  1. No discount price. Just opportunity to renew same seats and maybe get an upgrade.

Also, they throw in a 1970's WCHA history dvd. Next year will be the 80's. Then the 90's. Then the '00's.

I thought this year was the '80s. Damn.

I consider not having the Ticketb*stard fees as a form of discount, I guess. I believe the first year you have to bite the bullet and pay the fees and then after that you'll get into the renewal process.

  2. Because that's hard. Each conference has its own tournament structure, way to break ties, etc... Implementing that has been in the middle of my to-do list forever, but has never bubbled to the top.

Part of that is because the conference tournaments *generally* only provide upside opportunity. Except for the WCHA play-in round, they're one-and-done, so the worst each participant can do is 1 loss and some number of wins. This time of year we're generally concerned about whether a team will make the tournament or not, so the focus is on how low they can fall. Once the conference tournaments are seeded, I run a complete breakdown of all of the possible outcomes, which usually contains a few surprises.

Oh, I'm sure. Really the only reason you might have a problem is if your zero wins scenario came true plus you had a brutal playoff. I was just giving you a hard time.

  3. Could still happen ;)

Anyway, my real point in posting was just to confirm that Lefty is, of course, right on the tie-breakers for seeding. Note that there is no tie-breaker for the actual championship, both teams are champs. That question comes up every year... I'm starting a FAQ.

I appreciate your attempt to lift my spirits, but really the only thing that will work is two big fat wins this weekend. Eek.

  4. To be honest, if the Sioux don't win the MacNaughton this year, it will be a bit disappointing. We have, hands down, the most talented team in the WCHA...even the country. Denver has over-achieved, but are still pretty good, so to lose to them would be a bit shocking. Duluth is a real good team, so losing to them wouldn't be as painful, but we are still the better team.

We just have to take care of business.

I wouldn't worry about Duluth. Blah. I'm very depressed about the team right now. tUMD threw in the towel and now I'm like praying for 3rd place.

  5. I'm sure the BTHC will make sure the Gofers know that they are special... :)

Minny definitely has the most to lose in the Big Ten scenario...what happens to their TV deal with FSN? Where is the Big Ten conference tourney to be held? (referenced above) They also potentially lose out on playing teams of historical significance (UND, DU, CC) and teams with local ties (UMD, St Cloud, Mankato, Bermidji). What's the attendance at Mariucci looking like with Ohio State and Penn State coming in vs the traditional WCHA teams? Could be tough for a couple years anyway...

Also, you replace series that were primarily short bus rides for airline flights to Columbus, Happy Valley, etc. That will cost them a few bucks as well.

Big Ten Hockey Conference is BAD for college hockey, imo.

I agree UMTC has the most to lose. However, the smaller conference schedule is a huge boon for them. They will travel to 5 conference series, probably also travel to UND, and force everyone else to play them in their rink or never play them again.

  6. Are you assuming the BTHC would snag St. Paul for its conference tourney? My guess is the BTHC would choose Chicago or something more "Big Ten"

There would still be 4 Minnesota teams in the WCHA, so St. Paul would still make a lot of sense for the WCHA. Omaha certainly has the facility. Denver wouldn't draw well IMO.

I would imagine that some member schools would not like it if it was in St. Paul every year. The Joe would be another option if the BTHC decided to eff over the CCHA. The Bradley Center too. Or Columbus's arena. I doubt Michigan, Sparty, tOSU and Penn State would be as willing to roll over and let MN (and to some extent UW) have the home field advantage every year. tWCHA would probably use the Xcel and in the years where the BTHC rotated into tX, the tourney would be in Denver.

Adding Miami and ND to the conference would be sweet and would certainly keep the level of competition high.

  7. I look at it this way, the Final Five is an excuse to get out of work with paid vacation and reload and get mentally prepared for the spring and summer. I am sure once the Big Ten Hockey Farce is upon us the WCHA may look at revamping the WCHA conference tourney. I could care less what my tickets look like... Like someone mentioned earlier the new Broadmoor Throphy is ugly. Nice that the Sioux won the first new one though...

Oh, no, I agree. Folks like you and I consider the Final Five like a holiday. However, not everyone does, there are plenty of fans who go only if their team is in, which is okay. Imagine flying in from Anchorage to see them get bounced on thursday, compared with flying in from Anchorage and seeing three games like their fans got in 2004.

  8. I was actually going to start this thread! Wasn't too happy not seeing black ice on the cover of my tickets.. Glad you called the X actually, just to see what was up. I guess it makes sense being that the tournament consists of two more teams, o'well. I do hope there is another way to restructure this tournament for years to come. In my opinion, the 7:30 game on Thursday was perfect! Now 3 pm and 7:30 (or whatever it is)..... I don't know how much can be done in restructuring it, but the Wild game shouldn't even be tossed into the advertisement of this tournament, unless the tickets are free :) Glad to see sioux sports finest are coming out to rip on you beebs for voicing your opinions....

