  1. For those of you hockey fans, players, fathers, and people that should find sometihng better to do. Yes South has been one of the better teams for years and years.they have the numbers to construct a good team. Wilson has had so much to work with with the Hunters, Askew, Hansen days, the mid 90s with Tupa and many others including the Felmans and many other player. In more recent years with the 2004 hockey team with Galt, Weisgarber, Brehmer, McLean, Kankelfritz, Campbell, Mauch and the rest yet still short of a state title and yes I know that other teams have had amazing players as well. My point is that the last three years South has had three great teams. A great facility to practice and workout in/on, and excellent area programs and training equipment. Yet they come short when it count. The coaching is where it needs to be. I tihnk it comes down to what the players really want. four players wanting a state title will not win it. It is easy to say they are goign to do it or want it a lot. It is another for a team to win it.

Wow you sound like someone that actually played the game of hockey and also know the rules of the game. What will get bad again is when players start writing on here complaining of certain officials this season. This is a prime example of bad parenting when parents over the past few years have been the blunt of problems that officials have to deal with. When a player argues with a professional that knows more about the game than they do, makes for an interesting conversation, but i suppose that's what sells.

Hey guys, looks like we have someone with two Alias's.

  2. I've said it once and I'll say it again. The referees don't decide the outcome of the game. I don't specifically remember the last 3 minutes, but was Central on the power play in the last 3 minutes? Even if they were, South had successfully killed off the Central power plays previous to the last 3 minutes. Did the refs let in 2 weak goals in 47 seconds? People use referees as excuses for teams choking in big games. That's all there is to it.

  3. Regardless of the game, it is ludacris to say that one official can change the direction of the game. Sure they can call penalties, but officials can't score goals. Oh, and in that North game, Red River had 2 penalties called in the first 7 minutes of the 3rd period, so the refereeing obviously biased as some people think.

If you happen to have a copy of the 2004 ND state hockey finals, between GFC and South. Watch the last 3 minutes of that film. A well fought game by both teams, then the officials got alittle chesty and took it out of the kids hands.

  4. Your right I don't have a clue what I am talking about....lol but at least one person new what game I was talking about. So I had the wrong team but I doesn't matter what team it was because it was so freaken obvious a half blind man not knowing anything about hockey could have seen it. Talk to someone once that heard right out of well known refee's mouth.

I understand that officals can't score goals but when you go from calling a descent game to calling anyting and everything that would usually be let go in a game like that until the team catch's up. You give enough powerplay's and you are going to eventually score goals. I seen it with my own eyes. Those two penalties were just a cover up to make it look like they were calling a descent game. I believe North was totally out playing them up until Leducer's whistle started working for RR.

I don't have a problem with a little poor grammer, but guys come on. I can hardly tell what you guys are saying. Also, I hope your kidding when you said referres can't help determine the outcome of a game

You are right, I do love Red River and the blonde hair. They are state champs how can you not love em'. Well actually they arent the real state champs because LaDoucer won the game for them. If im not mistaken they were screwed out of a big call last year by the Red Beard but a good team plays through that and wins games. And by the way you must really know what your talking about because Red River was never losing to West Fargo you dumb @$$.

Aren't you alittle young to be on the computer?

  5. The best team in the state for that season is NOT always the team that wins the championship. The team that plays best that night wins the championship. Here's a little something for you, in 1980 the US mens olympic team beat Russia for the first time in twenty years. Now, are you going to sit there and tell me the Russia was not in fact the better of the two teams? It wouldnt have been a big deal if USA was the best team in the world that year... But they were not the best team in the world, the were the best team in the world that night. There is a huge difference. If given the chance to ask a member of the 1980 team who was the best team in 1980, I'd be willing to bet they would tell you Russia aswell.

Fargo South was 12-1-1 in conference play last season. They defeated Grand Forks Red River by a combined score of 5-2. They also beat Grand Forks Central by a combined score of 9-4. Both of those are fairly significant margins in the game of hockey. Add both of those together and they beat the Grand Forks school 14-6. 14 to 6. That is a very significant margin wouldnt you agree? After going undefeated against both these teams how can you say that throughout the entire season, that one of them was in fact the best team in the state? You can't and they weren't. They were however the best team that night.

Those are big margins considering that one line did all the scoring!

  6. South may not have won state but they clearly did have the best team in the state. Red River may have beaten them when it counted most but South did beat them three times prior to the state tournament.

Tough to be considered the best team in the state when you only have one line that can score.

