star2city Posted April 1, 2011 Share Posted April 1, 2011 Fox Houston: NCAA Certifies Houston Baptist athletics HOUSTON - Houston Baptist University has taken a giant step forward in its efforts to become a full-fledged member of Division 1 of the NCAA. The NCAA notified HBU it had certified the school's athletics program, which is critical to the school's efforts for membership. Certification comes after a two-year long process which all member schools are required to go through every ten years. "It's probably the centerpiece of the NCAA's approval process," said Dr. Robert Sloan, president of HBU, in an interview with FOX 26 Sports. "It essentially means if you were a banker, you've gone through your major audit." HBU originally applied for membership in 2007, but was told two months later by the NCAA the process would take seven years instead of three. HBU filed a pair of lawsuits against the NCAA to reduce the wait and the two sides settled on a four-year plan. HBU sues the NCAA and wins, and yet still doesn't get messed with in it's transition. The NCAA has since changed its rules so that a former NAIA school like Houston Baptist must go through DII membership prior to DI membership. HBU wanted a three year transition, the NCAA said seven. They agreed on four years. Understand your point, but in all actuality HBU won and the NCAA lost on it's point. If HBU had been stuck with seven years, they would have stayed NAIA. Settlements are not all equal - and in this case HBU go the much better hand. HBU is also a low budget school athletically that can't afford any extras beyond the very basic NCAA DI requirements, much like Presbyterian. If the NCAA can't stick it to HBU as part of the transition in retribution, I highly doubt they will to UND either. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
