  1. Playing so many games on the road in the second half of the season, I believe, really limits the team's chance of being a 1-2-3 WCHA team when you look at the talent/ability of those 4 teams.

By the time playoffs start we may not be a "1-2-3" WCHA team but, I think, we'll be one of the "scariest" teams in the nation, the team other teams don't want to meet in a playoff situation. And that's the situation in which Coach Blais' teams shine.

Selective edit of my Sept post -- nice to go back and see what we all expected from the team. It was easy to get swept up mid-season with the "non" losing streak. Although it wasn't expected that this team would be under .500 in the last 10 games, the team is poised to do what many expected them to do at the beginning of the year -- compete for a playoff berth. In two weeks the new season begins and I believe this team will be ready to go and ready to prove something to themselves, their fans and their opponents. Go Sioux.

  2. What a weekend. While it is only a game I've been "blue" all day and I couldn't figure it out. After reading this board and poi and uscho I think I finally figured it out. After 4 years of gutsy effort there is a good chance that the 3 seniors won't have a chance to do a final stick salute in front of the home crowd. That just plain sucks. While it was great to have the 3 senior players and their parents introduced/acknowledged pre game it just isn't the same as the end of game center ice salute. Crap.

Is that enough babbling? ??? Go Sioux.

  3. The Mankato coach and players did the same thing.

add to that 2 events with UND. What is the common denominator? NDSU. More specifically Gene Taylor.

There are a lot of good people who support the Bison who don't deserve the press these events are generating. After the first incident dating back to the Mankato incident there should have been very severe consequences (it wouldn't have hurt to have had the consequences be very public too). Instead you have JBB type attitudes of "they brought it on themselves". THAT IS NOT THE QUESTION THAT IS NOT THE POINT THAT IS NOT THE ISSUE ------ there have now been 3 racial controversies at NDSU, all with apologies but nothing leading to positive results. Plain and simple, lack of leadership. Put in place a "zero" tolerance and those comments aren't made, let those comments continue and then issue an apology after the fact and the current uproar/situation in Fargo is the result.

  4. If you haven't gotten through just give it a little time -- the e-mail with the link should come back almost right away, however the link in that e-mail for the form was not available -- after about 10 minutes of trying to enter the link I was able to and receive confirmation very quickly. Wohoo!

  5. CB was on this afternoon with Mike Mc. of 1310 --- only caught bits and pieces --- Mike asked about the hate of failure for both the team and for the individuals. Asked about team being on edge and fights and excuses -- CB said it is up to the coaches to hold the team together over rough stretches.

Mike's jr high son sat near JN and ZP last night at the ND high school hockey tourney and the son was over the moon -- Mike said they could've said pick that popcorn up over the floor and the son would have been over the moon BUT the son said how cool and nice the boys were. Mike said he'd heard so many good things about this group of guys ... CB said he's been told many times that this is the best mannered group of guys they've seen.

goaltending question: probably Jake on Sat. with Josh back-up and then on Sun. Marc or Josh --- was hoping to have 1 guy come forward, but that's not the case so it be alternating goalies.

  6. You can stay up in the north bar of the ralph until 1:00 am.

I'm not sure how it'll work on Saturday as there are high school games after the UMD-UND game -- don't know if they'll ask you to leave once the game is finished.

    Main streets/road in GF:

north/south are 42nd Street, Columbia road and Washington

east/west are Gateway Dr (aka Hwy 2), Demers and 32nd Ave

if you're on those 6 streets you'll find pretty much everything you'll need (The Ralph, food & drink establishments, hotel)

Columbia Road : The Ralph (north end); Green Mill with Borrowed Bucks bar next door; Applebees; Buffalo Wild Wings; both on S. Columbia near the mall

42nd Street: Dagwoods (smoke free bar with food)

Washington: generally everything -- restaurants and fast food

Hwy 2/Gateway: The Ralph; road to Duluth; Fire Island Grill & Bar; dominos

Demers: downtown GF: Bonzers; 2 blocks north of Demers on 3rd Street is Joe Dimaggio's

downtown EGF: on the boardwalk: Blue Moose; Applebees; Whitey's; Mike's Pizza; a bar or two

    32nd Ave S (by the mall) Grizzly's; Branigan's

The only place you "need" to swing by not on one of those 6 streets is The Red Pepper -- located on University Ave, 2 blocks east of N. Washington.

Pretty much the exact same info as everyone else.

Oh, forgot about the cafe at the Big Sioux Truckstop -- intersection of 32nd Ave S and I-29 -- Zudnic, BC fan from USCHO, stopped there to ride the "semi" ride game -- decent food too.

  7. That's what I figured but with the omnipresent and omniscient thought police I better make it clear otherwise it'd appear on uscho as something crazy. (Especially since I went on and on in the first post and most sane people would quit reading it by the 3rd paragraph and not read Coach Sandelin's feelings on the subject.)

