  1. Stenehjem's opponent (I can't remeber his name) has criticized him for being involved in the lawsuit. I don't think there's much chance of Wayne losing the election, however.

I am not an attorney and don't play one on this board, but I believe that the AG and his office are working for the University and the State Board of Higher Education (the clients). I don't think a new AG would have much choice in the matter. The only thing he could possibly do is not work as hard on the case. That would be risky politically if it could be proven.

  2. Are Wisconsin and Minnesota the only teams that fans get jacked up over?

Those are the teams that more people get jacked up over. Personally, I think that there have only been a few nights that the place has really rocked. The Regional was the best example. Most of the Minnesota games have been good. Some of the Wisconsin games and a few others. It's a big place, it swallows up sound and you have a lot of people that are not hard core hockey fans.

  3. I have 4 tickets available in Section 306 Row M for both nights of the St. Cloud series on Nov. 3 and 4. The tickets are on the aisle, at the top of the stairs. I have to work both nights and can't make the games. Asking $20 per ticket. The tickets are in Grand Forks and we can make arrangements to get them to you.

  4. Do we really need to have the same discussion about the difference in atmosphere between the new Ralph and the old Ralph? All of the arguments are in past threads. It will never be the same as the old Ralph. But if you have thoughts about ways to improve things, please bring them up.

  5. I hit a few of those dances. Who was it that sang the "Lightning Bar" song? Whoever it was seemed like they came to the coliseum every year or am I just getting old and the memory is gone?

I think you are talking about Johnny Holm. He is still performing. He had several gigs around the area this past summer, including the fair in Grand Forks.

  6. ESPN.com has picked up the story.

Stenehjem said the lawsuit seeks to allow the University of North Dakota to use the nickname throughout the school year without being sanctioned in possible postseason play, along with unspecified money damages.
NCAA officials were not immediately available for comment. NCAA President Myles Brand has said the NCAA will defend its policy "to the utmost."
  7. In my opinion, this is the crappiest decision ever by the athletic department. I wouldn't mind paying for parking at the site but to pay $5 to take a GD shuttle bus because there is not adaquate parking at the arena is pathetic. We need to find out who is responsible for this decision and let him know directly what we think. I hope that loyal Sioux fans don't just roll over and take this. This nickle and dime crap needs to stop. Once again the average fan gets stuck.

I doubt that the Athletic Department had much to do with this. According to the press release, the UND traffic office issued the notice. Athletics just passed on the information. The traffic office controls the parking lots. Parking has been an issue on campus for as long as I remember, that's why they are building the ramp. As someone else suggested, at least part of this decision is probably to help pay for upkeep on some lots that take a lot of abuse.

Paying for parking is a fact of life in most places. Have you tried to find a free parking spot in the Twin Cities for an event? The Alerus Center is going to start charging for parking in 2007. I think that another part of big city living has arrived in Grand Forks.

  8. The parking issue is UND not the Ralph. All parking lots on campus will now enforce regular parking passes (S, H, A, G) until 10 PM. People without passes will be ticketed (I don't know about any towing). They talked about doing this last year in the middle of the season but decided to wait. People without parking passes will be allowed to park in the big lot by Memorial Stadium or the lot behind Tabula for $5 per game or $65 for the year. Lot attendants will have daily passes available and I think they will also have the season passes. Season passes are also available at Barnes and Noble. My guess is that the reason for this is 2 fold, to help pay the cost of the shuttles and to raise money (possibly for the move up??).

Bottom line is that if you are a student, staff, faculty or have a regular campus parking pass you just use that. If you don't have one of those you will have to pay to use either of those lots and are not allowed to park in any other UND lot, including the Nursing school.

  9. 1984-1989, iirc

The driving force behind the interlocking schedule was hockey east commish Lou Lamoriello, to try to lend credibility to the new conference. The games counted in the official Hockey East league standings.

It was discontinued (again, iirc) because it was a major financial commitment for everyone involved and because by 1989/1990 it had basically served its purpose.

A couple of posts later I had found the answer. It was actually to help both conferences because the WCHA was short of members at that time.

  10. There was an official scheduling link between the WCHA and Hockey East during the 80's and/or early 90's as was mentioned earlier. I would have to do a little research to get the exact years. IIRC it was because one of the leagues was having problems with their schedules. There was no trophy that I remember, but every WCHA team played 1 or 2 series against East teams each year.

I found the WCHA history of the link.

The WCHA became more formal in 1973, when the league office assumed all conference scheduling. A plan was passed in 1979 to split the conference into two divisions as a cost-cutting move, but was rescinded three months later. Then, in 1981, Michigan, Michigan State, Michigan Tech. and Notre Dame all defected to the CCHA. The loss of Michigan Tech. was a double blow, as they took the MacNaughton Cup, presented to the WCHA Champion every year, along with them.

The WCHA survived as a six-team league, then expanded again in 1984 when Michigan Tech. returned (with the MacNaughton Cup), and brought Northern Michigan with them. The same year saw the start of an interlocking schedule with Hockey East, which lasted for five seasons. All inter-conference games counted in each conference's standings.

