  1. Bottom line is that we need to upgrade our talent.  Goalie, defense, passing, 5 on 5 scoring are all sub-par.  We need to become a place again where top talent wants to come to hone their skills into NHL ready players.  We seem to have lost that.  We seem to fall down on the development part - have you ever seen a team regress so far as this one?  Coaches need to do a serious post-mortem on this season.

    It's a good showcase. It's a smart showcase.

Between this and a camp UND has put on in the spring It's brought a lot of very high end potential recruits into the building that maybe don't usually get the chance.

It's something the coaches haven't got a lot of credit for implementing, but it's a good thing g for the program.

Agreed - now step two is landing some of those high-enders.

Ditto. I fear a bunch of young kids in the D-Corps, but hopefully we'll score enough to make up the difference. Need an immediate bump from a portal goalie and I really hope it's Persson.

Agree with your assessment - however, taking a step back to look at our program, what does it say for our recruiting when for the third year in a row we will be depending on a portal goalie?  To me this is just a stunning turn of events - Third year in a row which doesn't make this a one time problem but a long term problem.  I don't know what's going on with recruiting but this should have been addressed long ago.  Staff needs to get it together.

THIS is my point. There's NO CHANCE we have a reasonable enough group of fans that could take a significant lull. Until we have a real understanding (when I say real, I mean people realizing that winning a national championship every year is just dumb and the competitive landscape has absolutely changed since the 90s and 2000s) of what SHOULD BE our expectations every year, this nonsense argument of wanting to get rid of a coach every season will just never stop.

I don't find the expectation that we should be in the NCAA Tournament every year unreasonable at all.  And the landscape is changing but we are not keeping up in recruiting or playing style.  This has been the most frustrating year in a long time.  And there is absolutely zero reason why we should be in the goalie situation we are in now - and we have to rely on the portal again for next year.  We should demand better.

Oh, here we go…I suppose I should just b*tch about the officials like everyone else instead, right?  Berry won a title in 2016 so lock him up for another decade.  You’re right, North Dakota athletics is in a state of awesomeness across the board this season, we should all be thrilled.

Exactly this - no one is held to any standards anymore - I've been a fan since the early70's and have never seen a team regress like this one.

I'm so happy Berry recruits culture guys.  Who needs blue chippers when you can watch this?

Don't you just love where our program is now?  The question now is how long is this going to go on before changes are made - my over/under is 5 more years. Someone somewhere needs to get a clue.

Says who? I'm not saying I know the reason some aren't coming here, but who's saying this is the reason?

I'm sure there are many factors but this has been discussed on this site - that other teams like Denver play fast and we don't and this appeals to high end talent.  To put it another way - I don't think our recruiting problems are due to "the weather".

nut problem is we aren’t getting the blue chippaz like we used to

Remember when high end talent came here because we developed them into NHL ready players (Parise was advised to come here instead of Minny for that very reason).  Now we are losing talent because of our system and development.  The light needs to go on in someone's head or we need to strap in for a bumpy ride.

UND hockey has had 1 losing season since the 93-94 season. (2001-2002).  They are getting dangerously close to doing that again.   If this team doesn't get 7 more wins, it will be the 4th time in that same timespan that the team doesn't get to 20 wins on the season.  3 of those times will be under Berry in the past 6 seasons.  Sure he won a ?NAtty and 3 Penrose Cups, but the problem is the inconsistency.  And that is a problem.  And it needs to be addressed.

It certainly does need to be addressed - problem is do you see anyone in the coaching staff with the willingness and awareness to address this - we aren't privy to the coaching discussions but certainly not much has changed this season.  And hoping the AD's office will address anything is futile.  They think a 5-6 Bubba did such a good job they extended him before his contract is up.  AJS points out the problem very well.

I’m hoping Berry can learn from this season , but his history he runs status quo so he probably figures it’s not broken why fix.

It's the rare coach who can self reflect and make changes.  They are blind to their own weaknesses and in love with their "system".  Strange behavior among very knowledgeable people.

2 more times last night that UND gave up a goal in the first or last 2 minutes of a period. This isn’t even a trend anymore. Unfortunately it is the same general cast of characters to start and end periods. @MafiaMan is pulling out his hair right now.

......oh wait he doesn't have any.

The fact that this is still going on at this time of the season indicates that this is now part of our "culture".  The cause of this is mental not physical - lack of ability to bear down when needed.

I'm not a knee jerk type of guy.  I'm not foolish enough to think this program is so much better than other programs.  Those days are over.  If your expecting a title every other year you'll be disappointed.

During the Hakstol Era the team was in the frozen four almost every year.  That wasn't good enough either.  Nothing will satisfy many people on this site except a title every year.  That's not gonna happen anywhere.

I recall complaints about not winning the big game during the Hakstol Era.  Brad Berry comes in and wins and is a hero now people turn on him and say he won with Hakstols recruits.  Gimme a break!

I see plenty of complaining here but no answers of how or what to fix.  That doesn't surprise me because I doubt anybody here would have any valid solutions to the perceived problem or problems.

Some of what to fix is behind the scenes and can only be identified by us by what we can see (culture).  What we can see is a lack of mental toughness - horrible lack of discipline for inopportune penalties, defense repeatedly out of place even this late in the season, lackadaisical passes,  giving up leads and failure to concentrate during the first and last two minutes of periods.  Other concerns are that we can see are lack of development among returners, getting beat to many blue chippers, total lack of goalie recruitment, and our outdated style of play.  It worries me that we are losing high end talent because of our outdated philosophy.  How to fix it is harder but we have an experienced coaching staff who need to figure it our and right soon.  I hope our coaches aren't so rigid that they cant make changes.  No way we shouldn't be able to sell our program to high end prospects.

I would argue that the reason we aren't successful is because we seem to be a little softer than we used to be.  When we keep talking "no swagger" on the years we are down, there is a problem in the guys we are recruiting.  We would always have some skill guys and a complement of players that just had an edge and would go through a brick wall for the team.  Everyone would always say that we would be the hardest working team and were just plain hard to play against.  When I look at our roster, there aren't that many players I look at and think their distinguishing characteristic is being tough to play against.   Some of the defensive lapses are due to being mentally lazy, and some from being physically lazy, and those aren't thing usually associated with UND hockey.  Need to find a way to right the ship and truly be a team of "culture"!

Nailed it - And the lapses on defense have not gotten better during the season which frustrates me to no end.  Add in total lack of discipline for stupid penalties and you have this season in a nutshell.  The question is will Berry have enough insight and flexibility to look at what is happening and make changes or will we just more of the same?

  14. Here's the million dollar question - Does hockey Bubba have the introspection to question why we are losing Blue Chippers who want to play under a better system, why we have the worst goaltending in the country, why many players have regressed during the offseason, why we seem to rely on the portal instead of getting top recruits, why we play with absolutely no discipline - from lack of defensive positioning to lazy passes to giving up leads to our studs taking horrible 5 penalties without regard to the team?  Can he look at himself and staff and make changes?  Or is he more like Football Bubba who doubles down for more of the same.  I hope he can take a hard look at things or we need to strap in for a bumpy ride.  And expect no help from our absent AD.  There is absolutely no reason we should miss the playoffs or expect St. Clown to come in and kick our A**.  Time to get it done or move on.
