  1. I'm not here to pile on. I appreciate the talent of UND and respect them deeply. This year however, the Gophers are superior in many facets. Aside from top end talent on the first line where I agree it's a push, the Gophers have better 3rd and 4th line depth, better team defense, better special teams, and better goaltending. This year. Things change and I remember getting beat plenty of times by superior Sioux teams of the past. Plus, who knows how a single elimination context goes in the NCAAs. Honestly though, UND will need to pick it up from tonight's effort to ensure they make the NCAAs.

Prior to the game I don't think many of you thought Wilcox was legit. He is, obviously. Saunders was average, and the U is throwing a lot of pucks in the back of the net in the last few weeks against average goaltending. Additionally, I think we can put to rest the refereeing bias conspiracy theories. There were several light calls in both directions early on that no one was happy with.

Overall, it was a clean game that got out of hand. I expect a better team effort from UND tomorrow but I'd honestly be surprised if the U didn't end uf with 3 or 4 points on the weekend.

Gophers are peaking at just the right time. :)

Fair assessment, I think. UND is struggling right now, so they are ripe for a sweep at Mariucci. But, I also think they can solidify and be a strong team down the stretch, as they have done time and time again. Had UND got a few more lucky bounces tonight, would we be analyzing the death of their season right now?

Too much drama from the naysayers here. The boys are fine. Gophs are really clicking. And hockey is just getting into full swing.

  2. Let's be honest. Any goal scored against Boston College is a good goal. It could have been shot out of a Abrams M1 during intermission and I would still call it a goal. Weeks or even months after the game, a puck errantly dropped by Felix Baumgartner that manages to crash through the ceiling of any building in North American which happens to resemble a sports venue would still be counted a goal against BC by my rule book.

In fact, there have been no less than 7 additional goals scored against BC since I started typing this reply. And, I'm counting every damn one of them.

  3. IMHO they're beating a dead horse, and by 2014 that horse will be a pile of festering bones. If these "supporters" thought they had any chance two years from now, why not strike when the "iron is hot" and move for a vote this fall?

Oh wait, North Dakota voters aren't bright enough to understand the issue, which explains why so many voted against retaining the name in June ...:glare:

Indeed. The horse has been beaten so badly, all that remains is a liquified slurry with four recognizable hooves. Yet another vote would be like taking those hooves and processing them into glue, then forming a detailed model of a horse from this glue, then beating the hell out of the Glue Horse yet again until it too is no longer recognizable, but still emitting glue fumes available to sniff, hallucinate about magical horses, and then imagining beating them with a fairy wand.

  4. If you like Japanese hibachi, my kids love to go to Osaka. There's one in Eden Prairie and one in Bloomington, both off of 494. The teppanyaki chefs are entertaining, atmosphere is very relaxed, and the food is usually very good. Nothing fancy, very kid friendly. I hope you like Sake, 'cause they will squirt it in your mouth as a contest.

If you are having a birthday, they make you wear a silly mask and sing the most ridiculous version of the Happy Birthday song I've ever heard. You cannot get it out of your head, and it will most certainly lead to madness.

    Enjoy!

  5. That's right, we used to get a lot of burgers from Henry's, which was torn down to become Sambo's, which is not Gramma Butterwicks.

Couple of places I liked downtown... Golden Hour and Pancake House.

Sambos! I was a member of their birthday club. And I vaguely remember Phils and Lils, or "Filthy Lils", but not sure I ate there.

One of our family favorites was Shakey's with the player piano and the old silent moves, back when they were located in that strip mall. I'd watch those guys in the styrofoam skimmer hats roll dough and load it with pepperoni goodness.

    I miss Grand Forks.

  6. Burger Time definitely delivers. I don't remember Hamburger Heaven. But, and this is going back a ways, who remembers the "Auto Dine" on Gateway? I think there was a 25% chance of food poisoning and vomiting all over Dad's car on the way home. Good times.

taz also misses River Bend EGF

  7. McDonald's #2 OR buy one get one free Big Mac, Coke.

Red Pepper everything grinder, cheese tostadas, tacos, burritos. Coke.

REA taco in a bag, Coke. Dippin Dots.

    Whiteys Beer

Big Sioux Eggs and Hashbrowns, coffee.

All of the above can be ingested in just under 12hrs.

If Mrs Taz or the family insists, I'll take 'em to a fancy place like Italian Moon or Ground Round. You get free popcorn at Ground Round, which is pretty high end. Holiday Station has good beef jerky too.

  8. Please let it be Jerry York. He doesn't even need to coach; we just pay him to NOT coach. Anywhere. It's the NOT coaching part of the contract that I would be particularly interested in. I'm happy to contribute to said contract...

"Coaching Relationship: During the term of this Agreement ("Term"), Assistant Coach ("York") will provide absolutely NO coaching services (the “Services”) to this University or any other NCAA affiliated institution, collegiate athletic program, professional organization, youth association, or any other sporting entity as described on Exhibit A attached to this Agreement and incorporated herein by reference (the “Scope of Not Coaching”), as such Scope of Not Coaching may NOT be modified at any time by any addendum signed by either party or any other Person of Interest hereto. York shall use York's best efforts to NOT perform any Services such that the results are satisfactory to the University."

Followed by: "Term and Termination. York shall serve as an Assistant Coach to the University for a period commencing on the date hereof and terminating on April 9th, 2062; provided, however, the Coaching relationship shall terminate prior to such date if University successfully attains National Championship status in Men's Ice Hockey in no less than forty-eight (48) of forty-nine (49) attempts."

No charge for this legal counsel.