  12. Yeah, I am focused on the negative when it comes to Minnesota. Being eternally optimistic about the Vikings only to have Red McCombs and Dennis Green come to town can do that to you. After the train wreck McCombs made of the organization and the circus freakshow Green (and by extension Tice) made of the team, I can't really root for the team in its current set up.

What you are saying does make sense, though I predicted an 0-3 start. I will give credit to the Vikings for taking advantage of two teams that were plagued in key positions by injuries (Carolina and Washington), but they lost to the only team they faced that wasn't missing a key component of their team to injury. I won't go as far as to say that the Vikings are the most overrated team in the NFL (Carolina and Atlanta hold that distinction) and certainly the Vikings have a long way to go to be the worst team in the NFL (Gosh, hard to displace the Packers, Lions, and Raiders in that position). But I don't see the Vikings being even as good (NFL wise) as the Twins were this year (MLB wise). They just don't have the ability to score points thus far. They've had to rely too heavily on their defense to make picks, and Ryan Longwell to make kicks (and fakes). I'll be remiss to say that they won't appear to right the ship against Detroit. Green Bay could score against the Lions so I doubt the Vikings will have any trouble whatsoever. However, when they play their next solid opponent, if they can't do anything offensively (I don't care how many 20+ yard receptions or runs the Vikings get, if they occur outside of the 20 yard line or don't result in a TD or put them in position to score, they don't matter), it will be VERY difficult for the Vikings to win. That being said, I can't wait for the Vikings to play the Packers. With Favre's ability to make "passes only Brett Favre can make" (to those not named Madden those passes are called INTs), I don't think the Vikings will even have to put their offense onto the field.

It will be difficult for the Vikings to do as well as the Twins since the Twins are currently only 1 game away from having the best record in baseball, and still have a chance to finish with the best record. The Vikings will not have one of the top 3 records in the NFL this year.

The Vikings are in the process of changing the entire focus of the team. They are going from a team dependent on the offense to a team dependent on the defense. They also have changed most of the schemes and have many key new players, especially on the offensive line. The offensive line often takes the longest to get coordinated. Before the season started I expected it to take 4-6 games before they really get untracked. The running game should improve after that. Unless they have more major injury problems, I expect them to finish within a couple of games of .500, 1 way or the other. That may be enough to get them into the play-offs as a wild card because I don't see any great teams in the NFC this year. Although anything can happen in a football game, I would be surprised if they win more than 1 game in the play-offs this year, if that. Next year they should be a play-off team unless they have major injury problems.

  13. Secondly, the problem with your road game argument is that both teams will be IN North Dakota. Its the fans here in North Dakota that will lose out. The way to maximize revenues is not to play. More North Dakota fans will be ticket buyers without the game.

I disagree with several of your points, but this one is the most obvious. Both schools try to set up as many home games as possible, but they also have to play road games. So a UND-NDSU game would be one of the home games on the schedule for the home team and one of the road games on the schedule for the traveling team. The road team would probably get the normal fee for a road game in IAA (with much less expense) and the home team gets higher than normal revenues (premium ticket price and a full house). It is a win-win for both programs financially. It probably also pays more for television rights than any event in North Dakota.

Your premise only holds if the visiting team is giving up a home game (or possibly a lucrative contract against a IA team). Since no team gets to play the entire season at home that part isn't likely. Wouldn't it be nice if one of your road games was only an hour drive instead of on the East or West Coast? And most of the IA teams schedule several years in advance so that can be worked around if either team has that opportunity.

The biggest reason this series will resume is because it becomes one of the biggest events of the year in the region. Most people in the area want the schools to play. They fill stadiums and watch televisions. It creates a lot of interest and publicity for both schools. So even if it wasn't a big win financially (which it is), it still makes sense for them to play. And if the schools end up in the same football conference than the whole argument is moot.

  14. Here are a few of my thoughts on the game today from being there. WW played a good game. They were more physical than I would have expected. They have some decent quality skill players. They had a great offensive scheme in the first half. Everything was 3 step drops or less and quick hitters. UND's defensive line did not have time to get any pressure and the D backs were playing soft. WW got a lot of 5-10 yard plays. Also, the 2 successful trick plays in the game made a big difference.

UND seemed a little flat and half a step slow in the beginning. The D was slow to adjust to the offense. In the second half they seemed to play tighter coverage. This made WW adjust their patterns and use deeper drops which gave the D line time to get pressure. Other than a big trick play, WW did very little on offense in the second half. Belmore had some good series and some bad. The offensive line seemed to take more control in the second half and the running game picked up speed and a lot of yards. Penalties hurt some in the second half.

It was an ugly game. The kicking game for both teams had problems. After playing well in the first 3 games, UND may have had a little bit of a let down for a non-ranked opponent. Belmore is still not playing as well as he did early last year, either he needs to improve or Manke needs to heal quickly. There is still plenty of room for this team to improve, but I think this is a very strong team with a lot of potential. They also have to face some strong teams in the NCC. It should be fun watching the NCC season develop.