While I disagree with a little of your post (o.p. was a little histrionic), I do agree that the format of the tournament totally sucks. Under the old format, three fanbases were guaranteed two games and two fanbases gambled on getting either one or three games. Now no fanbases are guaranteed more than one game, not even the top seeds. I live in the Twin Cities and always take Thursday and Friday off anyway and I go to the games even when tUMD is not there, but it would totally stink if I had to take two days off work, spend money driving/flying in, and book a hotel room for three nights only to see my team lose at 3PM on Thursday afternoon.

  9. I just hope mine show up. But it is real interesting to change the ticket with no real reason. I always thought it was neat to have the champs on the next year tix.

Well, they already changed the trophy to that stupid hotel replica, and they changed the format of the tournament, so I guess nothing's safe? I have my ticket pack from last year up in my cube because tUMD is on there, and I did think it was cool, but certainly not something to rage about.

However, if the original poster feels his tickets are now worthless, I'll gladly take them off his hands for $5 per set.

  10. Ryan Duncan was always known as a good guy during his time at UND...Always giving credit to his teammates, always had time for Sioux fans...It's no wonder he is my son's all time favorite player.

Two weeks ago, I sent him an email, care of his team overseas, and asked him for a note or picture for my son. Yesterday, we received a note, along with 2 signed hockey cards from Duncan. They will be proudly displayed with his Ryan Duncan-Hobey Baker puck in his room.

Thanks to Ryan; a good hockey player, but a better person! :)

If you don't mind, what did the note say? Just hi/best wishes/Go Sioux, or was it more personal? That's so neat!

  11. That's a great question, I never really though of the fact that it could vary (so it must have been someone else who posted it).

Nonetheless, I have the historical rankings handy, so here's what I count for the last Monday each March:

    2010: 31

    2009: 29

    2008: 31

    2007: 28

    2006: 28

    2005: 27

    2004: 30

So, the last few weeks that it's been 32-34 would apparently be unusually high.

Oh, you truly are the best in the business at PWR. I bow to the master.

I wonder, though, if at this point in the season during the seasons you listed, there were more teams with a .500 RPI and that the number shrinks as the end of the season approaches.

  12. Yeah, I saw that too. He's not wrong in the facts, UND did drop two spots, but it's not really as important as you might think just reading that post. As I mentioned in the weekend prediction, UND's comparison wins over Denver and BC were hanging by a thread; they temporarily flipped due to this minor move, but the outcome at the end of the weekend will still be determined by those teams' own performances. If BC and Denver win, they'll hold onto those comparisons (which they would've taken whether Robert Morris won or lost). If BC and Denver lose, those comparisons will flip back to UND.

Come Monday, whether Robert Morris won or lost won't have had any direct effect on UND's ranking. In the long run, there are currently at least 4 teams within .01 of .500 in RPI who UND has a winning record against (Alaska, St. Cloud, Bemidji, Robert Morris) -- how many of those end up above and below the TUC line will have a small impact. (AA will also be in that camp if UND emerges with a winning record vs. them).

Jim, I think you posted this earlier when the whole re-definition of TUC came out, but how many teams are usually at .500 RPI or better, come season end?

  13. and why is it hard to believe alcohol wasn't involved with you? It wouldn't shock me either way, but you seem adamant that it was and it seems to be your first thought. Most people on here are more prone to jump to conclusions toward the negative side, and I find that unfair. I don't think anyone here has the mentality that we never do wrong and if you honestly believe that, you're being kind of naive. Using the past indescretions as an example, why would any of us say the sioux do no wrong? That's COMPLETELY misguided. Hak said there were no rules broken, and I don't think he would say that if it wasn't true. He hasn't hid from the facts of all the other incidents over the years and I don't see him starting now. The fact of the matter is, the Kristo's requested privacy. UND is respecting those wishes and so should everyone else but apparently everyone else thinks it's their "right" to know, when it's not. Sorry, but there's more important things to worry about.

Agreed. I don't think it's suspicious at all that his family and he want privacy. Some people just don't want people knowing all their business, even if there's nothing shady about it. I know that it's now the trend to overshare every single piece of information about oneself, but not everybody wants that.

He could have simply wanted privacy because he was freaking out, expecting the worst, and terrified he'd never play hockey again, and he didn't want to talk about it with everyone and their grandfather.

  14. Donn actually went to that one year while we are down there... Not my cup of tea...

Lol. Perhaps other people might find it their cup of tea? Did he go by himself? In a van, with candy?

I wonder what it's going to be like this year. It's going to be a heck of a lot more stressful! Nobody is guaranteed to see their team more than once, not even the top seeds. That's my biggest pet peeve. I enjoyed those guaranteed games and I am sure many out-of-towners did, too.

  15. Good points, you don't have to worry about D.D.'s and you don't have to worry about finding parking. Last season I parked my car on Thursday in the lot and didn't drive it till I went home on Sunday. The area around the Xcel has awesome bars and places to eat.

There's family stuff, too. The Science Museum is right across the street from the Xcel and would be a great Saturday outing for folks not planning to catch the Wild game.