  9. "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair and "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck are both much better than Atlas Shrugged. Both books are inspired by what life was really like for most Americans before the reforms introduced during the New Deal. They both paint pretty stark pictures about the terrible abuses that took place when the wealthy of the country had free reign to exploit the working class without any interference from the government.

I've read Atlas Shrugged and really can't describe it as anything other than the selfish rantings of one truly selfish human being. I still find it amazing how conservatives have embraced Ayn Rand considering her views on religion and on gun control. The views she espouses throughout Atlas Shrugged are completely antithetical to those championed by Jesus Christ yet you'll hear many politicians on the right list both as being prominent influences on their ideology.

Textbook Unconstrained (Utopian) Vision. I would submit to you that centralized government, with unchecked growth, has no equal it its ability to inflict widespread economic disaster and human misery. No equal. That's why the bias should always be towards the free market and it's near infinite resource capacity and distributed knowledge. I suspect the support of Ayn Rand among conservatives or libertarians is largely with the economic stance as played out in Atlas Shrugged, with very little hoot given to matters theological. Only leftism would mandate such a singular groupthink.

  10. It's called a recession. More people are having hard times, and not making enough to pay income taxes. P.s. weird how in 2000 everything was going good(balanced budget, job growth), and then I believe some election happened that year. Fast forward to 2008 and the country explodes... What happened between 2000 and 2008. I can't put my finger on it. P.s.s I don't really have a strong political opinion. I think are problems are bigger than left and right. We need to quit screwing around with all this political arguing and solve problems. Dont let the big money-backed parties divide and conquer us.

Your call to stop arguing and solve problems is interesting. It begs the question, who should stop arguing, and who should solve problems? Then tell me, why those problems need a solution.

  11. GeauxSioux:

Just a note that "A Conflict of Visions" is not an easy read, so you have to stick with it. But, once you glean the concepts, it is invaluable in understanding others as well as your own basis for political and social thought. Sowell covers not just what people think, but more importantly why they think it. This is the book that won over celebrated Hollywood writer David Mamet; a tough blow to the liberal establishment.

    Good Luck!

  12. I always recommend the book "A Conflict of Visions" by Thomas Sowell. If you lean right, then immediately follow that book up with "The Vision of the Anointed." If you lean left, then go back and re-read the first book until you understand it.

  13. Tough loss, but what a great team. Fighting Sioux all the way. Last year, I was crushed; expectations were so high. This year, wow, what an achievement under such difficult circumstances. Congrats to the Gophers, they were on a mission today and played great. Tough to type that, but hey, it is what it is.

taz very proud of this years Sioux team!

  14. The bigger concern with the regionals this weekend is if Taz Boy wears his Fighting Sioux jersey and the ladies riot to get even a glimpse of the awesomeness. A lustful mob is not easy to contain.

As long as the players, coaches, and cheerleaders don't wear logo'd uniforms, they'll be fine. I don't see the NCAA reps on site going all Gestapo on UND if they make a reasonable effort to contain the logo. NCAA employees become more sensible as you branch out from the Executive Committee.

  15. I don't always agree with Rachel Blount, and she's never been a real fan of the Sioux moniker, but she seems to box the issue up pretty well.

    http://www.startribu.../139773373.html

Ha! Laughable Twin Citian elitist tripe, it's condescension and divisiveness further damaging to the retirement cause. I would think Rachel would be cheerleading the pro-nickname effort in hopes that UND's athletics are rendered impotent. It is the only way the Gophers can escape future beatings.

And, there will most certainly be beatings.

  16. Folks, I just can't get too excited about this new campaign idea. Overall, this is a defensive plan, desperate and reactionary.

There's also a meme being pushed that it's the pro-namer's fault and they're a bunch of slack-jawed idiots. Possibly some, but not the vast majority. Do not forget, this predicament was brought on by the NDSBoHE, UND admin, and ND political leadership. The fact that they now have to go into full emergency mode damage control is not something I can enthusiastically root on. Kinda like watching the medical team administer aggressive chemo after three years of misdiagnosis and inaction.

Flame Carlson all you want, but at least he resisted a little when the red rubber ball with the leather strap came out. And, by the way, that law is the people speaking through their representatives. And the signed petition, well that's the people speaking directly. The fact that what more than 2/3rds of the state wants is now damaging to UND is not the fault of those people. It is most certainly NOT the fault of Spirit Lake, who was crapped on by the Board two years ago, and they have every right to be p!ssed. I actually like seeing them still fighting; representing a never give up attitude which is what I always read about on this board.

So, sure, despite all that you can put me in the camp of wanting UND athletics to flourish in D-1. If it takes dropping the name, I'm for that too. But, most certainly you will NOT find me cheering on any political leadership who has been in the drivers seat for the past 5 years now sounding like they have all the answers if only the boneheaded public had a clue and went along with their completely and utterly hosed up plan. A plan which now includes the star studded campaign of current and former coaches, who must feel terrible that it's come to this.

What a colossal failure of unrivaled epicness.

  17. BTW, have you filed your TPS reports with the new coversheet yet?

"Aaaahhhhmmmmm, yyyyeeeeaaaahh. If you could just go ahead and do that from now on that would be grrrrrrreeeeaaat."

I didn't get the memo on those cover sheets. But, regardless, I tend to do the 15 pieces of flair for my reports.

  18. People like you make the rest of us look bad with all of your fancy, schmancy "productivity" ...

Ha! My original version had it at 3-4 hours. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. Cursed forum topics consuming my every waking moment. And, through no fault of my own, impacting my job. Why can't we pass legislation to protect me from this!
