Not sure that gender makes my Top Ten.

    1. Some years, due to weather/wetness, no home games until May.

    2. Home game weather often iffy (cold, wind).

    3. Too far from campus to draw casual students.

    4. Too many day games to draw casual adults.

    5. No marketing (unless you call the little two foot gameday sign on the ground at 17th & Columbia "marketing").

    6. Not hockey.

    7. Bizarre conference affiliations (NJIT?); too few quality (i.e., local/regional/traditional) rivalries.

    8. No marquee alums (that I can name).

    9. No recent winning tradition.

    10. It's baseball, a notoriously fickle fan sport, and one that too few area parents wanted to immerse their kids in as spectators (based on personal observation over the years).

It's an unprofitable sport in an area of the country where it is greatly affected by weather. The long term viability of the sport just doesn't make sense up here. I want us to cut the fat and let the athletic department properly compensate staff so we can be more competitive in hiring quality talent in the major sports.

Oh come on. Ive posted the attendance stats numerous times to rebutt this same statement you keep making. Just because you keep repeating it doesnt make it true.

    Avg attendance

    2012   18,516

    2011    18,143

    2010    15,944

    2009    16,515

    2008   18,032

    2007    18,141

    2006   16,377

Yep everything just fell apart  LOL

Fargo has always been a football town and NDSU has always drawn well. Grand Forks is and always will be a hockey town. I don't see why this is even a discussion as it is quite obvious.

There were realistically seven sports that could have been cut and all seven came close to meeting your criteria and that of not being a core Big Sky sport.

Another little tidbit I came across: a year or two ago either Irle took a scholarship away from baseball to give to women's soccer.  So baseball went from 6 scholarships to 5.  Soccer went to an astounding 14 (full).  :silly:

Personally that is crazy, although I have a soft spot for women's soccer. I was part of the crew that started tailgating at games in 2002. We had a group of 10 to 15 people to tailgate at games, even painted our chests for the last NDSU game in that snowy november. I will admit we did outnumber the fans usually though.

Women's hockey prolly has less revenue and spends 3 times more

I get that, but that is around because of title 9. It's my opinion that women's hockey in college wouldn't exist if title 9 weren't around. I Monday not even sure if we can get rid of it, maybe a title 9 expert here can help me out.

I did.  He chose the easiest one, the one he didn't have to fight for.  Got it now?

They are usually the easiest ones for a reason, because those are the ones that should go based off of revenue. They weren't part of the Big Sky, brought in very limited revenue, and had to travel a ton. Common sense states it should go.

Their budget was right around 500K.  Faison needs to cut five times that next year, per my sources.  What did he really accomplish?

On the surface, fine.  BB was always a tough deal cause of climate and facilities.  We all know that.

But, the way he did it by only cutting BB and Men's Golf was chickensh*t and basically kicking the can down the road.  He was presented with options and chose the easiest one, of course.  The problem is doing the easy thing doesn't always solve the issue.

Honestly, I am shocked that everyone cares so much about this. It was two sports 99% of the fan base never even came to support. We are in a colder climate, they don't add any revenue to the school because fans don't support them, and we so we did the obvious thing and cut them.

I feel terrible for the athletes and coaches that chose to come and represent UND but this was the right call. Personally, I would have ditched swimming and diving as well but I am not sure of the title 9 issue by cutting female athletes and where we stand with that right now.

We simply were sponsoring too many programs and this should have been done regardless of where we are at fiscally.

I am wondering how much of the so called retirement was actually our next ex presidents decision. Did he want to retire or was he told he needed to retire due to where he lead this college financially? Pure speculation on my part but the timing with everything and then bringing in a very respected ex governor to clean things up is all very interesting.

Working off what I said earlier in regards to keeping the recruiting class together, it appears Wisconsin has now offered a preferred walk-on opportunity to current UND defensive back commit Jordan Canady.

Would be another loss to pile on top of the recent losses of CB Jeremy Chinn and OT Elijah Grady. Need to try hold this class together.

Here's Canady's highlights; looks to have a lot of potential:

I wonder if there is any relation to former Sioux Hockey player Brian Canady?

So I ask, what the hell is point of throwing out random names if you have absolutely no information stating it's true?  Much like UND Roughrider did about Taylor, also.  What does anybody gain from that?

You have never speculated on rosters in sports before.....that just isn't true. I followed up my "calling him out" by stating it sucks because he could have been a starter at guard next fall.

  9. 51 minutes ago, UND-1 said:

So if he reports back for school, you will report back here that you were completely speculating and wrong?

I stated that I had no fact and it was pure speculation before I even made my statement. I didn't know him as a player, I didn't question the work ethics, or even the talent on the field. My statement was because he was a young player with no ties to the area, it was a perfectly logical thought process.

These guys are not doing this as charity, they are getting scholarships and now additional funds to cover expenses to play at a public university. They are at risk of losing scholarships annually and are in the public eye. I am not saying that anyone should start gossiping but if you preface your remark by stating it is speculation and you dont downgrade the person then who cares. It is no worse than commenting on how player had a bad game, after all you guys have no problem calling out a players poor performance and they all work hard.

Crap like this is the reason I no longer share inside info on here anymore, some of you are just ridiculous about it.

    End of rant....

Just going to go ahead and say it: I heard Demon Taylor is leaving. Not a huge loss, but hurts OL depth.

And I was the jerk for tossing out his name as a possibility because he wasn't from the area and was still young..... The kid had some real potential as a guard IMHO, certainly hurts from a depth perspective. Personally I thought he had a chance to start next year if he had a good off-season.

