  2. this article was already brought up in the former players thread but it does have a blurb about toews in here. sorry but the term "the next one" was 1st given to sidney crosby then for some reason floated around kessels name now its being used for toews?? give it up please....sid the kid is the closest to deserve the nickname "the next one" and thats still a stretch right now coparing anyone to gretzky...or am i missing something and does every top canadian prosepect get to share "the next one" for a little while ;)

And 6-foot-2, 185-pound, 17-year-old Jonathan Toews of the University of North Dakota was, not surprisingly, one of the most impressive players in camp. "The Next One," is the youngest player on the team and the only player still draft eligible.

The world juniors takes place Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Vancouver.

In my opinion there will never be another "ONE". The best thing about Gretzky's game was his vision of the ice. He could find an open man that you couldn't even see if you were in the broadcast booth. Crosby does have great vision too, but I think he greatly lacks the competitivness and the hate of losing that Gretzky had. Kessel deffinetly doesn't have that vision either.

  3. Just a few stats from Gillen's page that show just how dominating South has been...

    Shots

    FSH- 310 Opp.- 99

    Goals

    FSH- 52 Opp.- 4

    Assists

    FSH- 69 Opp.- 3

    Points

    FSH- 121 Opp.- 7

    GAA

    FSH- 0.6 Opp.- 8.17

Even the GF natives have to give credit to these guys.

  4. First off... Roper , try not to make it so obvious that you play for South. Second, I think Haas makes a good point about how other teams have two games to rack up points against wahp or shanley and South only plays each once. Another good point made by Puckhead about Wahpeton players doing nothing in the offseason to turn their program around and eliminate these embarassments. And third, I would expect North and South to have a rather intense rivalry. If these assumptions are correct, why would South pack it in after it was only 4-0. Can you imagine the Sioux being up 4-0 on the Gophers then letting up just because they have a reasonable lead, come on specifics.

  5. I'm not trying to start anything at all, certainly not a Gophers vs. Sioux discussion or Toews v. Kessel, but this line truly cracked me up. I mean, seriously, taking umbrage with Kessel's decision to "turn his back on his hometown" sets a dangerous precedent for those in Grand Forks, doesn't it? Don't most (ahem, nearly all) of your players come from out of state? How do you reconcile your giddy feelings about them? After all, they too "turned their backs" on their home towns. Oh, faulty logic!

Sad yes, but it is true. I'm sure that the Sioux are regretting not recruiting Potulny and Irmen right about now.

  6. The play on Swanson's goal (the game winner, if I remember) was offside. He came down on a 2-on-1, and the linesman missed the call. I was sitting directly in line with the blue line at the time. No question they were offside.

Also, I don't know if they could have "easily won the game by a couple more goals had they converted on the powerplay." Central didn't get a call all night, until the last couple minutes when it seemed redbeard and his lackey called some make-ups.

That being said, GFC didn't play that great, and WF played pretty good. They were able to wear down the Knights by rolling all four lines most of the game, and by never having kill off any penalties.

Please don't try and make excuses for why Central lost. They are an average team at best and West Fargo proved they were a better team by outplaying Central all night.

  7. We'll finally find out who is the best team in the state. I am expecting South to come out on top if they can be much more disciplined than they were against North. They will not be able to afford putting Grafton on the power play. I believe Grafton has very skilled forwards who can put the puck in the net but i have serious doubts about the abilities of there defensemen. If their D can't break the puck out of the zone, their forwards won't be able to do what they do best. The depth of South could be the deciding factor in this game, along with the play of both teams' tenders.

  8. I was just wondering why you thought Shanley would be 5th when they beat Central who you have ranked ahead of them. Shanley puts a good squad on the ice, really transition well. I think they'll stack up well with the rest of the east this year. Another thing I noticed was North and Minot behind West Fargo, that just seems odd to me. ;)

Shanley may stack up well with the mid to bottom of the pack teams but they'll never come close to the trio at the top.

    1. South/Grafton

    3. Red River

    4. West Fargo

    5. North

    6. Minot

    7. Central

    8. Williston

Top seed can't be decided till they play their make up game. That should be an amazing high school hockey game and i think it will come down to who takes more penalties because both teams should have deadly powerplays with all the firepower they have.