  8. Prior to Sandy being on the radio Tim mentioned that in talking with Sandy (to set up today's interview) ..... Sandy's son was talking about what to say to CB -- it was something like this that he came up with --- hi Dean, good luck, go sioux, NOT! hahaha ----

and dagies I know you know Scott really meant what he said later "Oh sh*t" why do we have to play them now, they'll be really angry -- :0

  9. Tim: glad to be coming to GF? Sandy: real good timing to be coming to GF (said tongue in cheek) ... regardless of what they've (UND) done the weekend before we have to be ready to play.

UMD has found ways to get points this year, with the exception of Mankato. UMD needs to go into the playoffs with confidence. We're (UMD) young and with that you expect inconsistencies, especially with the addition of new players after Christmas. It's been a fun and exciting season to see us (UMD) challenge for home ice -- that's a 1st for this group of seniors.

Swyg: what a scramble, crazy season it's been. Sandy: it's been a unique year, we (UMD) and Mankato are doing well. While we (UMD) might not be the top level we (UMD) can play with them and hold our own -- the goal is to get to the Final 5 - it'll take a lot of hard work, but this group is up to it. The difference from last year to this year: last year in the 2nd half of the season we (UMD) started to come along but we (UMD) lacked depth. This year the kids worked hard over the summer. There are not a lot of seniors, a few juniors, the bulk are freshmen & sophomores.

Some comments about taking over a team -- the key is to determine what types of players you have -- there was a style of play he wanted them to do, however, playing a different style would have probably resulted in more wins. There are good leaders on the team and it's not just the guys wearing the "C" and/or the "A".

3 of the last 5 games (SCSU and UMN) have been sellouts at the Decc. The Denver series, although not a sellout, was well attended.

Tim: How is it going with Lee Davidson on the coaching staff? Sandy: Lee has a knowledge of the game, he was a great addition for our coaching staff -- he's a guy who knows how to win, he's on the road a lot.

Tim: we've got to mention goaltending, the freshman Isaac Reichmuth has been the man Sandy: Rob Anderson the senior, had played well, but since the UAA Isaac has taken over, but..... Rob came in and beat both Denver and UMN -- the goaltending situation is one of the biggest reasons for where they are -- there was criticism of Sandy for bringing in another goalie (Isaac) as that led to another goalie leaving the program.

(there was some talk about other players, but I missed what was said) also talk on TJ Caig - he's gotten better each weekend, it takes awhile to get in stride joining a team 1/2 way through the season -- he is averaging 1 point/game Tim: Dean's team has struggled -- really missing David Hale .... Sandy's reaction to finding out that UND lost 2 to Mankato last weekend - oh, sh*t - we have to focus on the game (1st trip for UMD to the Ralph) --- keep it tight and get some bounces.

4:15 pm on Friday afternoon UMD gets ice time for an hour (barring overtime of the high school tourney game prior to then)

** Please do not take this as a complete transcript -- it is what it is -- a post GENERALLY based on the interview this morning -- there are very few VERBATIM sentences -- this is not to be used outside of this forum! :0

Final note: CB is scheduled to be the last guest on the coaches show tonight

  10. Thanks Hammy for posting your opinion regarding this thread here and then running to post it on USCHO just in case we didn't notice how you felt about it. You are saying we're whiners, right? :0 Did you post it on POI yet?

  11. Speaking of Mr. Palmo --- he is pictured on the front page of the EGF paper, The Exponent. www.rrv.net/page1pub (following links to The Exponent for Feb 19, 2003) He is pictured along with Sherrie White (captain of the women's team) reading a book to kids at the EGF Family Service Center. They have the attention of those little tikes.

  12. AC David Hakstol was on this morning with "Swyg Alone" .... pretty much same info from coaches show. David Hale skated lightly yesterday -- looking at the long term (effects) will determine amount of action he sees -- when he's ready he'll go in. Just David's presence (or lack there of) on the road and in the lockerroom has a substantial bearing on the attitude of the team.

MSU-M has some talented players who've really produce for them -- MSU-M has always been a lunch pail - hard working team.

Brandt and Ranfranz did both travel to MSU-M but no word on who'll see action tonight/tomorrow.

  13. Here is another article on the situation http://www.madison.com/captimes/sports/uw/...ockey/43062.php

This article is interesting as Alex is pretty specific in the events leading up to the event, and specific in what occurred in the room at the Holiday Inn.

Alex states that this is coming out now (event happened 11/23/02 and Eaves apologized to the team 2 days after the event) because tension has arose from the situation: "it's that I was isolated from the team and get a negative feeling from being on the team".

