  1. if powers plays on a line with mcdougall and doeden i am sure they will do just fine and put up some pretty good numbers. if they are split up to even out the top two lines he probably wont score as many points as last year. but he probably will be on the power play which he wasnt last year which will help

Doeden and mcdougall both see the ice very well and can finish with the best of em so i dont really expect powers numbers to change too much.

  2. However, the other defense include players having played varsity in the past. Anderson, Metz, and maybe one more have recieved significant playing time and proven themselves able to play. What I would be worried about with be their backchecking forwads playing strong D, not so much the defense themselves. I agree with your other points about a lack of depth for Grafton and Red River, any idea who is playing goalie for each team?

I agree that the defensive play of Souths forwards will be a huge determining factor in how successful they are this year. As for metz i am 90% sure he'll be playing for South this year, after only playing a few games of varsity during his sophomore year and then playin midget minor in omaha it will be interesting to see how he adapts to the high school game. Anderson did play varsity for Shanley and West Fargo as a freshman and sophomore but saw very limited varsity ice time for South and when he did play he made too many costly turnovers. As for Red River i would expect Pat Arnaeson to start in the net. I've seen him play a few times on select teams and looked solid. I dont see Meland putting up the same sorts of numbers he did last year to due to lack of support. Red River will need some forwards to step up if they expect to compete with the offensive depth of Grafton and South.

  3. looking at gillands website fargo south has 5 players back that scored at least 20 points not including the transfer from hazen, so they should have pretty good firepower along with the returning goaltender

I'd expect South to have the best first and second lines in the state this year. The Power Mcdougal Doeden line could put up some serious numbers this year but will have to work on their defensive play. Anderson Hills and Miller should also put up pretty good numbers for grafton. I expect the weaknesses for South and Grafton to be their defensemen. While South only returns one defensemen with significant varsity playing time, Grafton returns four who haven't had a whole lot of success at the varsity level. As for red river after Meland Ladeuceur and Galbreath there is a severe dropoff in talent and i dont seem them having very much depth.

  4. What you say is pretty accurate. Minot does well in the West and then goes to state and gets beat, after leading the games, two years in a row by Central. From what I know, Minot out-talented Central but they could not beat them. Minot's State problems have to have something to do with history. I think if Devil's Lake had been at the top of the West this past year they would have beat Central. They don't have the same history of failure (at State) that Minot has and their team was very young.

Just curious here. What are the rivalries like out East? I know that the Bismarck-Minot rivalery is pretty good. Plus, Minot has been beating them. I was in Bismarck for the rabbit fiasco and it was quite fun. The Bismarck rink is nicer than Minot's though because it is smaller and thus you can pack the house. Minot's rink is just too big. I would think that South and Red River are getting to be pretty good rivals. Thanks for any replies.

If you're going by competitiveness then the best rivalry would have to be Red River and South over the past couple of years. But the only rivalry that draws standing room only crowds is the South v. Moorhead games.

  5. I certainly agree that great players come from both ends of the state but, the East is a stronger conference than the West. Just look at how many championships the West has won... Andy Dittus is a very, very good foward. He definitly deserved that award. He absolutly undressed UND recruit Derek LaPointe in the teams first of two meetings.

Specifics, how did you do in the showcase?

  6. If you are going to go off of assists then panzer got the shaft. Assists are what they are. Putting the puck in the net is what the next level looks at.

I disagree, although scoring is a major asset, i think vision and having the ability to see the ice and see plays before they occur are what will get you to the next level.

  7. Okay, here is my prediction for next year's state tourney. It will be different. For this year's NCAA hockey final.....it will be different, for NCAA basketball...it will be different, anyone know a good phone number for Vegas? Between Michelson and myself, we will make a boatload of money with our Nostradamus like prediction skills.

As far as concrete predictions, 2007 State high school finals = Red River 2 South 1.

    South 4 GPR 2

  8. I have heard from a very reliable source that it was a grade 2 separation. Should be healed up in about two weeks. That's good news considering what it could have been.

Tough break for Forney and TRF. If Forney doesn't get hurt, TRF wins. Simple as that...
