  1. Took a look at that Mo State and Youngstown game, it looked like the Youngstown RB could've housed it 6 times, but didn't hit the hole fast enough or couldn't break an arm tackle. If Otis has even a halfway decent game, he has 3 touchdowns.

The corners do love playing up on the line, so we will need to pass the ball down the field a bit more than we have.

Besides that, keep their QB in the pocket and keep ours upright, I think we'll cover the spread on this one, win by more than a TD.

  2. Not sure how many subscribe to The Athletic here, but a really good writeup from a really good national publisher.

Spoiler Alert: Score prediction is 34-13 UND. That's probably a dream scenario for me. I think it will be much much closer.

Let's face it, whatever they pick someone will find offense to it.  Bonanza farms on Native American lands, or Theodore Roosevelt tied to Rough Riders and made disparaging remarks about Native Americans.  Maybe they should just name it "The Trophy" to point out how absurd things have gotten as far as sensitivity goes.

We do and I would say they have been playing a bit below the expected level going into the season. Also probably fair to say that because of the talent that is (expected to be) there, they are also leaving them out on an island and not bringing as much help over the top, so any mistakes are amplified.

The corners, I think, haven't been bad by any means. I think the safeties get caught too often on play action and are slow to recover and protect against the deep ball. It just seems like too often there is a wide receiver running free over the middle when the corners want to hand off coverage to the safeties but the safeties are out of position.

I agree. Miller needs to learn that ASAP or his season won’t last long. I think every QB needs that lesson as they move from HS to college and then again from college to NFL. Those hits are so much harder as you move up each level, can’t get away with trying to truck linebackers and safeties in college like you can as a stud HS quarterback.

We know Miller is more mobile, but I think the big question is how well does he do throwing? There's gotta be some reason Zeb won the job originally. IIRC, he had a very good back shoulder throw to Watson early on in the game. I think that's going to be the big thing. UND typically has done a good job with containing QBs, but if he starts picking apart the secondary, who has been the weakness so far of the defense, it'll be a long day.

Anyone else hear that it’s a broken wrist? That’s the rumor I’m hearing.

That's what I was thinking too when I saw the replay. Usually 6-8 weeks of recovery, I don't know if he wants to push it, but depending on how severe, he could be back in three weeks for the Frozen Four.

I finally had to watch the game delayed so it would be in sync with Jack Michaels and the radio broadcast.  It was painful to listen to.  No idea how a "broadcast school" would let that product out.

I saw those two students come up during the game intros and immediately turned on Jack Michaels and synced it up with the ESPN+ stream. I knew I wouldn't be able to get through the game listening to that the entire time.

I have to think that will be the case. Miller’s ability to move in the pocket and keep the defense honest with a QB run seems much more in line with NDSU’s past success at the position. Our OC seems comfortable leaning on a designed QB run when in “off schedule” down and distances so I would think Roehl likes Miller much better after seeing his ability this past weekend. As far as NDSUs o line not getting push, I agree, but also Illinois State always gives our o line trouble, they recruit absolute monsters to their d line.

Their 6’6” nose guard was a big problem, and they had some extremely athletic ends. I’d agree, I was impressed. If UND wants to do well, they need to

    a. Force pressure on the inside

    b. Stay home on the edges

This is conjecture, obviously, but I think this was a pretty vanilla game intentionally. The defense didn’t pressure all that often, we played a lot of off-coverage, and our offense was moving the ball well enough to not need to do much pre-snap. There wasn’t much in terms of trickerations, and it seemed almost like a preseason game. Hate week now, I think there will be a little more fire under their asses

I have more thoughts on this one too:

-time for Griebel to be replaced as a returner

-the screen game was definitely snuffed out

-defense didn’t get home quite as well in this one, need a better effort against a better OL next weekend

    -for God’s sake, ball security

-definitely not the same energy as when they’re playing at home in front of 3500

-All said, as long as Bubba keeps doing the Griddy, I’m happy

  10. I watched Bubba's press conference, and one of the factors was playing in front of a limited crowd, and needing to bring the energy. I think especially with a team UND should beat handily, it's important to have that energy from the opening kickoff and not let an inferior opponent hang around

I'm sure it's something that UND noticed they could take advantage of with USD's defense. A lot of them did really well too, i.e. Belquist's one he nearly took to the house. I was just surprised at the sheer amount of them. It was nice to see some of the big boys move down the field and crush some smaller DBs too.

On top of that, it gets the ball into playmaker's hands quicker and gives them much more space than just running slants or curl routes.

Isn't that a tactic to get the defense to defend the whole width and open up the running game between the tackles?

  13. Noticed a lot of screen passes when I was watching the game on Thursday, and I finally got a little downtime tonight, so I rewatched our offensive series. Presented without commentary:

16 of 24 completed passes were screens

    Bubble: 6

    Tunnel: 4

    Slip: 6

    Q1: 5

    Q2: 3

    Q3: 4

    Q4: 4

Not saying NDSU still isn't a good team, but name another team (other than possible UNI) that would be ranked this high after the thumping they took to SIU?

Whether we lose to them, or beat them. The W/L resumes are far different right now, which is what rankings should be based on.

It is a little ridiculous that anyone would put NDSU ahead of UND at this point.

Team 1: 3-0, wins over three Top 25 teams, beat each team by 10+ points

Team 2: 3-1, wins over bottom of the barrel MVFC teams, got spanked by a team which Team 1 beat by 22.

Obviously there's historical factors going into it, but anyone voting by a blind resume alone wouldn't put NDSU above UND.
