  1. http://www.mssu.edu/athletics/general/bruggemanadhire.htm Missouri Southern names Jared Bruggeman as next Director of Athletics Joplin, Mo. - Missouri Southern State University has announced that current Associate Director of Athletics at Northern Arizona University Jared Bruggeman will be the next Director of Athletics at MSSU, replacing Sallie Beard who is retiring at the end of the month. Bruggeman will start his duties at Southern on July 6 and will be introduced to the public and media in a press conference on June 17 at 3:30 pm in room 413 of Spiva Library on the campus of Missouri Southern. Bruggeman and his wife, Maria, will be in attendance at the event. "I am very excited about this opportunity," Bruggeman said. "I
  2. He couldn't beat out Dean Smith anyway... or should I say Dr. Smith...? no JD...
  3. I agree. He is a very interesting and dedicated man. North Dakota ties are important, particulary when dealing with the State Budgeting system.
  4. PS- Good luck finding a new AD under the current reporting structure and the manner in which the last firing was handled...
  5. Not that I am a fan of Buning or Harmeson, but you need to seriously sit back and reconsider your thoughts on Phil Harmeson. Just because someone is a FAR doesn't mean they are qualified to run an athletic department anymore than a city councilperson is qualified to be a the city police chief. The FAR by definition is a representative of the faculty of a university to assist with the athletic component of an institution. They are there to give justification to an athletic department and legitimize the academics that are occuring but they are not to run an athletic department. The point being, that a "real FAR" doesn't deal with athletic issues such as staffing and contracts but rather serves at the pleasure of a president to represent the academic side of an institution. An FAR should never, under any circumstances be involved in personnel issues with staffing... Secondly, the NCAA is going to frown upon a VP being appointed between the AD and the president. That does go against the intent of the process. That being said, in many institutions the AD is designated a VP or sits at that same level of institutional managment. Refer to Arizona State University for an example... That being said, UND handled this whole thing horribly. AD's get fired everyday around the country. Very rarely does it make the NACDA report due to the manner in which it is handled. The fact the UND had to send out a letter to Division I institutions in the country about the problems occuring and how they are still progressing towards Div. I so please schedule us is a testimate to how poorly it was handled. That, unfortunately, is PAR for the course for UND...
  6. QUOTE(Bison Dan @ Jan 26 2006, 09:28 AM) QUOTE(The Sicatoka @ Jan 26 2006, 08:09 AM) With NDSU putting money into the BSA that tells me that there isn't a new arena on their short-term or mid-term horizons. That means that Bina's team, oops, sorry, formerly Bina's team, stays in the Benson-Bunker Fieldhouse for the foreseeable. Yeah, renovated locker rooms, but it's still what it is (and that's not very good, especially if there's a chance you'd have to start recruiting against The Betty as a home court). What world do you live in? DI volleyball doesn't recruit against dii volleyball, especially the quality of UND's volleyball teams. See above for reading comprehension help. (Clayton Hoyt didn't need the help.) Let's be honest, the Sioux would have likely beaten the Bison this year. The Bison were a struggling program and the Sioux just missed the DII regionals. That being said, I would hardly fault Coach Bina for that, rather poor assistant coaches in the recruiting process and significant injuries to their starting roster. It's not like either team lost to Mayville!
  7. A fan politely coughs, and then the quicky does the golf clap.
  8. First off, this whole discussion chain is flawed in many respects. FB games and their contracts are scheduled years in advance. Ferris state and Winona state are examples of that. With that, their are many negotiations that go with offers. In that process NCAA rules change, along with the rules to rankings and playoff contentions. In the early negotiations that occured between the rivals, the rules were changing with regards to playoff penalties and possibilities with win-losses. Many people were not happy with NDSU's decision to go DIAA and wanted to penalize them for their decision, in partiular because of their lack of consultation with their major rival as a partner in the process. That being said, the rivalry was not ignored nor forgotten, just the rules were different. I would not pretend to understand the complexities is this scenario, but the fact remains, as I have stated from day one, we cannot discontinue the rivalry. The delay in RT's response to the original proposal from NDSU was based on many factors including: 1. The NCAA was working on a point system that could hurt DII schools playing non-DII schools 2. The input of many sources, including FB staff, other coaching staff, admin and the presidents thoughts. 3. Rearrange of schedules, since FB schedules and contracts are signed years in advance. 4. The uncertainty of what the transition of NDSU to DI would do 5. The increased scholarship limit and how fast NDSU would gain an advantage over UND 6. I hate to say, but the anger over NDSU going DI and not discussing a deal to make a package deal with UND. (This could be the biggest factor of all).
  9. Why Mike Fitzer? What is the connection. Rico, a great guy, has struggled at Wayne State after Mac left. Mac (the Univ. of Northern Iowa), would obviously be a great choice, but he will go on, at some point to bigger and better things, as he is hottest item in DI (small school), with wins against ISU and Iowa. What about Big Ben with UNI? If UND goes DI, would he come back?
  10. I am guessing that she had a confrontation that ended with the words, "if you don't like it here, then feel free to resign". That being said she did. Coach Bina is a great coach and I think that NDSU just missed the boat. Coach Bruggeman, until recently, didn't have the history of success or facilities to work with. I wonder if that didn't play a factor or the Division I and lack of success at that level caused the rift. Either way, NDSU lost one of their most successful coaches, including Bucky, Larson and Ruley.
