  1. He mentioned that in the league the standard seems to be 3 goalies on the squad. Having 4 goalies isn't "bad", it just is better for the goalies to rotate 3 during practice, more of a chance to face some action/pucks.

Ranfranz graduates after this year (03-04), Brandt next year. Next year (04-05) would likely have 4 scholarship goalies for UND; however, the following year (05-06) would be the "optimal" 3 goalie set -- 2 juniors and a sophomore, and barring any changes (06-07) would be those same 3.

  2. Matt Greene was on this afternoon (prior to practice) with Mike Mac. & Greg L. (the McLyte show Mondays on 1310). Only caught a little bit of the conversation. Bunch of joking back and forth for example: if MG wasn't to play hockey he'd maybe like to be a lumberjack or a rodeo star -- he was on a horse for the first time this summer. Question as to what type of season it'll be. Lots of players put in time on conditioning (weight lifting, track) -- players come to UND for one reason -- to win.

After MG left there was talk about ironman -- they thought Matt Jones won, with Tyler Palmoscino a close second? MG had made a comment early in the interview, to which a couple callers called in about -- I missed the comment, so I won't try to relay what MG stated --- maybe someone out there was listening too and can give their thoughts on it. The discussion with one caller focused on sportsmanship -- fighting. Greg L. (prior to coming to UND to play football, did play hockey in his younger years in Canada) and he talked about that MG's rough treatment of players in front of the net is needed -- that's a d-man's job, stay this side of a penalty, but don't allow someone to set up camp. Then a debate about the place for fighting in hockey. All in all, pretty entertaining stuff. They mentioned that they might try to get MG on again on a Monday show.

  3. There are solid arguments to be made for many coaches. I figure the reason Coach Sauer is at 16, was because there are many that could be named, he won the tie-breaker .......... the tie-breaker being that he has a regular column on insidecollegehockey.com ....... it wouldn't have been nice of InCH to leave him off the list .... :D

If we were going to give out popularity points -- well, here's one for Mike Sertich ---- he was/is always a fun interview to listen to ....

  4. An interesting debate could be on the best assembly of coach, associate coach(es) and assistant coaches -- 'cause as important as the head coach is, the assistant's are very important (for example: UND's 2001 runner-up finish -- CB was away for part of the season while his daughter was being treated, great job of stepping up by DH & BB).

    During title years there were

    1987

    head coach - Gino

assistants and/or associate - CB, Cary Eades & John Marks

    1982

    hc - Gino

    a - CB, Don Boyd

    2000

    hc - CB

a - Scott Sandelin, Lee Davidson, Jeff Bowen

  5. Thank You! It's pretty interesting to note the differences between the two sites.

    RPI has: Krach has:

    CC #20 CC #8

    MN #3 MN #2

    UND #25 UND #16

    MSU-M #17 MSU-M #10

St Cloud #2 St Cloud #5

    DU #12 DU #13

    UMD #29 UMD #19

    WI #14 WI #15

    UAA #19 UAA #20

    MT #10 MT #17

Regardless of which system is used the WCHA as a whole had a good showing. I'm surprised at the 12 spot differential for CC (20 vs. 8).

The other noteable SoS were 2 final four participants: Cornell #30/#26 and Michigan #27/#18.

  6. What do the boys need?

Two solid penalty kill units :

I think these numbers are right -- please feel free to correct 'em if need be.

    overall: pk% pm

    2002-2003 .784 764

    2001-2002 .794 598

    2000-2001 .854 686

    1999-2000 .847 707

    conference: pk% pm

    2002-2003 .775 467

    2001-2002 .783 439

    2000-2001 .846 465

    1999-2000 .865 478

(penalty minutes may be misleading as I don't know how many were offset by penalties to the opponent)

The penalty minutes aren't the problem -- they just really need to improve the penalty kill -- however, much of that may be due to the goalie situation.

    Tracking sh goals:

2002-2003 8 (only 2 of which were during conference play)

    2001-2002 4

    2000-2001 7

    1999-2000 5

8 of the 24 over the last 4 years (33%) were from Kevin S. & Jason N. -- I never really noticed, but does David L. play much on the pk? (just an aside: big brother Bryan L. notched 3 sh goals in 2000-2001)

  7. He had a really disappointing year last year. He needs to step up and provide some offense on that third line which he did not do last year.

It would be nice to see more offensive output from Ryan, especially because I believe he has the ability to score more. I disagree with the comment about his leadership..... He sat out his 2nd year with a hand/arm/shoulder injury (my memory is faulty), dealt with his mother's illness, dealt with his brother's illness, played defense when the coaches asked him to ..... from my view in the stands he appears to be a leader ....

    I'll go along with mksioux:

    Hale - C

    Lundbohm - A

    Parise - A

  8. I think that an act like KISS will have no problem selling out. Keep in mind that this concert will probably attract a great deal of Fargo people too.

