I was in attendance at Halenbeck Hall on Saturday night, and I must say that I loved that place!!! The view seemed to be good from most places, the size was about right, and most of all, it just seemed like a classic basketball venue. It kind of reminded me of a cross between frost arena and the old hyslop. The place was far from modern, as the lighting and PA seemed ancient, but all in all I was in love with the place by the time I left. I've come to the conclusion that us Sioux fans are beyond spoiled. I cannot figure out how we can complain about the Betty. Maybe it's not perfect, but it's not as if we really spent a lot of state and university money to build it (if I remember it was built with REA profits). The arena was designed for practice first, games second, but the sightlines are great and the atmosphere has the potential to be amazing. I for one hope that I have to wait in line for 30 minutes to get in on thursday, as I would love to see a standing room only crowd. We have some of the best facilities in the country for a school of our size, but most people just seem to complain about them. Maybe there are some things we can do to improve the Betty, but I'd rather see some money spent on the track/soccer and baseball facilities first. Us Sioux fans should be thankful that we have such amazing venues.

You know, in principle I agree with what you just said, but in practice, I don't think it will be possible for her to make her teammates better. She could give most of those girls beautiful feeds for layups, but most often they either don't catch the ball, or else they blow the shot. I feel sorry for all the VC girls on that team, but you can only make your teammates so much better. I agree that she is a gritty defender and good ball handler, but don't sell her offensive abilities short. She's got a good shot from the outside, and is an excellent penetrator for her height.

North Dakota Pride...I have some problems with a statement that several non-students have made here on this board. You say that North Dakota taxpayers keep UND in business and not the students. Well in the last legislative session, $309,158,467 was earmarked towards our university. That may seem like a lot, but if it was spread out over 2/3 of North Dakota's population, it comes out to exactly $772.90 per tax payer (assuming only 2/3 of ND's citizens pay taxes). That is a whole lot less than the $20,000 a UND student pays for two years of tuition (ND is on a biennial budget cycle). I agree that students should not have a total free reign on what goes on at games, but I believe that students should have the biggest say in these matters. Alumni might give a lot to the University now, but who is going to be giving large sums of money in the future. The answer to that is current and future students. I do agree with you on the immaturity of students. I would hope that my fellow students would choose to conduct themselves with some class like most do in class and other public settings. However, I feel that students should be allowed to stand, and I find it very unfortunate that the non-students contribute so little to the atmosphere at the Ralph. Maybe if we moved back to a less comfortable venue (the old REA) people would remember that they were at a sporting event and not at some formal event.

Being from VC and watching that team play I can tell you that Coach Dockter down there is not in a good situation. That program making state last year was a once in a lifetime thing. I don't think that either the boys or the girls teams in VC will win a game this year. But the girls are especially bad. Jossy only shoots so poorly because there is NOBODY on that team that can score, let alone even dribble a basketball. After she graduates, they may have to drop to a jv level program just to work back up to being competitive. I really feel sorry for Jossy right now, as she has to work 5 times harder than anyone on the court just to keep her team in the game. When she is surrounded by talent, you won't even recognize her as far as ability goes. I'm sure she'll be able to come in and play the same role next year that Mahlum did as a freshman.

41-17 UND at the half...It sounds like we are well on our way to win #19. Both Langen and Kimbrough have 2 fouls, but our depth is covering that as Sannes and Ledger played solidly, as well as Boese lighting it up.

From what I know of Jossy, she is a winner. She is fiercely competitive and will fit in well with the program. Look for her to have a successful UND career.

I may not be for sure on this one...but don't children of University employees go to school for free? I know they do at many schools in ND, and I don't think it's any different at UND. Maybe she's getting like a minimum meal plan or something like that. I figured that Cierra would play for UND, but I didn't think she'd get any $$ to do so. She'll might prove me wrong, but I don't think she's nearly as good as anyone else that we brought in this year.

Another thing to consider about NDSU's championship teams...They won all of their titles at least 10 years ago. I think that women's basketball has come a long way even since the mid-1990's. You don't see teams such as Mankato and USD and UNO playing as bad of basketball as you once did. Also, I would venture to hypothesize that there are more talented young women playing basketball now than back in the mid-1990's. I'm not trying to say that Kasey Morlock was a weak ball player (she was damn good, and you couldn't hate her no matter how hard you tried), but the top teams in the conference aren't getting all the top recruits, and since more good athletes are going to teams that historically aren't as strong, you are seeing more depth.

