  1. I've spent the last 20 years as an avid Anti-Michigan fan due to my Buckeye football affiliation. The best anti-Wolverine song of all time is "We Don't Give A Damn For The Whole State Of Michigan". If the UM fans and players heard a western version they'd crap themselves. It would be so unexpected they'd drop their jaws. To do it right you'd need the band's cooperation. It's the song the Ohio State Marching Band plays and sings EVERYTIME they enter a stadium, no matter who they are playing, it's hilarious. UM fans hear it all the time (and hate it) but not out west where they think nobody knows it. It would be a great victory song in place "Na na na". Here's a link to the song as played by the OSU band. I'd change the "We're from Ohio" part to "We're the Fighting Sioux!" and on each "O-H!" and "I-O!" yell I'd put in the words "Fighting Sioux!"...an extra syllable but it can be done and sound good. Any band members on this board? http://www.xanga.com/the_wolverine
  2. Besides that, the new Red Baron Freschetta style pizza is pretty good.
  3. I think it's kind of funny and I don't think it's worth getting bent out of shape over. OTOH it's not a "mistake". It is definitely someone's idea of a joke, someone who is a fan of another school slipped it in, laughed their a$$ off when it got through the screening process and are still getting a big chuckle over it. Maybe it can be the start of a WCHA misprint tradition. Rather than get upset I say get a sense of humor and get them back, I'm sure many deniable opportunities will present themselves. Simply slipping in an extra "o" here and there would be a start.
  4. Yep, great bracket, the NCAA's attempt to keep the WCHA from dominating the Frozen Four is the fan's gain in Grand Forks. REA definitely gets the best show. If I can get out of here on time I'm grabbing a Cheap Ticket and heading west to finally see The Ralph
  5. Good post. Sioux fans have something special with the greatest college program of all time in their own backyard. The fans are key, you can't have a great program without them. The players have several paths to the NHL but they play here because of the support, tradition, pride, coaching and facilities. Probably in that order.
  6. However they do it I think their focus will be on reducing the # of WCHA team in the Frozen 4.
  7. Hak will probably be careful with Stafford. If he's not ready then playing him will do both Drew and the team more harm than good. Even though him being out has been a positive for team development we'd be even better now with him back at full speed. You think he partially tore a ligament? Reading between the lines I think that's what may have happened, a nick that required no repair and to wait and see how it responds. Sometimes they are fine with no lasting effects within a few weeks. Sometimes longer though. Another common impact knee injury is a little bone chip at the ligament attachment that also needs no repair but can take longer to heal. Best case would be a deep bruise with no ligament involvement, but those can hurt like hell for months and keep you out longer. Bottom line I wouldn't hold my breath expecting him to return and be productive this quick. I'm glad Smaby didn't damage his neck when he hit the boards tonight. He came back from that and really played hard and planted someone in the 3rd period. He had a good game tonight except for maybe once again getting an unneccesary penalty but I can't really recall the circumstances without rewatching the game. Get some rest boys, hug your gals and don't drink too much. It's showtime.
  8. Espn college hockey commentator "Bob", I didn't catch his last name while listening to XM, just picked THE FIGHTING SIOUX to win the National Chamionship. "Too much talent, great goaltending." I told you guys, UND is THE hockey program everyone wishes they had. Drop the puck!
  9. Mad props to SCSU for playing an incredible amount of hockey in the past 9-10 days and still finding the heart to keep the legs going. This team is physically and mentally tough. Lets turn up the tempo tonight to "full" and take advantage and finish them off. You gotta love this Sioux team. Two weeks ago posters were saying "let's face it, this team is going nowhere"...now we are seeing rookie talent, upper classman leadership, and team chemistry that doesn't come around very often. Without a doubt the Sioux are the most exciting D1 team to watch right now. When someone goes down someone else steps up. The upper classmen are unselfish and leaders. Marvin put in a nice game, Prpich's post game comments on Kaip were excellent. Oshie is and amazing player. He's fun to watch in a way the Hrkus Circus was, he just makes you say "hmm". Duncan and Kaip showed us some great offensive talent yesterday. This team acts like you'd expect a Sioux to team to act. Confidence, pride, no back-down, speed, talent, toughness, smarts. Only only one stupid penalty last night (dissapointing it came from a Jr, it almost cost us the game). They are a force to be reckoned with. I live out east and believe me, the Fighting Sioux program gets a lot of respect out here in CCHA country, they are considered the Gold Standard (and I mean "Gold" in a good way) and I'm proud to see this team living up to those expectations.
  10. Drop the puck! Pregame interview: "So you're in the lineup tonight for your offensive prowess"....Marvin: laugh, 'yeah right'
  11. Just thought we should get that straight since we're going to be hearing the name a lot : )
  12. I'm highly impressed with his post game interview. It was all about the team and he seems to be taking the injury with a level of maturity you wouldn't expect from someone so young. A very impressive young man who I think will provide leadership the rest of the way. You can't help but wish him the best.