  7. Maybe a more realistic EDC ranking would be...

    1. Fargo South

    2. Grafton

    3. Grand Forks Red River

    4. Fargo North

    5. Grand Forks Central

    6. Jamestown

    7. West Fargo

    8. Shanley

    9. Whapeton

In my opinion it's very difficult to assume who will fill the 3rd through 6th spot in the EDC rankings.  After South and Grafton their are no real standout teams so I think you have to put the teams in order of certain individuals that these teams have that may make a difference.  I'm not saying because of one or two players these teams will succeed but, because we have so little information thats how I decided to fill the final spots.  The top players for each teams in my opinion are...

Fargo South- Paul Weisgarber, Erick Galt, Grant Larson, Adam Campell, Sean Diechert (G)

Grafton- Paul and Tom Campell, Zach Miller, Andy Peterson

Grand Forks Red River- Marc Mihulka and Jarrett Galbreath

Fargo North- Tyler Klein and Nick Klenow

    Grand Forks Central- Jon Greicar

    Jamestown- Zach Welding

    West Fargo- Darek Knaus

    Shanley- Marc Harrie

    Whapeton- ....sorry...

Obviously the teams with more players listed are more talented and thats why they are at the top of list at this point in time.  I guess we'll see how accurate they really are in about 3 weeks?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I'd have to agree except, West fargo and Shanley. Both teams are Very, Very weak. Neither has a respectable goaltender. Both have weak defensemen. Both have poor depth at forward. The reason shanley will probably win is because of coaching, year in and year out they the strongest coaching staff in the state. Should be the same story with Pivetz in his 2nd year.

  8. First of all, im not ur buddy if u think those ludacris rankings are legit. Secondly there is no doubt in my mind RR will be in close competition with FSH for the best record in the EDC. If my memory serves me correctly, which i think that it does, GF teams for the 87,88, and 89 age groups have won, or at least participated in the state championship game pert near every year since peewees. This leads me to believe that once again the best of the two Grand Forks team will win the state championship.(just a thought) And Jamestown #4, psssshhhh, i dont recall the last time Jamestown placed in the top 5 from the EDC.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

The rankings are alittle weak, but not as weak as your last comment. First of all comparing peewee's to high school is a joke. I also believe a certian mario lamaroux carried those teams anyway.

  9. from previous post:

Red River is right where they belong? Behind Jamestown? Are you kidding me? Jamestown? And Central should be much lower as well. They lost their entire team from last year (And for those who do not believe that Marto wasn't their entrie team, they might not have made it to state last year, let alone reach the championship game without him). Red River, on the other hand, returns their leading scorer, Marc "10-Bears" Mihulka, who I have heard as been tearing up the Elite league this fall and should be a sleeper pick for Mr. Hockey. However, preseason rankings do not matter, but when the boys from the south side of GF see this poll this will get them even more fired up to defend their 2004-2005 State Championship.

  10. Thanks for clarifying the situation with that lesson in history. Siouxfan3 must be carrying a chip for a long time because the last time a Grand Forks Bantam team went to Tier II Nationals was in 2002 - long time to hold a grudge and ignore current activities by the selects. Like I said there are a number of Williston kids on the 92, 91 etc district select teams. It was also a cheap shot for him to specifically name and criticize two current select team members. Easy to hide behind a screen name and run down other people.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

  11. No, the selects is a big joke to, one year a kid from williston tried out and they told him that he would be on the team but he had to travel down to grand forks the next weekend to try out against some grand forks kids who werent able to make the try outs. whats with that? if the kids cant make the set try outs they shouldnt be on the team there shouldnt be seperate tryouts for the kids who couldnt make itor spots reserved for them. thats why these kids arent trying out for the teams, cuase its a waste of money to go down to the try outs and get screwed like that.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I think what your refering to is when one of the grandforks bantam A teams made the national tournement they had to miss select tryouts to attend the tournament. The people on the north dakota amatuer hockey board decided it would be fair to allow them to tryout. They would pick the top ten players and they would make the team flat out. The next number of bubble players, how ever many they felt were worthy, would then have to tryout with the players that were unable to attend the tryouts due to earning a spot at the U14 National tournament. I think now that siouxfan3 knows this we won't have to worry about him/her rant and rave over how unfair selects is. On the other hand since he/she probably was cut, do to lack of ability he will continue to blame others for his misfortunes.

