Drew Stafford

From the comments I read in the ROTY thread, sounds like he has been an inconsistent freshman. That's not unusual. I just read a quote about Stafford in THN, Stafford is "fried a bit from the whole thing (WJC). He's just starting to come around" said Dean Blais. You guys know your teams situation, what do you think Dean means? Also, I saw the scouting rag Red Line report has Stafford rated #7 for the upcoming NHL draft. Obviously, he's rated so high because of the potential people see in him. But if I'm reading right, some of you guys think he's the fourth best rookie on your team? Also, looking at collegehockeystats.com, they show Stafford all over the place. Playing with Parise and Brandon earlier in the year and playing some fourth line duty lately. Has he had trouble finding his spot (ie- the freshman inconsistency)? Thanks for any Stafford talk.

He started out the year red-hot and has cooled a little since the WJC. I think it's typical for a true freshman to get a little burned out down the stretch, especially when you throw in an emotionally and physically draining tournament half-way around the world right in the middle of the season. (On the other hand, it seems Brady Murray started out a little slow, but has come on strong lately...perhaps being the best player on the team right now.)

Stafford obviously has a lot of potential. He has good size, good hands, decent skating. He shows flashes of being dominant. I think he would have to opt-in to be draft eligible this year. Us Sioux fans are hoping he does't opt-in. From my biased opinion, Stafford could use about 2 more years in college.

I wouldn't read too much into Blais switching him around on lines. Blais does that to everyone. He was on the 4th line last night, but could be on the 1st line tonight.

Drew is an awesome player, and he has already accomplished a lot his freshmen year. I agree that he has lots of potential. I say give him some time and he'll fall back into place.

Like I said give him some time and he'll find his place. And look he found it while in Mankato. Yeah i'd have to agree four points isn't too bad of a start.I'd say he had a pretty awesome night. I for see him doing well next weekend too.

Stafford is only 18 plus a few months, right?

To be drafted this summer, wouldn't he have to opt in and thus lose his collegiate eligibility (like the BU goalie DiPietro (sp) a few years back)? EDIT: Yup, he would.

Given the NHL CBA situation, I'm not sure that opting in right now would be a wise move. I hope he waits (but that's me being greedy). He's big and talented. He'll be a high draft pick if he opts in or if he waits for 2005. Plus, it sounds like he'd be OK on the free agent market too.

I would be willing to bet some beer that Drew will be back next season.

If he is planning anything else I would have some of his fellow SSM buddies working him over and telling him about the chances of winning an NCAA tourney next season.
