BinaIsGod Posted November 4, 2004 Share Posted November 4, 2004 Let me try to put it in a way that might be easier to understand... I have two kids in the Fargo All-City youth hockey program. I have a Mite and a Termite. Those kids in those programs are taught that fighting is bad. At what point does it become acceptable? Where is it not okay one year but all of a sudden the next year it becomes "part of the game"? No matter how far their hockey careers go, I will never under any circumstances tell my sons that it's acceptable to instigate a fight. To come to the defense of a teammate is one thing, but to single out a player on the other team and take your frustrations out on him because his team is beating your team... and rationalize it as trying to "fire up your team"? I'm sorry, but I find that disgusting. I'm gonna have to tell you that fighting becomes a big part of hockey when the kids get to junior hockey. Fighting is allowed in the USHL, NAHL, and all of the leagues in canada. In fact, fighting is sometimes encouraged to show leadership on those teams. I never even learned how to skate. I played a lot of floor hockey as a kid, but nothing beyond that. I don't see how the answer to that question one way or the other is relevant to what I wish to see as a spectator. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> There is no way a 20 year old will back down after he gets his face rubbed out from his mask and the jaw jacking. Also the refs are wise enough to not get involved till after the fight settles down. I am sure the refs don't enjoy being on the receiving end of a haymaker. When I think of hockey players who displayed great leadership I think of guys like Lemiuex and Gretzky, not Domi and McSorely. I realize fighting is allowed and sometimes encouraged in junior hockey, but I think that's disgusting. I took my kids to an FM Jets game last year and a fight broke out right in front of where we were sitting. I was not impressed. Seeing two guys beat the living snot out of each other is not my idea of family entertainment. If I wanted to see that I'd go hang out at some dive bar and wait for a couple of drunken fools to "take it outside". <{POST_SNAPBACK}> If you think that Gretzky and Lemieux never got into any fights, then you are sorely mistaken... Hanson was going to break up the fight between McMahon and Vanelli, but then decided to back off when he realized he was the only ref there because Freeman was escorting someone else to the bench and Anderson was busy writing down penalties. The ref doesn't need to accidently receive a punch, and he can't break up a fight on his own or one of the players will get the advantage and sucker punch the other, just like what happened to Ryan Hale last year in Michigan Tech. I have an old friend who served as a linesman in the WCHA for a few years. His personal philosophy was that for the meager salary he was making per game he wasn't going to jump in alone and stop a fight for fear of getting hit with a punch or ending up injured. dagies Posted November 5, 2004 Share Posted November 5, 2004 Hockey needs more Wayne Gretzkys and less Tie Domis. I have to be honest and say I enjoy watching a hockey fight as much as the next guy. However, I wish they'd remove it as a factor in the game. The above is why. It's a great game if you take out the thugs. It's their only job. To fight. Put real players out there and let them play. If they "go" once in a while ala McMahon/Vannelli, I can handle it. But don't just bring guys in because they can "throw 'em". What a waste of a Jeff Panzer is that? Old Barn Guy Posted November 5, 2004 Share Posted November 5, 2004 This is a topic where having played the game will probably make a difference in the way you feel about the topic of fighting. I don't condone the fighting, but have to admit that I have been in a few hockey fights in my younger days. I have to say that none of them were pre-planned to fire up my teammates, although it may have had that result. The fights I was in were either spur of the moment reactions to a player (or the team) I was playing that particular day, or were the "last straw" to some unwanted attention I was receiving from an opponent throughout a game. I might add something to this discussion about fights. At least in hockey, the people involved in fights get some sort of consequence. I've seen quite a few NFL games where, after altercations have taken place between teams/players, the referee will signal off-setting penalties and then place the ball on the spot to begin the next play (just like nothing ever happened). I get revved up when there are a few scuffles, and even a fight here and there! Do I think that everyone should be able to fight at will? No! But a few fights here and there are bound to happen.....and for someone to be all upset over it? Come on......Hockey is a fast moving, hard hitting game.....a fight on occasion shouldn't spoil the experience of being at a game! If a team is losing badly, and the only reason they fight is to be a poor sport....probly not a good idea. However, sometimes a fight (warranted) will get a team's spirits up! Let's see......Mike Commodor vs. the Wisconsin Badger, David Hale vs. Mankato......I'm sure there are more.......they inspired the team, and I believe ended up either winning, or sparking the teams after playing flat! I think back to the days when the smaller Sioux goalies would consistantly get "run" by other team "cheap shots"! To me, now there's a time where a player should be allowed to kick the crap out of the other team's player who consistently is a cheap shot, running goalies, etc! Based on the "fighting makes the game clean" theory... in a football game a defensive lineman should provoke a fight with an offensive lineman to "keep the game clean" when the offensive lineman leg-whips somebody in the knee??? The two guys could take their helmets off a have a little boxing match on the 50 yard-line. No, two wrongs never make anything right. It's up to the refs to officiate the game and penalize players for cheap hits and high sticks. The vigilante take-the-law-into-your-own-hands rationalization is lame. If somebody gets two minutes for a cheap high stick and does it again he's going to get another two minutes, and another two, and another two, and so on... There's no need to instigate a fight. Just gladly go on the power-play all game long if the high sticks continue. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That is not the way it works, The Enforcer will step in and stop it alot quicker than the ref will. And also, no fighting would lead to more injuries, and more career threatening injuries. If the enforcers weren't there to protect the skilled players...the skillled players wouldn't be playing hockey for very long...trust me...
