"An NCAA study completed in 2002 revealed the average Division I-AA school lost $3.4 million in 2001. Between 1999 and 2001, average revenues rose 6.3 percent while average expenses climbed by 25.9 percent. That hard fact hit one of the premier programs in Division I-AA this year: the University of Montana. The program that routinely draws full houses in its 24,000-seat Washington-Grizzly football stadium dug itself a near $1 million deficit. Two years ago, rival Montana State was nearly $1 million in the red. It ended 2002-03 with a $470,000 deficit, according to a university official."
