  1. Well looks like we might as well get some BC shirts made too. Its so easy for everyone to rip on the gophers, but lucky for the sioux parise put the team on his back and helped them beat mankato which was a play in series because the sioux couldnt put together a good enough regular season to guarantee themselves a spot in the Final 5. The sioux could have very well not even been there. Parise's show ended today, and i dont really think it was all UND's falt because their offense was strong but it was match by the play of BC's goaltender.

No one can guarantee a trip to the Final 5 during the regular season. UND played well enough during the regular season (4th place) to be at home for the first round of the playoffs (against Mankato). All first round series in the WCHA playoffs are play-ins to get to the Final 5.

I think that there is a big difference between losing to Holy Cross in the first round of the NC$$ tournament and losing to BC in the Frozen Four. UND lost today because they made mistakes in their own end and BC took advantage of those mistakes. BC has a long tradition of success in hockey and UND-BC has developed into a major rivalry in the tournament. This was their (BC's) year to win. But UND played hard throughout the game and didn't give up until the final horn blew.

  2. i dont get it. its hilarious, but was this the real interview?;)

Read the disclaimer (the quote box at the very top of the first post). The interview is a figment of PCM's fertile imagination. They didn't do a coach's show this week. It was written in fun.

  3. How much snow we get throughout the course of a winter doesn't always mean much. We got a lot of snow late in the winter that contained a great deal of moisture. It melted suddenly and the snowmelt was accompanied by heavy rainfall. Thus, we have flooding.

There have been other winters during which we received much more snow, but because of the manner in which it melted and a lack of precipitation accompanying the snowmelt, flooding wasn't as severe as this spring. It all depends on the timing of events.

Two other factors that add to the problem. We had plenty of moisture last fall so the soil was pretty saturated already. Also, I think they got more snow in the southern part of the valley than we did. It seemed like several storms missed us but hit Fargo and south.

  4. He is a lot more full of knowledge now that HockeyMom schooled him, not only on the WCHA, but the University of North Dakota.....and for free, I might add. I enjoyed it.

(How far has your sanity slipped when you start referring to yourself in third person on a regular basis)

Seriously, how can you even argue that Hockey East has been better than the WCHA in recent history? The WCHA has won five of the last six National Titles, and the last four in a row.

Here is some more ammo for you HockeyMom. These are the winning percentages of Hockey East vs. the WCHA over the past several years (from the Hockey East web site).

    2005-06 8-8-1 .500

    2004-05 5-12-2 .272

    2003-04 6-7-3 .469

    2002-03 8-9-1 .472

    2001-02 5-13-1 .289

    2000-01 9-11-4 .458

  5. I just think that if UND is looking at a major change, like moving all sports to DI, you might as well explore all options. That means looking at dropping sports and also looking at other sports to see if there is a better fit that could be added. Now seems to be a good time to look at lax.

  6. As far as "northern school", which "northern schools" have any real hope of winning a DI baseball title? Miami, Texas, Arizona State, and LSU will tell you "none."

Now a northern school with lax, and with a dome and historically good ties to Canada (where lacrosse is the other national sport), could be a whole other matter.

UMTC has done well in baseball and is probably one of the few northern schools that could compete in the College World Series. They have the advantage of playing in the Metrodome for early season games. Maybe UND could have that same advantage in lax. I hope that the committee takes a close look at lax as a part of the exploration of DI.

  7. Carlton said Presbyterian is well-suited for the move in terms of facilities. Minor improvements are necessary in baseball and softball. Presbyterian has played four seasons of football at 6,500-seat Bailey Memorial Stadium. Furman Pinson Arena seats 2,000 for basketball and volleyball.

Those seem small for a DI program. Of course the school only has about 1,200 students.

  8. I know this has little bearing on hockey, but why preempt NCAA hockey tourney for the Timberwolves? They're out of contention and they suck. This is a tourney here, not some regular season whoopdedoo...

It's like the DII NC football game a few years back where UND/GVSU was preempted by High School basketball.