I really hope that the fan support is great for the women this weekend. I hope people come for both hockey and basketball, and if it's a close game I will be very disappointed if I see 500 people get up and leave to go to hockey!!! That being said, I'm a little nervous for Ft. Hays. Their leading scorer is 6'1" she shoots about 60% from the field, and is also their leading rebounder (as a soph.). After that, they don't have much height to speak of. I'm sure we can expect a similar style of game that we saw from USD, but the question will be whether they can draw something up to stop Langen...or whether Langen can stay out of foul trouble if they go to a 5-out offense with the center bringin the ball up the court. Good luck to the Sioux women (and hockey team) this weekend. Hopefully both can move on!!!

I agree UND92,96...I also would be disappointed if we don't win by 20 with homecourt and the roll we've been on lately. The thing is that Fort Hays really has nothing to lose, being the #8 seed. I've been on that side before back when I played basketball, it's a lot of fun to play giant killer. UND has to come out and bury them right away. You'll see me in my Sioux Crew shirt by where the band sits...if it's inside of a 10 point game at half I won't be in a good mood. It's March Madness, anything can happen, and if we don't crush them early in the game, that'll give Fort Hays the confidence they need (they'll forget about being 5-5). It would be nice if we could win both games comfortably so that Langen, Hausauer, Boese, and others can get some rest so we can have really fresh legs for a Monday title game. Also, if we can win the first two comfortably, that'll get Val Sannes some more time. She's come a hell of a long way since high school, and I think she'll play a key role if UND is going to go anywhere in the National Tournament. She has some weaknesses on offense (like bringing the ball down), but she eats up a lot of minutes, and is much more effective than Glynn. It should be an interesting first round, I'm definitely gonna go over to catch at least the MSU-M-St. Cloud game. I just can't see MSU-M winning that one, but St. Cloud historically does not play well in regional tournaments, so we'll see what happens I guess.

That's what we all thought when UND played Fort Lewis last year in the first round in St. Paul. Final score...UND 56 Ft. Lewis 54. They gave us all we could handle and then some. I know nothing of Ft. Lewis, and so I'm not gonna make any big predictions like a 30 point win. I just hope we can survive till at least the title game. This UND team, however well they are playing are still very young, and I just hope that they don't come in overconfident, or they WILL be beaten!!!

I think this year has been by far his best coaching year. I think many of us figured this would be a rebuilding year, with only one senior. While the team showed their youth early (on the road and at home against Northern), they are playing very well now. I can see it's tough some times, and he's showing more emotion than ever. What they'll do in the future, with this dynamic recruiting class coming in could be scary!!!

What a great game by the UND women tonight!!! They proved a lot tonight by being able to win two very different games this weekend. USD posed a heckuva matchup problem by goin with the 5-out offense, and basically this took Langen out of the game. For Hausauer and Boese to step up the way they did tonight was just amazing. Chelsey had to have had 15 boards to go with her 30 pts, and Boese did a heck of a job in the paint 2nd half. I also have to commend Mahlum and Beck and Maffin. They hit some big shots and played great defense off the bench. This team showed me that they could be a force in the tourney, by being able to play more than one style (and Gene showed he still has a little mobility left in him!!!). Say what you want about him, coach Roebuck won that game for the team tonight with his emotion and intensity. Should be a fun regional next weekend!!! Look out for the Sioux!!!

fs1, you sure are a little harsh on the man. He really does love UND, and despite his lack of success, he has worked hard for the University, and he is definitely an asset to our school. I think that he could do a nice job as a fundraiser for the athletic dept. based on his personality. Like him or not as a coach, he is a nice guy, and he's a good guy. Also, reassigning him shows people outside of our University that it is not all about winning and losing. You cannot deny that a player learns more than just basketball while at a University, and I think that Glas has done a great job in building character in young men. But with that, it's time for me to go over and cheer on the Sioux Women to a victory, more on this later!!!