It is interesting that the teammate present in the room (a freshman) is silent so far -- is he worried about treatment from the coaching staff if he comes out in total support of Alex's version. It seems pretty evident that regardless if Alex's version is 100% accurate, his teammates aren't too supportive of him (as I mentioned maybe they're worried about their playing time/relationship with the coaching staff as it appears, for now at least, Eaves will retain his job).

I need some help here: when Chris F. left the team couldn't he have played for UAA this year if UND had given him something like a mutual release? If that is the case I'd say let this kid go where ever he wants -- enforce the current sanctions/anger-management classes on Eaves (if those sancations were determined to be appropriate at the time of the "offense", why now fire him or lodge more sancations when it appears Eaves has taken steps to atone for his actions and hasn't been a repeat offender).

Major Juniors probably would be a good choice for Alex at this point. Like the rest of you I believe there is no place for physical abuse in a player/coach relationship, but the lead up to the confrontation, the actual confrontation and the slowly evolving fallout from the confrontation looks and smells funny-strange. Bottom line for me: "I" wouldn't want to see Alex in a Sioux uniform (but then I'm not a coach, thank goodness).

  14. Regarding scoring:

MSU (overall and in conference only play) has scored 8 less goals than their opponents in the 1st period. In the 2nd period (all games) they have scored 9 goals more than their opponents and 12 more goals in the 3rd period. In 3 of the overtimes they've played they've scored twice and have been scored on once.

Key -- jump on them early and then stay out of the penalty box in the 2nd and 3rd periods.

  15. Okay -- this is a huge weekend for both teams. From the comments I've seen (check out the wcha site) MSU-M is hyping this series.

Some comments from the director of athletics of MSU-M "....little doubt we are skating the most important series in school history" this is MSU's men's hockey alumni weekend it is also their men's team senior night on Saturday night (a band will be playing pre game music)

They want to break all time single event attendance mark, and the attendance record for a series. "I absolutely expect a sellout on both nights.... I hope we can sell one or both games out in advance, which would be another first for MSU hockey." They are planning on a "whiteout" a regular snow storm of support for the Mavericks -- 5000 white hankies.

    Previous top home crowds: #1 UND 2/26/00 of 5144 #2 UMN 11/9/02 of 5084 and #3 UND 2/25/00 & UMN 2/9/01 of 4931

The administration at MSU sounds totally pumped up, why not they are on a 14 game unbeaten streak - tickets are going, going, gone.

MSU is currently 10-5-7 in the WCHA

In GF it was a 6-6 tie and a 5-4 Sioux win. Overall UND holds a 13-5-5 record over MSU, HOWEVER in the last 5 games MSU is 2-1-2 vs. UND.

conference only goalie stats for the two (probable starters)

    Jensen, a junior, 16 games (14 starts) is 6-4-5 for .567 win % 49 goals against and a save % of .897 gaa of 3.26

    Volp, a sophomore, 9 games (8 starts) is 5-0-2 24 goals against and a save % of .904 gaa of 3.0

Wish I could be there ---- those of you going have fun maybe wear something other than white and bring your bright green Sioux hankies with. This should be a barn burner. While goaltending is important goal scoring looks to be the key (to me). I believe against UAA last weekend MSU gave up 5 pp goals (is that right?).

  16. Sorry to offend any gopher fans by posting the public service announcement regarding POI on this thread, which prior to my bump seemed to have died a natural death. NOT. :(

    1) I try to not start extra threads and I figured this thread was a natural place to put such news. 2) POI posters, generally speaking, don't go out of their way to avoid taking shots at UND/CB ..... but that's the fun of the boards whether it be this board, POI or USCHO --- grow a thicker skin. We/UND fans have a long way to go to reach the level of the DEs and Happys of the posting world. :( 3) Even though this was a thread calling POI a "not very nice name" I can say that I really hope they (Sal and pal) get their board up and running soon .... otherwise I'll have to read the SCSU husky board more and that is just plain wrong!!!! :)

  17. There were a couple rumors going around the various NHL and Calgary boards since Sutter took over in Calgary that he does not like having American's on the roster, and really doesn't like having American Collegiate players on the roster. Don't know if there is anything to that, just reporting what I've read recently.

Sutter seems a little harsh -- there's a quote in the Boston Globe under the section "two way street" http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/026/spor..._anymore+.shtml

Also (I realize that this thread is for WCHA alums, however this interview is a pretty funny read) Dan Patrick's interview with Marty Turco is downright amusing

http://espn.go.com/talent/danpatrick/s/200...5/1504343.html# (if that link doesn't work go to the thread for MT on uscho -- under the alumni board -- thanks to jen for posting it)

  18. Public service announcement: Many of you are readers of the POI website --- be careful accessing the site --- as it appears it is experiencing some technical difficulties --- the website has material of a "graphic" nature (as of tonight anyway) --- went over there to see the talk for the upcoming UMN-UMD series and didn't find what I was looking for --- does anyone know if there is a new address for POI?