Ben is a QB all the way imo. I think if he was 6'4 200 lbs he is a scholarship kid but he is 5'11 180 lbs.  plenty of short QBs in college and the nfl that have had success so a low risk high reward deal for UND.

Good arm, smart and he can run. Only negative is his size. Glad we are giving him a D1 chance.

Also saw the Delbrune twins from Moorhead chose MSUM. Was hoping we could get them as PWO kids or partials.

Every time I saw  Ben play he always stuck out as the best player on the field. I am by no means an expert in breaking down players but that is never a bad thing.

No it isn't OK to continuously post the same "rumor".  We heard the "rumor" a few days ago.  All todays stuff did was piggyback that and essentially tell us nothing.  How many times can they keep saying nothing?

Just because you feel that way doesn't mean everyone else agrees with you. If enough people post the same rumor then there must be some sort of truth that goes along with it. It's reasons like these that I no longer post info when I hear about it, you just get your head torn off by people.

  13. Just now, UND1983 said:

Then why did you bring it up?

This is a discussion board where it is ok to post rumors and second hand information. I have no problem with them doing this as long as it is presented as that and not fact. I can't stand how some people attack posters on the board for bringing up info but not releasing names, they have every right to do this and we should be thankful they have shared what they have.

I have no inside info so this is purely guessing on my part but my guess is that they are younger players who were in a reserve role and not from the area as that is what most defections are. My guess is someone like Demon Taylor or Bryce Blair, someone with no ties to the school and not regional players.

Thank you to every poster who shares whatever inside info they have and are comfortable giving us, some of us appreciate it

  14. The biggest thing that I took out of this year is the growth of our QB and RB. Keaton grew up before our eyes the last 3 weeks, he was very accurate hitting the open man, was able to connect on the deep ball, and was able to limit the mistakes. I have been very hard on him the last year but the kid grew up in a big way. As for the running back situation, we have Brady and Santiago for 3 more years, enough said. We do have a few losses, but we have the depth now to where I feel comfortable replacing guys, next year can't come fast enough!

  15. Studsrud has broke long runs for scores or significant first downs during critical points in games. Could Studsrud play better? Absolutely. Could he play worse? Absolutely. Remember, Bubba's philosophy - considering the defensive focus - is that the only bad offensive play is a turnover. Studsrud has protected the ball relatively well by not throwing many interceptions. Relatively speaking, the other QBs on the roster were turnover machines compared to Studsrud. Studsrud needs to improve his accuracy, timing, and general decision-making, but I believe he will. He looks night and day compared to where he was a true freshmen, so why can't he improve from his true sophomore season to his junior season?

The other issue I have with your assessment of the QB play is it assumes everything else on the offense is set. That is, the offensive line, wide receivers, and running backs are all doing their job at a high level; however, that simply isn't true. Offensive linemen are occasionally holding or missing blocks, wide receivers aren't consistently getting separation, and the RB's run blind or timid at times. All in all, the offense needs to improve beyond just the QB position. Nevertheless, UND has ran the football extremely well in 3 of their 5 games, and they have won 4 of their 5 games. The improvement that the offense has shown from 2014 to 2015 is considerable, and as a result, I think the offense is on the right path. Still need to clean up mistakes though, particularly penalties and turnovers from bad decisions. Rudolph may need to make some better play-calling choices as well.

I will respectfully disagree,  but the fact we are debating these things at 4-1 is quite fun.

  16. The QB play is no worse than the O-line play as well as the WR play in my opinion. I don't think I'm a great football mind so please don't take me the wrong way. Of the 2 other Big Sky QBs we have seen, who would we rather want to have?

Today was a poor example, the part that bothers me is that we had better QB play on the D2 level. With greater success comes greater expectations.

  17. I bet you could throw a football over them mountains...

I paid almost $30k for my degree because I am unatheltic, Studsrud is getting a full ride because he has talent. This team can be so good but I am not a jerk because I am calling out a player. I can't be the only that can see that our QB is holding us back.

  18. While I don't believe Studsrud is the best quarterback on the team, I think he has done well with limited skills. Meaning I don't think he is the best passer, and it isn't even close, but he has definitely contributed nicely to the run game.

I do expect him to improve his passing game throughout the year. If he can't progress over the next few games, I have bigger concerns. We need to remember, he is young, and didn't have much experience from last year. He is very much a game manager type quarterback, and will probably never dominate the game, but his role is still important and he needs to step up when needed. He did have a few passes today, where I thought, "If he could only do that consistently!". That being said, even a competent passing game (just a mild threat) would open up our offense (and our run game) so much.

Regardless, we are 4-1 and coming home to Idaho St. Now I don't care who we are playing, we need to keep our foot on the gas and take care of business. Playoffs are a legitimate conversation right now, but only if we keep playing UND football. Great time, and fun to watch. Go Sioux!

I agree, it is nice to win and maybe i am just raising my expectations based on the performance of the team. I do think though that we do need to start worrying about this soon. We can't have QB that completes only 50% of his passes and expect to do anthing in the playoffs. It was pretty obvious today that PSU didn't live up to the ranking today. Studsrud is fine for today but he won't be good enough in 3 weeks.

  19. We won with defense last year as well.  Beat a NAU team ranked #22.  defense will win the games but last our offense losing games for us.  not so much with Studsrud with QB

How has Studsrud won for us? I'm not trying to be a jerk, but our QB play is holding us back. We had wide receivers open all day long and our QB couldn't go past the first read to see the play develop.