I don't know about that. That would be the easy way out of hiring a coach. He may be a recruiting genious, but how well have those recruits done? I think it would be better for the University to hire a totally new staff to breathe some new life into a program that has underachieved for years.

I agree with you UND92,96 that Rico's record at Wayne is a little bit shaky, however I don't think that coaching at WSC is a very hospitible job. For one, they don't have the max allotment of scholarships, and another they don't have the facilities to help recruit players to WSC. It would be interesting to see what he could do with a program like UND. Another thing I don't know about is coaches in the area that are really successful and would be willing to come to UND.

Maybe I am bringing this up too early, but if Rich is indeed let go or reassigned, who do you guys think may be his replacement? I will throw in my 2 cents worth of who could be considered... 1) Rico Burkett: He is the head coach at Wayne State College in Nebraska. The former UND pg was a very popular player, and I saw him coach in person and he is very intense and very professional. 2) Mike Fitzner: Also a former Sioux (although he didn't finish his career here), he is currently the head coach of Lake Superior State University. He's been there two years, and has helped to improve a program that was at the bottom for a long time. He is also very intense and professional, and he has a good knowledge of the game. 3) Mike Boschee: One of UND's best shooters, his knowledge of basketball is unprecedented (he molded his brother pretty well). He is currently the head coach at D3 Central College in Pella, Iowa. He's been around the game all his life, and he is also in the process of building a program at Central. He would be a good choice in my opinion, although maybe a little risky. I know that UND has a strong tradition of loyalty in hiring coaches. These are three former Sioux that would probably jump at the chance to come back. However it also wouldn't surprise me if we hire someone from outside to breathe some new life into the program. It should be an interesting couple of months in the MBB off season.

I wouldn't go so far as saying calling out recruiting mistakes... A coach cannot help for injuries...and Guinn and Sannes both had very good high school careers. Also, a coach cannot do much about a player suffering a knee injury, and then deciding to move in with her boyfriend...those things just happen and it is unfortunate that so many of these problems have occured this year As far as the team and tonight's game with the Wolves...UND played like a young team for the entire game...While Langen has been a nice presence in the middle...she missed a lot of key shots throughout the game (especially the 1st half). Also, you have to give credit to Northern...Their coach is on the same tier as coach Roebuck, and he made the adjustments needed to shut UND's offense down in the 2nd half. Couple that coaching expertise with some excellent shooters and a good defensive effort, and you have the key ingredients to coming from behind on a team that thinks they have you beat. The Sioux can only get better from this experience...the players are young, and they will learn over time that you have to go for the jugular, and knock teams out when you have them down...They will mature, and with the inside presence they posess, they will be a force to reckon with down the road this year.

Speaking of Dressler... I heard a rumor that he could play in 20% of the games and still be able to keep his redshirt, because he has an injury and they are seeing if he can play through it or whether he should redshirt...I don't know if this is true or not, but I would believe that if he can play, he will...Great performance by Belmore and company!!!

So bisonguy, how do you explain the two "free" tickets that Titan machinery gave me a week ago (even though I told them I was a UND student and would not be going to the game). You guys must be tryin really hard for a sellout!!!

Interesting article on the nickel In-forum Why can't the bison (who are supposedlyoff to bigger and better things ) just realize that they lost the Nickel for good on Oct. 18, 2003? The trophy was meant to be given to the winner of each year's football game, and because the two schools are no longer going to play (and its NOT UND's fault!!!) the trophy should be put to rest on the campus of the University of North Dakota. I like the idea of upping the level of exposure for the Nickel Drive, but giving the winner of the drive the Nickel would be comparable to giving Victory Bell to the winner of the USC-UCLA debate contest or the Black Diamond Trophy to the winner of the Maryland-West Virginia cricket contest!!! Since the game is over, the trophy should stay in Grand Forks...unless NDSU wants to come back to D2 or we go D1-AA in the future (which could happen). But it probably won't happen either way, being that we are supposedly "just some NAIA school who plays St. Johns and once in awhile has a good hockey team." Bison fools...you might as well start collecting the "bison chips" now...it might be the only thing you have to keep your fire goin for a long time!!!
