Officially complaining about the Irish is a key move

The NCAA will never take on the Fighting Irish and their money and power. I have to believe there is a way of making a complaint against the Fighting Irish name and mascot that the NCAA can't ignore, forcing them to look for a way out on the entire issue. Any lawyers here?

The ONLY thing we have in common with the Fighting Irish is "Fighting"!. The last thing I think we should do is take the angle of "well what about them" mentality. Notre Dame will have its day later on, but I think we need to focus all of our efforts for UND and UND ONLY!!! None of the others on the NC$$'s list seem to see the need for an alliance with each other and I think the Irish would be an embarassing choice based on the "Fighting" commonality. I am yet to be convinced (and I expect the NC$$ is of the same opinion) that the Irish are not yet considered an official minority. And, Yes, I understand that there is no official list. I certainly respect your view on this, but I do not think it can help the Fighting Sioux case.

it has nothing to do with a minority, is has to do with a race or group of people.

I agree, try to point out just how silly that all would be if the NCAA said that you couldn't use the name of any peoples, not just the Native Americans. That would mean teams like the Irish, Vikings, Colonials, Patroits, Lumberjacks, Quakers, Crucaders, Knights, Cavalears, and Lakers. Think Myles will have a fun time explaining how those are different because they're white?? Everybody would then go off and get animal names, then PETA rears its ugly head.......

Not that PETA, de other PETA, you know, the ones that only eat organically grown veggies and tofu.:D;)

If God didn't want us to eat animals, then why the hell did he make them so gosh darn tasty, especially when smothered in sauce and cooked over flames?? ;)

The problem is that the NCAA should have no right to tell a state run school whawt they can or cannot be named. I want to know more then anything, why are North Dakota's Senators and Congressman not throwing a fit and challenging the NCAA to change this. Bring a formal complaint against them on the record and in a public forum like congress. They need to state that the NCAA is over stepping their authority and that UND can benamed what ever they want to be named. I want to hear Dorgan, Conrad(I forget the other guys names.) speak up and speak loudly.

Just a thought, can not wait till thrusday.

Its tough for someone like Conrad, Dorgan, and Pomeroy, who all end up taking alot of Casino Money from the tribes, to formally speak out against them in the US Congress. They are politicians and thus they gave their concerns about the name in the newspapers, but little else...Maybe we should start a letter writing campaign to the congressional delegation from ND to support the name and start to question the NCAAs internal financial practices in general.

I hate to throw cold water on this discussion, but all these points have been covered before in previous threads on this forum. The NCAA will rule on UND's final appeal on April 27. All we can do at this point is wait to see what the NCAA says, see what UND's response is and then go from there.

Right now, the best thing UND has going for it is the Fighting Sioux hockey team's appearance in the Frozen Four. Our players will once again be on national TV wearing their "hostile and abusive" jerseys. That wasn't supposed to happen.

Having Sioux references displayed at the Ralph during the NCAA West Regionals wasn't supposed to happen. Having an NCAA basketball tournament at the Betty wasn't supposed to happen. Having UND's basketball, football, soccer and cross country teams wear uniforms during the NCAA playoffs containing Sioux references wasn't supposed to happen.

Every time UND has pushed back on this issue, the NCAA has retreated. What happens on April 27th should be quite interesting.
