  1. if RR, I like the idea of Teddy-less logos.   Not that I have anything against Teddy, but I prefer that this evoke the image of a roughrider in general, rather than 1 man.  Someone else said it and I agree, Teddy-like logos look cartoonish.  I think more general associations lead to better logo opportunities

The marketing "experts" have known Teddy was a bad idea all along.  This is why they safeguarded against it with the generic spelling.

  2. i don't need a link...let's put it this way...for every chevy, gmc, or ford pickup you see in north dakota count that as a person that would buy roughrider gear....for every prius or range rover count that as a sundog gear....a good safe nostalgic chevy impala would be nodak gear...a good mpg car for students like a ford focus or honda civic would be  fighting hawk gear....and a nice fancy upscale bloomington, minnesota car like a porshe would be north star gear....

i would say there are more pickups in nd than the others combined...there you go.

That there is one impressive heap of stereotyping.

  3.

As I've said here, and other places, I'm perfectly fine having Roughriders as the name, even though I didn't vote that way.  I don't consider TR a racist, because I do put him in the context of his times.

But I am curious about the big TR and Roughriders fans on this board.  People do realize, don't they, that there is the thinnest of thin connections (if not none at all) between TR (and more importantly, the Roughriders) and UND?

Nodaks is not an ideal name, but at least it was the original name of our teams, so there is that connection.  TR vacationed here.  He was never here for more than about a month, and the total time he actually spent in the state was less than one year.  He had a hunting camp here.  At the same time he still lived in NY, ran for office and campaigned in NY, raised his family in NY.  The Roosevelt family has no connection to UND, as far as I can tell.

The Roughriders were formed years after TR stopped vacationing in ND, and was formed by soldiers from the southwest, and TR's Ivy League buddies out east.  I don't think they ever set foot in this state.

It would be like if George H.W. Bush  vacationed in Maine (which he did), opened a fishing business while he was there which then failed in less than a year, causing him to return to Texas forever, and the University of Maine decides to name it's hockey team after George's military regiment.  Um, ok I guess.

I've always been fascinated by the way the state of North Dakota has latched onto TR.  I understand it.  It's not like we're Ohio or Virginia or New York or some other state where numerous Presidents have been born, raised and entered politics.

But TR hunted deer and elk here, then muttered one very memorable phrase saying nice things about us, and we've suddenly adopted him as our native son, and now want to name our flagship University after his military regiment.

Again, Roughriders is a fine name, and I have no problem if that's what is chosen.  But I just find the connection (or really, lack thereof) kind of funny.

Very well done.  But of all the great points you make, I have yet to see a single one of them change an opinion on this board.

  4. like i said i'm getting priming myself for when my ndac friends ask "how are your nodiks doing these days"....just getting ready in case....

One minute you are brimming with confidence that RR will win.  Now you claim to be preparing to lose?

  5. I disagree...I think the student vote is so small versus the alumni vote...the same 2000 students that go to games will care...will they vote?  maybe half...almost all alumni I have talked to have registered to vote and 2-1 say RR v nodiks

First they scare you with the possibility that "nodiks" will be used by rivals.  Then they go ahead and use it themselves.

  6. I would be really interested to know how many official votes were made yesterday, compared to how many will trickle in over the rest of the week. I would think most people would have already voted.

The clever voters are those still saving their votes.

  7. Really starting to seem like Nodaks is primed to spoil a couple election night celebrations.  (The RR party has been pre-planned for months now.)  I think all the UND insiders pushing Sundogs through this long process may have committed one fatal flaw.  After successfully striking down the no-nickname option they left too much time for supporters of that option to regroup (as Nodak supporters.)

  8. Nodaks is not going to win. I will say it right now....it will not finish in the top two. The top two will be Roughriders (which is a popular choice despite all the brazen attempts to slander it) and Fighting Hawks (because of the "Fighting", not because of the "Hawks"). And I could live with either of those.

    I am voting Roughriders....the Climax-Fisher Rule notwithstanding.

You think Roughriders has been slandered a lot compared to what now?

  9. You didn't like the first response? How about ...

It is a new beginning to a new timeline that history says will have a changing logo. So focus on the nickname, not the (sure to change) logo, to start things off.

In fact i don't like the second response either. Does "history" tell you we will never change the nickname?  Kind of obvious given our current situation.

  10. You didn't like the first response? How about ...

    And you DID?

  11. How many different logos were used with the old nickname? Right away I come up with Ben Brien's, the geometric, the blackhawk, "Sammy", ...

Art, visual styles, change with eras.

The nickname is what ties the timeline together. That's why I think voting on names without logos does make sense.

This will be a new beginning.  You have to let time pass before there can be a timeline.