  13. What a class act. Post game interview: 'that's what happens when you play sports, I don't hold a grudge against the guy who hit me, and I give credit to the guys who stepped up tonight, we have home ice and that's a good thing'. That's leadership.
  14. I'm listening to the webcast, did he skate off or was he helped off?....another freshman goal.
  15. Is that 3 goals and at least one assist so far tonight for the young guns? This team is coming together. I think we can play with anyone right now. I hope Fabian is OK.
  16. Ahhh! Go Sioux!...sorry, just had to get that out of my system before work. GO FIGHTING SIOUX!!! IT'S SWEEP TIME BABY!!!!!
  17. LET'S GO SIOUX! Pour it on.
  18. These announcers on the net feed are hating on Prpich
  19. Red Pepper at 1:00 am: Grinder w extra meat sauce, good Lord. Do they still have those red naugahide booths? Shangrila intruduced me to lemon chicken, they had an Asian guy working there then, he was a concert violinist and party animal. Mexican Village: I discovered fried ice cream Mikes Pizza: East Side right? Next to Whitey's? Great friggin' ribs and they delivered.
  20. Wow, did you know Seamus was the captain of the UND Rugby team for years? He was a legend, chain smoked, drank, kicked ass on the pitch and got straight A's all while throwing a non-stop 4 year party at his house and was the toughest SOB I ever knew. He fell out of a pickup truck at University and Washington after a game with a beer in his hand and landed on his head. He didn't bat an eyelash, just got up and chased after the truck and jumped back in. Yeah, you didn't want to piss him off. We played UM in Rugby in a game in Minny and that night while our team was at a kegger at a frat party a bunch of Minny frat guys decided to kick my butt because I was wearing my jersey and talking to one of their girls and Seamus walked into the fray and head butted the leader and knocked him out cold. Seamus looked around and asked "Who's next"...they said it was all cool, welcome to the party. Another time our team broke down in St Agath, Manitoba and Seamus opened everyones Labatts with his teeth and so impressed the locals that a bunch of Frenchy's drove us all the way to Winnepeg that night. I heard he died unexpectedly in St Paul a few years ago and left a wife and 2 kids. I was a Jr at Red River when RR and Central played in the state championship hockey game and it went into something like 7 OT's and set some kind of record as the longest game on record. I remember walking in terrible storms over to the arena to watch the Sioux. It didn't matter how bad it was you still went. We all had those big white inflatible Air Force boots we'd buy off of dirt poor fly boys so we could handle the cold. The place was sold out in the worst of weather. It just felt right inside the place with that nasty weather outside. We'd eat up the eastern teams like Harvard, they were so outclassed they wouldn't know what hit them and they'd never seen fans like we had. Thanks for the memories. I listening to the Denver game now on the net.
  21. It's been a long time since I graduated in 1982. I've seen the Sioux and Tony Hrkac win it all at Joe Louis vs Mich St and I went to the Frozen 4 in Columbus last year. But I haven't visited GF in 7 years and only a few times before that since 82'. The things I miss the most are Sioux Hockey, the UND Rugby Club, Whiteys and their great waitresses Andrea and co, and the world's best hangover food slung together by the Kuklok family at the Tomahawk Cafe at the truck stop, that place is surely gone by now. I was living in GF when Davey Christian won gold in 80' and I think you could hear the whole town whoop when it was final. Doug Smail's girlfriend (maybe his wife now) lived above me near the Red Pepper (more drinking food) and I remember Smail setting a record in maybe 81' by scoring the quickest goal in NHL history with the Jets...I think it was 5 seconds into the game. I remember drinking gallons of beer with a goalie named Stankoven at the DU house in 77' or maybe 78', that guy was funny as hell but just OK as a goalie. Hockey was the glue that binded the town and college together and I imagine it still is. I remember living on 20th st or ave near a Piggly Wiggly across from an ice cream place and often sitting with Fido Purpur and listening to his stories. He was quite a guy and I guess he died a few years ago. Gino Gasparini was the coach and his wife was my HS phys ed teacher at R River, the big mall wasn't built yet. I remember Mark Taylor and Phil Sykes always saving the day with late goals. The Sioux won it all in 80' and 82' with Taylor, Sykes, Eades, Patrick and Murray having big years, Chorney too. That arena was fun, the fans were often idiots but we didn't know any better. When I moved east I'd often drive to Pittsburgh to see Taylor play. Troy Murray was a real star, one of the best college players I've seen along with James Patrick. Good times, I really enjoyed that town. Go Sioux.
  22. How's this...We're playing 9 frosh who are better than other team's frosh. They now have a season under their belts and are coming together. This is the North Dakota Fighting Sioux and they WILL do much damage in the playoffs. Don't count them out to make a strong run, in fact, expect it.
