    Cam....is that you?

I thought Thome was shakey at first then he settled in nicely. You can tell he is slower then Cam, but my word he is huge! He got hit into the net at one point and someone in our viewing party said he looks like a bear just fell into the net! Haha...

Fun game to watch, wish I was there!

Yes he was shaky early but really settled in after the first period.  WI did their best to get him off balance, including a WI player hooking his stick and flipping it away into the corner.  It should have been a penalty.  No way it was an accident.  I would expect him to be even more confident and better tonight, now that he has that first game under his belt.  And if UND does their typical better game on Saturday night this could be fun.

We were in the Kohl Center back about 2006 when UND beat WI 3-2 in the NCAA regional championship and the place was rocking.  Last night it was dead in comparison.  Kind of sad for a historic program like WI.

  2. Let's give Thome credit for a good start but not overdo it.  WI had many great opportunities right in front of Thome but shot the puck high or wide or it deflected off something.  The last 30 minutes of the game WI outplayed UND, had many more Grade A chances.  Thome overplayed some shots and was then out of position for the rebound or second shot but luck was on his side.  It was good to see him win his first start but this could easily have been a 6-3 WI win but for some luck. As others have said, members of the team stepped up and stood out last night.  I think it was a step forward for the team, especially on Friday night.

Had a good time talking with some WI fans about our mutual hate of MN.  They really want to play UND every year.  It was embarrassing to them how empty the Kohl Center was.  At best it was maybe 50% full by mid-first period.

I'm planning on making one of the away game series this season but can only chose one and it has to be before x-mas break. I've got it narrowed down to the CC series or the Denver series. Obviously the Denver series will be more exciting hockey, so I'm leaning towards that trip. But when it comes down to travel, restaurants and day time activities, which of the two would you recommend? I know there is a direct flight out of Devils Lake to Denver for like $250

It depends upon what you would prefer to do in your non-hockey time.  Colorado Springs offers some great outdoor activities that are close in (Garden of the Gods for one), while Denver will offer more metropolitan options.

Tomek doesn't seem to have the attitude needed to play in the big time spotlight at UND... and I have this on good authority

I hope he can grow and thrive in the ushl and find success

What I have been told is maybe a slightly different angle in that he doesn't seem to have the right attitude to earn playing time and has not even been the second best goalie in practice.  He is young, and possibly thought that he was already good enough to play at this level.  If this is true, a year in the USHL might be of great benefit to him.

Well, it is May now, so we'll have to keep an eye out for it.

I have no problem remembering it because April and May are two ugly bill months.  April is income taxes and house insurance and May is property tax and hockey tickets.

That's good stuff!  However, in reality, Niskanen should be given a 0 game suspension, and a $0 fine, and they should apologize to him for giving him a 5 and a game last night.  That should have been a 2:00 minor.

I watched some of the post game stuff and it was so predictable...Trotz was asked about the hit and (correctly) explained that it was a "hockey play" and that Crosby was coming across and Niskanen braced himself...Crosby's body position was lowering as he was falling across the crease and Niskanen didn't bring his arms up, it just so happened that he got Crosby "up high" because of how Crosby was falling and said it was unfortunate that he got hurt, you don't like to see injuries like that, etc.

On the other hand, Sullivan wasn't too pleased, he refrained from commenting on it and looked very angry, obviously thinking that it was a dirty or bad play.

I can guarantee you that if it was Ovechkin that got hit like that by Brian Doumolin, the comments would be reversed, and Sullivan would be saying it was unfortunate, but not dirty and Trotz would be pissed!

When I saw the play, I would have been OK with a 2:00 minor because Niskanen got him up high, but there was absolutely no intent by Niskanen to cross check Crosby in the head.  He didn't take a run at him and cross check or elbow him in the head, it wasn't from behind, etc.  It just wasn't a "dirty" play and wasn't worth of a 5:00 major and a game.  I agree that it was unfortunate that it happened and that Crosby got injured, but I honestly think if that was the exact same scenario, only it was Patric Hornqvist that got hit and injured, that's a 2:00 minor.  You could also argue that Ovechkin should have received 2:00 for slashing Crosby, causing the whole issue.  I just think Niskanen got a raw deal.