  11. Interesting enough, it brought up good discussion in the big sky with that win. Wins like that, as unlikely as they are, bring up the discussion of UND and NDSU as big sky teams. The issue still remains, how to incorporate these teams into the league without distrubting the leagues balance of power and revenue.
  12. I saw the same thing and I was amongst a lot of friends who have heard my rants about sioux hockey but didn't quite understand it. It was great to see that the other night. It brings home our point of the power of collegiate hockey and the sioux name with it. It rocked!
  13. The betty was paid for not by the students but thru borrowed money tied up with the REA. Hence the name, BESC. So if tuition is going up it has little or nothing to do with athletics. And, I agree with several of the other posts, while it has some issues, it is much better than the Hyslop. I can remember the nights were they had to open the back doors on below zero nights to get it to cool off, but then the benches and players were freezing and the fans in the upper bowl were sweating. It lacked proper lighting, a video score board and had almost no ability to sell advertising. Not to mention the issues with practice since BB, VB, Men's & Womens Track, Baseball & SB were all practicing at the same time. Oh yeah, and the locker rooms were junk.
  14. I concure. This is a marriage for scheduling purposes only. Much as the Great West is. It gives them something to shoot for, but what is the real result of that. No bid to the Tourney, the source of revenue to the big money.
  15. Once again, it boils down to... why isn't he happy here. Is it the idea that he doesn't really have a say, neither does the AD? Read the release on his hiring and make your own judgement on who is running the athletic department...!
  16. QUOTE(sioux89 @ Jan 20 2006, 01:49 AM) The UND/NDSU option is appealing to about half of the big sky schools. The fear is that the league would split east/west which destroys the main rivalries (and revenue) for the schools out west. They need the Montana rivalry to fill the coffers. That is why the key to the 12 team 2 division Big Sky is to put Montana in the western division and Montana St in the eastern division. Then assign them as permanent rivals, so that they play every year, which is what the SEC does with Auburn and Georgia. That keeps Montana fans happy, keeps the western schools (by keeping Montana on the schedule). The eastern schools would still get Montana St. every year, and Montana every 2 or 3 years. Also, if the Big Sky ever decided to play a championship game, this would make it possible for Montana and Montana St. to meet in the title game. WEST DIVSION Montana Idaho St Eastern Washington Portland ST Sacramento St Northern Arizona EAST DIVISION Montana St Weber St Northern Colorado SDSU NDSU UND The only major issue with this proposal, which I must admit is good, is that Weber won't go for it. As I said earlier, legistlative league procedure make it ALMOST impossible. That being said, where is Southern Utah?
  17. This big sky issue has a small part with MSU, the key is Montana. The league is not just based on football. Montana brings the big fans for all the schools. Contrary to belief, some of the schools listed as against the league expansion are not excatly true. NAU & Sac are not against the move with the dakotas, others are, as I stated earlier. There are many aspects of the NCC that the BS likes but can't necessarily pass due to league legislative procedures. There is no doubt that the addition of NDSU and UND have much to offer in regards to national recognition and television time, which is the reality of bringing in revenue. That being said, the institutional votes are cast by the president or chancellors not the AD's. So, the whole process is bogged down at that point. And, once again, I will state clearly for the record that Philly has distrubted that opportunity more than you can imagine. Even NDSU would be better off without him at this point. If you don't believe it just ask. Finally, the Big Sky will not disolve because of FB. It is a feather in their hat, but at the DIAA level, basketball brings in the money with the revenue sharing and for that reason alone FB will not cause the league to break apart. Once again, just my thoughts....
  18. Well, I guess if they are having financial problems, a person with some business background wouldn't be a bad idea. Maybe Schepp could take that over. He is teaching a Finance 300/400 level course on sports finance. They could get someone else in there to do Championships. Particularly if they lost $23K on the home playoff football game under his guidance.
  19. A few items to refute or add on. UNO would likely join the MIAA if the NCC falls apart. At a little later date they perhaps (with the Board of Regents approval) look towards DivIAA football (and DI everything else). UNO has been courted several times by the MIAA. Auggie has flirted with the idea of going DIII if costs continue to escalate. Mankato is interested in DIAA, but the major indication would be if the NCC goes. The same is true for SCSU. UMD just got here, no clue on their Chancellors thoughts. Other than her trying to stay out of trouble with hockey behavior toward the visiting teams... USD stuggles financially as it is, however renewing a rivalry with SDSU would be a good thing for the pocketbook, so DIAA is an option. The UND/NDSU option is appealing to about half of the big sky schools. The fear is that the league would split east/west which destroys the main rivalries (and revenue) for the schools out west. They need the Montana rivalry to fill the coffers. Phil Harmeson talks a good game but in reality has made more enemies than friends in the Big Sky conference. His law degree, while impressive, doesn't compensate for his demeaner when dealing with others outside UND (and some within). Just my thoughts. Did I come close?
  20. I have no doubt of Rob's ability to raise money, particularly in the area of football. I just question the ability of leadership to recognize compentent people in responsible positions. Is it obvious to everyone that perhaps even the AD isn't calling the shots? When you read about an FAR more than the AD, that is the first sign of trouble. Philly is dictacting what occurs and when. Unfortuanately he doesn't seem to have a very good grasp of athletics, fan behavior and the mission of athletics role in perception of a university. If you read the release on Rob being appointed; the leadership is pretty clear. How can a newly appointed AD declare staff when they have only just met?