  23. All I know is that a lively crowd and student section is a BIG part of the UND game experience. I'm an old fart and I'm perfectly willing to stand for much of the game but I know others aren't so put the students at the end and form a fan shape with their seats to the top of the arena so no one is blocked if they have to, or do it on the sides if the big contributors aren't willing to budge. Do something! It can't be rocket science to make things happen. I love the intelligent organized cheers and the music. And I like having the students close to the action. Many around the country think of UND as the "DUKE" of college hockey and I'd like the administration do as much as possible to make the REA the most difficult road game in the country. I live out east and believe me that the perception here is that North Dakota is the toughest place to play period. The Fighting Sioux are are spoken of with the greatest respect and have an awe and mystique about them that can't be bought. The sports fans at Ohio State would love to have the Sioux program and reputation. My concern is that with the new arena that the place has become 'soft' because the school hasn't figured out yet how to use it to it's best advantage. Changes and compromise must be made for the sake of the program. $$ is critical to winning, no doubt, but so is a great atmosphere.
  24. Move students behind opposing net, increase student tickets to 9% of total to match student $$, REA staff do their part to help atmosphere (ideas inside article), sell student tickets Monday at noon...first come first serve. All great ideas that I hope are considered seriously. http://www.thedakotastudent.com/vnews/disp...3/43d576530e4d7 by Dane Dekrey January 23, 2006 Now that students are aware of the so-called "flat-ass rules" that will be enforced at the Ralph Engelstad Arena (REA), and now that students are familiar with the dictatorial style of diplomacy implemented by the Athletic Department, it is right time for a response. After all, in this whole shuffle, I think some may have forgotten that the topic of dispute is, in fact, the student section. Thus, in the same "don't ask, just follow" mentality of Mr. Buning, I give you the list of grievances that, if not addressed and remedied, will be detrimental to the entire college hockey experience at the REA. My list is as follows: 1. Relocation: To combat the first of Buning's "flat-ass rules" - which is there shall be no standing while the puck is in play - it is time for the relocation of the student section. My recommendation is that we move behind the opposing team's goal. This way, students can stand and cheer without interruption, the entire ice can be seen by all students and such a location has the potential to create hell for opposing goalies. If it comes down to a choice between penalty box heckling or full-game standing, the choice is obvious - standing. 2. Proportionality: With a new seating location comes the need for a more proportional seating arrangement at the REA than the 545 lower bowl seats students currently have. Student fees allot $900,000 to the Athletic Department every year, or 9 percent of its total budget. So if the REA wishes for students to pay full price for a season ticket that's fine, but then it is only fair for the Athletic Department to no longer receive their cushy student fee. And if such a fee is 9 percent of the total budget, then 9 percent of students should have the opportunity to sit in the lower bowl at the REA. Right now, we are hovering around 5 percent. Nine percent is 965 students, or 420 more seats than currently available. 3. Distribution: It seems every year the proverbial thorn in the side of student government has been devising a fair, rational process of ticket distribution. Preliminary student government talks include the creation of a new online system where, from my understanding, students log on each week and attempt to purchase tickets. Stupid. That not only negates the idea of fan loyalty, but it also puts precious lower bowl tickets in the hands of technology. My recommendation: Sell student tickets the first day of class at 12 p.m. This satisfies all parties involved. Students wanting tickets must come the week before classes start to stand in line, thus appeasing the complaint that the old distribution process of standing in line reduced class attendance. Students are happy because then true fans get lower bowl tickets and also because then students must only stand in line once, not every Friday and Saturday. While it isn't the most fun, an old-fashioned "stand in line if you want tickets" program is the most fair. Other suggestions The irony of Buning's final "flat-ass rule" - no drunk and disorderly conduct by students - is saturating. The REA sells alcohol, and people become intoxicated when drinking alcohol. Do the math; if they really want to fight the war on intoxication, then ban the consumption of alcohol in the REA. As for making the REA more of a home ice advantage - for currently we are basically playing on neutral ice - how about some effort from the REA staff? Remember, a little bit goes a long way. Spice up the place; when resurfacing the ice, play "I Wanna Drive the Zamboni" by the Gear Daddies. When reviewing a goal, and the red light in the scorer's box comes on, play "Roxanne" by the Police. Little things like this. When an opposing player gets ejected, play "Hit the Road Jack" by Ray Charles. Students thrive off the REA, and vice versa. It should be a joint effort, not a fight against. If these demands aren't met, then students should either boycott, or sit in silence protest. Martin Luther King Day was only a week ago, embrace his philosophy, non-violent disobedience is the only way to make the student voice heard. At our next home series, if these grievances have not been addressed and met, we sit the entire game, and remain absolutely quiet. Then we'll see how much the REA needs us. So Mr. Buning, REA, here is your chance. You told students at our "mandatory" meeting that 95 percent of enrollment at UND is promoted through word-of-mouth. Well what kind of words do you think will be coming out of our mouths if you ruin student seating at the REA? I think they might clash with "flat-ass rule" number two.