I am sure that the answer is contractual obligations. FSN pays big dollars for the rights to broadcast pro sports and the contracts probably spell out what they will broadcast in the case of conflicts in schedules. Pro sports will almost always win those battles.

  9. Hak was great at the Alum affair after the championship game. I have a great picture of him taking a shot of tequila with some friends of mine. He's not the old stick in the mud so many of you were grousing about these past two years.

The thing he said that caught my attention was that the team learned how to win a championship and protect a lead in last night's game, and that those things would be important in the NC$$ tournament.

  10. One other factor to consider in financial support is the success of the athletic programs. Long term this may be one of the most important factors. The novelty of going DI will wear thin if the program doesn't have success over a length of time. That can include conference success or upsets of big name programs on occassion. A program that is successful in DII at the national level on a consistent basis may provide more excitement and attract more dollars than a DI program that has limited success. UND will need to make the proper commitment in high visibility programs if they decide to go DI.

  11. Using a 4-2.5-1 bonus and the following scenario got us all the way to the 3rd #1 seed. I also found a different scenario using a 3-2-1 bonus that left us in a tie at #16 with Boston College and out of the tournament. I think it shows that almost anything is still possible.

    1 Minnesota (Mn) 29 .5839*

    2 Wisconsin (Wi) 28 .5775*

    3 North Dakota (ND) 26 .5623

  12. Back in the day when the name Gambucci was synonymous with North Dakota hockey, did one of Serge's sons play at UM?

Gary Gambucci played for UMTC back in the 60's. I think he was Serge's Son.

  13. I'm game. I see most of the games from my seats in 306 and have watched women's games and WJC games from the lower bowl but haven't had a chance to sit in a suite. It sounds like fun, so count me in as long as I know ahead of time so that I can make sure that I don't have to work that night.

  14. I think that with indoor facilities it is pretty difficult to expand seating.....you really can't raise roofs to get more height, and I am sure knocking out an exterior wall would be tough too as all exterior walls would be load bearing. I would suspect the dollars to expand almost any indoor arena would be huge.

Some buildings are built with expansion in mind. A specific wall or section may be built so that it can be removed to expand the building. I have no idea if the Alerus Center was built that way or not. But I believe that the rafters are anchored on the east and west walls which may make it possible to expand to the south.

  15. As I remember it, there were three or four candidates running and the top two got on the city council. I believe he was the second highest vote getter. I still don't know how that happened. Maybe it was the UND student vote.

I think you are right PCM. My memory isn't always so good at 2 AM. I think that the students were a major part of his victory. I remember that Hoff was very visible, and not nearly as controversial when he was a candidate. The recall election was a great process to witness.

  16. But they refused to comment on it, which, to the pro nickname change crowd AND the NCAA, qualifies as a No vote.

In any case, the court case, which only fools would not be preparing for, must be run and planned very carefully by the UND side. We can't screw it up.

Yes, they refused to comment on it during this process. But the resolution passed in 2000 still stands as the official position of the tribe. A court would recognize that resolution instead of a no comment in 2005. I am sure that UND will use these facts as part of their legal battle, along with all of the other issues mentioned in the last appeal.

  17. Don't forget about his City Council days. Some how he won his ward. Made an ass of himself on Channel 3. Made the ratings for City Council meetings go through the roof, then his ward re-called him.

He won because no one ran against him. I live in that ward. It wasn't long before people in the ward were trying to figure out how to recall Mr. Hoff.

  18. Now it only takes the approval of 1 band or tribe? Did they consult any other band of Choctaw? Does this mean that they will approve the UND appeal because Spirit Lake isn't opposing? What happens if either Spirit Lake or Standing Rock actually gives their approval?

In those instances in which a tribe endorses the use of its name and associated imagery, the NCAA defers to the judgment and will of the tribe.

From this statement in the news release it seems like it will only take 1 tribe to get the NC$$ out of this issue, at least for a little while.