I should have mentioned that Kiss was just in Fargo -- (as a point of reference: the Fleetwood Mac concert in GF had a crowd of 8100 in August this year -- most of my friends who saw them in Fargo (concert was in 1997) did not go to the GF because they had "already" seen them and Christie McVie wasn't touring with the band .....

  9. From the Herald:

    Nov. 7-8 - Minnesota;

Can't imagine the turn out at the concert will break 10,000 -- with the screwy scheduling the gophers weren't in town last year so I would think that most ticket holders are planning on attending both games and wouldn't necessarily flock to this concert...

    http://www.grandforks.com/mld/grandforks/6686678.htm

"Alerus Pursues Aerosmith/Kiss" Nov. 8th -- add in the fact that Aerosmith has played both Fargo and GF within the last 5 years -- Maybe I'm a pessimist, but I don't think that planning a concert in GF that night/weekend is a very good financial investment...... Someone in marketing/sales please enlighten me....

  10. Don't forget Drew Stafford, folks.

Hopefully, he'll help put the doledrums of the 3rd and 4th line to a quick end.

I'm probably being unrealistic, but I'm with OETKB -- I think Stafford(fr) will be on a line with Lundbohm(sr) & Massen(jr) (and not in the 3rd or 4th line)....

    Throwing out my guesses:

    Bochenski(jr) with Parise(so) & Murray(fr); Hale(sr) with Prpich(so) & McMahon(jr); Canady(jr) with Fylling(jr) and Palmo(sr) or Genoway(jr) .........

Sorry to go off on a tangent --

    final 5: UMN,UMD,Denver,UND,CC

  11. Maybe it's not "happiness", but the crowd singing the national anthem after Ralph died was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen or heard. The feeling was undescribable, and certainly unforgettable. For those who weren't there, I'm sorry I can't put the feeling in the arena that night into words. It will without question always be one of my best memories of Sioux hockey.

Ditto -- (was that the night the microphone for the singer didn't work and the crowd started singing louder than normal?)

In the early 80's watching a game on tv during a blizzard -- face off in the opponets end -- the group watching it chanting goal, goal, goal, goal and when the linesman dropped the puck UND won the face off and the d-man whistled in a goal -- totally awesome -- can't remember the player, opposing team, but just remember the group "willing" the goal.

David Hale's goal this past season at home vs. CC to tie the game ....

Providence .... April 2000 ..... being there ..... empty net goal ..... oh my goodness .....

At home ..... April 2001 ..... DB pulling the goalie twice .... Wes Dorey's goal to tie ..... scaring the kids because 4 adults were jumping up and down and shouting/yelling/high 5'ing .....

  12. Dean Blais was on with Mike Mc. this morning talking solely in regards to Coach Herb Brooks.

(One thing I noticed was that a couple times Herb was referred to in the present tense -- it really is hard to grasp that this larger than life character has indeed passed away.)

Interview started with a playing of the song "The Good Ole Hockey Game" and 3 audio clips of HB.

DB: The game has changed over the 20+ years removed from the 1980 Olympics. In 1980 DeanB was coaching in Minot -- when the final score was announced there was a pause of roughly 5 minutes while the crowd went wild -- standing "O" and the like. After the Olympics HerbB came to Minot and talked to the hockey community and then gave a substantial check to the Minot hockey recreation club.

DB: HerbB was a peer (ages 66 and 52 respectively). HerbB gave his friendship -- he had a great concern over the welfare of hockey ... DB took a whole lot from HerbB. He hated to lose -- if "we" lost it is "my/HerbB" fault, if "we" win credit goes to "you/players".

More talk about HerbB's Miracle on Ice: DB: The miracle of hockey -- get everyone on the same page (which HerbB accomplished). Russia was playing for a job, USA was playing for the/a moment.

In 1980 there were roughly 30,000 kids playing hockey ..... 2 to 3 years later there were 300,000 ...... (currently around 3 million).

He enjoyed hockey and was willing to go any where at any time to help develop -- expose -- the game. (Talk about a trip to Topeka with Gino to pump up the area with the addition of the Topeka USHL team -- anything he could do to promote this game.)

Final comment by Mike M: This is a huge loss to the WCHA family.

  13. "Kyle Radke, a highly recruited defenseman from Bashaw, Alta., has given a verbal commitment to play hockey at UND, beginning with the 2003-04 season.

I think I heard Tim and Swyg discussing this this morning -- and they said that Kyle Radke is not coming until 2004-2005 -- the Herald is incorrect. At least that's what I think I heard! :)

  14. Say what you like, but I'm happy he stayed a year. I'd like to see him play. Someone this highly regarded has to be fun to watch.

I'd be a lot happier if he'd be coming with his Wisconsin team to GF to play -- from the looks of the schedule the only way we'll see him in GF will be IF the teams meet in (with UND being the higher seed) the 1st round of the WCHA playoffs. Darn unbalanced schedule -- I really, really miss seeing the Badgers in GF every year.