I also had trouble seeing that as more than a 2:00 because of Crosby going down.  My only uncertainty is I don't know exactly how quickly an NHL player (Niskanen) can react as the situation changes (Crosby going down) and adjust in that type of sequence.  Definitely unfortunate.  And I can also see Pens fans thinking it was a dirty hit.  Nasty, yes.  Unfortunate, yes.  Deliberate, don't know.

The idea of 2 "Super Regionals" has always intrigued me.  Have 2 regions, East and West.  Host arenas will be good size arena's, maybe even NHL arenas if need be.  8 teams would be in each region of course.  Basically combine 2 regions into one , have 2 groups per region with the following schedule:

    WEST REGION

    Group A

    #1 v #4 - Thursday afternoon                          Group A Championship - Saturday

    #2 v #3 - Thursday evening

    Group B

    #1 v #4 - Friday afternoon                               Group B Championship - Sunday

    #2 v #3 - Friday evening

    EAST REGION

    Group A

    #1 v #4 - Thursday afternoon                          Group A Championship - Saturday

    #2 v #3 - Thursday evening

    Group B

    #1 v #4 - Friday afternoon                               Group B Championship - Sunday

    #2 v #3 - Friday evening

The concept is good but the schedule doesn't work well.  Fans traveling to the regional would have a commitment for at least three nights in a hotel, possibly four.  It would be very expensive for attendance.  Would have to condense it down to a two day event such as Friday/Saturday or many fans will not attend due to cost.  Also, the team costs would be pretty high (hotel/food) having to be in town that many days.  Group A teams would need to be in town by Wednesday for practice time and two teams wouldn't leave until late Saturday night or Sunday.  Otherwise, the basic concept is good.  The final consideration is that realistically how many fans are going to try to arrange tickets/travel in possibly as little as three days/four days to get to a regional.  Fans from eight teams suddenly trying to book flights?  So many issues, so little time.

At start of season every DI team declares where, if they are a #1 seed, they will host. Criteria is that facility must hold no less than 6000 fans. Home rinks allowed.

This would allow say Brown and Providence and ... < list here > ... all to combined book the Dunc and if one of them gets a #1 they play there.

If multiple teams that have reserved a common rink get #1s, well, ... < provision here >.

Some are gimmes: UND, DU, UMn, UW ...

Some would "combo up" like Brown and Providence call Dunc, or Yale/UConn/Qpac/SacHeart/Army all join and declare Bridgeport, or UMass/AmInt/HC all call Worcester.

Not a bad idea, but...... If I am an arena manager I will want some money and a firm reservation for the arena with a guarantee.  If the team(s) doing the arrangement don't get a #1 seed, I still get paid because I am not able to schedule something else at the arena on short notice.

I'm going out on a limb by predicting DU wins this game. That said, I wonder how soon Duluth will try to muck it up with the Pios on Saturday?

    Fixed your post.

I suppose that explains the UMD hockey jersey you wore to the Hoggsbreath a few weeks ago...

Liar Liar Pants on Fire.  You clearly were not paying attention, as usual.

  11. Man Denver looks good.  Making me feel a little better.

I said that I would not cheer for Duluth, but in the first game I rooted against Harvard.  I just could not go against the NCHC, more than it was for Duluth.  Made me feel sleazy.

Parallax has nothing to do with Hoff being over the line.  The only way for him to have been not across the line but still appear across the line would be if his skate was lifted up.  Still offsides.

Parallax would definitely have something to do with it, but the question is whether it is enough to cover the supposed gap.  The line is under the ice while the skate is on top of the ice.  From that kind of angle the white gap would appear to be larger than just the thickness of the ice.  Having said that, it is unknown whether that would be sufficient to cover what appears to be white between the line and Hoff's skate.