  12. You make some good points XtotheZ.  North would most definitly struggle trying to roll two lines.  The only way I could see that working is with a very intense workout program to prepare their top players for this kind of use.  On the other hand, how long does it take an elite player to recover from a shift?  Thats tough to calculate being that practically all atheletes have different levels of endurance and so forth. However, last season believe Nick Klenow played 6 straight minutes against Red River on consecutive penalty kills and North successfully killed the power play.  I believe they played with one forward on D for this time because they had so many D in the box.  So if endurance throughout the game is the issue I don't think it will play a major factor in most games.  I also believe it would be reasonable to believe that Klein may play defense on the power play or penalty kill.  I remember seeing forward Chris Cusey out on D for Norths top power play but that might change with the coaching change.

My point- It will be very difficult for a team to score more than one goal on Elliot Okland.  In 2001 a goalie named Aaron Walski set a record against Grand Forks Red River roughriders in the state title game for saves and pushed the game into 5 overtimes.  Who was taking all these shots anyway?  Future Minnesota Gophers Danny Irmen and Ryan Potunly thats who.  If Aaron Walski, a goalie not even on the same level as Mr. Okland was able to stop two of the WCHA's best in their high school days, with those facts how will Okland perform against players that are far worse than Irmen and Potunly were in high school? You tell me...

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    Grievences

    1. no one can be fresh for six minutes

    2. North was weak last year, even by thier standards.

    3. irmen and potunly were sophmores (very very good sophmores but still sophmores.)

    4. Walski was hot, he played out of his mind. ( okland could do the same but thats asking alot.)

    5. please give me a reason on why one of norths top two forwards would play defence on the penalty kill? is that or isn't one of the most ridiculous ideas you've ever heard.

    6. okland won't being playing for north anyway, so we can probably stop talking about him as a member of that team.

    7. rolling two lines is a poor idea, but yes they do need a workout program.

  13. My mistake.  I should have emphasized "players" when I said North will have four players that would kill Souths top power play.  To play the penalty kill you don't have to be super skilled, or even very good for that matter... At least in ND highschool hockey.  If you a a great skater you can shut down a very good powerplay by pressuring the puck with good speed and and recovering quickly.  Word is Nate Mickelberg is back at North and I dont think anyone will disagree that he is a fantastic skater.  A fantastic skater would be able to do these things such as recovering quickly and pressuring the puck correct?  I don't think playing one forward at defense on the penalty kill would pose much of problem either...  Refering back to my previous post, I don't think a player such as Tyler Klein would have any trouble playing defense on the penatly kill.

When saying it would take 30-40 breakaways to score on Elliot Okland, it was an exaggeration and I should have made that clear.  It was simply a mathematical function to the fact that he stopped 9-10 breakaways at a NAHL practice last season.  On the other hand I would not doubt that it would take twenty breakaways for Souths top scorer to score three goals on Okland.  Saying North will be facing 40-50 shots a game against the top teams in the East is outrageous.  Wahpeton faced an average of 37 shots on net last year and I would assume North will be better than Wahpeton correct?  Also, North's defense may however be weak, but are they the only players on the ice stopping an oncoming rush?  Many teams will have a difficult time getting the puck past their own blueline when Norths top line is on the ice so in that regard I don't think their D will pose too much of a threat for that instance.  Just my opinion...

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

On the other side to that, I think north goes from outhouse to penthouse if okland plays. They go from vying for that 4th spot to having an decent chance at getting to the EDC championchip, Hes proven before that he can take games out of the kids hands. He was the top rated goaltender at the select 17 festival, in closing it all rests on his shoulders norths fate is in his hands.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Well said, i like what your saying for the most part. Okland is a great goaltender. Also i'm not trying to imply that north is any where near wahpeton, but when you said they averaged 37 shots agianst you have to take in to consideration there very weak non confrence competition an interesting statistic would be the average shots agiast put on by the four east teams that made it to state. After all that i'm saying that it wouldn't be unfathenable for a team like south or gpr to put up 40 shots. 50 shots is a stretch even with norths depth. I could see 35-40 with a majority of those coming when norths top line isn't on the ice. please don't come back with well north will roll two lines, because that would only make things worse for the spartens of north. Thier first line wouldn't be nearly as productive (17 min periods). No D is a very big problem, look for it late in the game when the first unit isn't out there and norths behind. Also Nate Mikelberg maybe alittle rusty as he saw little to no action with his team last year. In closing, im sure klien could play d on the powerplay but let's be honest, he won't.
