than the high prices won't effect you. Since you will still buy gas and you won't stop driving than it your system will not benefit you at all.

"It still angers me that they cap the wheat prices, and not the gas prices."

Why stop at capping gas prices? Let's cap the price of everything. Let's start telling the REA that they can't charge more than 5 dollars a ticket. Let's start telling Dell that they can't charge more than $20 for a computer.

  15. True, but in this case, Lives to play is right.

Ottawa looks good and Buffalo looks like the Minnesota Wild. Keeps the games tight, but when it comes to offensive play, juuuuuuuuuust can't do it. And that's sad considering they came into this series as the best offensive team left playing and among the top scoring teams in the NHL.

Otttawa's first line has been red-hot. Their offensive output during the playoffs is amazing considering they often draw the other teams top line. They are also very under-rated defensivly: Preissing, Redden, and Phillips are all big time defensemen. Goaltending has been solid so far but Emery could easy fold up at anytime. Martin Gerber is very capable, he led the fins (I believe) to olympic gold.

  16. They are going to run into a buffalo buzz saw that is four lines deep. They will be under attack at all times.

If Neil touches one of the Buffalo Skilled players I predict a Blood Bath. Lindy will not put up with it.

    ?

  17. I'm as critical of any goaltender that stood on his head against SCSU as anyone.

Hey Lives to play answer this:

Since stats are an obvious foundation for all your disrespect:

Look back on this year and answer this:

Which UND goaltender lead the Sioux during the regular season in number of times named to a Player of the Week Honor (either defensive or rookie).

Give you a hint because I can't wait:

    It's not Walski or Lamoreaux.

Kinda odd when the only goaltender to recieve regular season honors from the league is a guy who should be a third stringer, no?

Seriously, dude, I am not about the changing of the name and the name calling like others here (and you're prone to do so in response it appears, but I digress), but you're going to HAVE to figure out a way to get over your fixation against Grieco.

Instead of trying to find fault in players and fans who support those players by citing frivilous and sketchy reasoning ("biased aganst players from North Dakota" Ah... give me an F-in break), realize that Walski is a great addition to the Sioux but is destined to be only a third string goaltender and a backup for Phil and Anthony. A much needed position, but if you think Walski is going to get playing time in a game that counts, then ask yourself how good the last Sioux team was that had to utilize their third stringer in regular season games? I don't think we need another 2001-2002 seasion.

And, yeah, I am fixated against fans who are too preoccupied trying to find fault with players on a team they supposedly root for to see the positives they bring to the team and then make arguments that are idiotic or impractical (SIGN X!! I hope Y leaves soon! Let Q play, what do we have to lose?) Really... who knows what Walski is capable of but I don't care as long as Grieco and Phil are on the team and Hakstol is making the decision not to play Walski. But then, I bet Hakstol has a thing against North Dakota players as well.

Which goalie let in 4 goals in the first period against UAA and then redeemed himself the next night and only let in 4 goals in the whole game?

Which goalie let in 9 goals in 2 games against Mankato?

Which goalie had a 3.49 GAA last season?

Give you a hint because I can't wait:

    It's not Walski or Lamoreaux.

You cling to the SCSU series where he only let in 3 goals, My knock is his consistency. You think he played consistently and I don't thats the main difference.
