Maintain the trademark, so no one else can own it.  Maintaining it means using it a minimal amount, which is what these limited releases of clothing are about.

We've been talking about this for years - this thread was started in 2013 - so this really shouldn't be news to anyone.

Would love to know the exact definition of "maintain" here, in legal terms, including reference to "required sales."

The assumption that UND is stocking and selling Fighting Sioux merch simply as a requirement is laughable.

I agree fully.   Stuff like this just prolongs the day that we eventually move on and finally unite.   As long as a few stubbornly cling to the Sioux name we will be stuck in the past.    It was voted on, and voted on way too often, so let's embrace the Hawk and just worry about winning championships.   A true UND fan would realize this.

A good rallying cry until you decided to separate people into "true fans" and "false fans."

NCAA: You must get rid of this evil logo and nickname or you are done for.

    UND: Ok

NCAA: However, please periodically use this evil logo and nickname on university sanctioned athletic wear so that others may not use it in the future.

    UND: Ok?

Right.  You have to be a UND apologist or even a downright toadie to believe that this is how it went down.

Sure hope they prove this negative Nancy wrong, really!

It is not negative to point out the weaknesses unless you ignore the strengths.  How about our halfcourt defense slowly becoming a thing of beauty?  How about outrebounding your opponent by more than 2:1?  How about burning every team we play with Dyer's inbounding passes under the basket?  (How about Dyer's passing skills in general?)  How about Smith gaining confidence on offense to go with her already dominant defensive presence?  How about getting the hang of closing out close ones?

It was actually used by all athletic programs. The hockey program used it more extensively than the others. Some used smaller versions of the logo on their uniforms. Some didn't put the logo on their uniform at all. All used it in marketing materials. It was normally used when identifying the team on scoreboards and in the press. The logo was associated with all athletic teams from UND, it was just used more extensively by the hockey program.

Hockey is the only sport here that ever projected the Brien logo as its visual identity.  Everywhere else, its use is incidental.

  6. Dear Branders.  For you, pleasing the hockey program is everything.  Fail to do that, and your brand will not catch on.  You will hear endless talk of how the last logo was the "greatest in all of college athletics,"  or a variety of other such superlatives.  But remember:  That logo was a hockey phenomenon, going mostly* unused by all of the other athletic programs.

1-3, and the Montana swing upcoming.

This could end badly... or be the start of the turn-around

The NBA hall-of-famer MSU added as an assistant coach makes them, to me even scarier than Montana.  Our long rise from the ashes may have to wait until next week to begin.

What in the world is wrong with this team?

I think their biggest problems right now are coming from off the court.  If you watch Brewster's postgame interview you will sense a grudge against Loyd and Szabla.  I think whatever they did pissed him off good.

    What has gone wrong here?

We were way too careful against their press, We seemed to just wait for the trap to come then react.  But more importantly:  Why was Loyd on the bench for so much of the first 3 quarters?  Are she and Szabla still being punished for mysterious reasons?  If those 2 play their usual minutes we win this game.  On the bright side, Dyer had a great performance tonight.

Brewster was at the Shanley - West Fargo girls game last night. I don't know who he was looking at but 6'3" Shanley junior post Emily Dietz had a great game and is looking better and better. There were times that there were 7 players 6 ft or taller on the court at the same time in this game.

The whole coaching staff came to the Shanley game at Central a couple weeks ago as well.  I hoped they were scouting Rotunda until I heard from a Shanley fan that she was going with a Catholic school.  So I think you are right that Dietz was the target.  They may be interested in West Fargo's Moton as well.

    Nope.

We are a state flagship university that only recently moved to DI. We need to start building our own identity that people around the country recognize as the University of North Dakota's. This is even more important now that we have lost what national brand recognition we had built up with the Sioux name. The interlocking ND does the exact opposite of that.

Unfortunately we horribly blew our opportunity to replace a unique, very recognizable nickname/logo when a overused bird nickname was picked for athletics. Because of how f'hawking generic Hawks is I feel it's even more important now that we move away from a logo that 99.999% of people across the country see and think of a different university that's four states away.

Let the product sell itself.  Just win.  Any logo looks good on a champion's helmet, including the interlocking ND.

Edit:  OK, maybe not ANY logo.

But they went in focusing on stopping the 3 from this team that shoots a ton. Focused on that and it worked as UND had more 3 attempts in first half than they did.

However, they did a nice job of adjusting to that and taking it to the hole more. That's the reason for the good start and it didn't help that even at home our guys just don't seem to have their legs until the 2nd half. I don't get that.

USD's good start is one thing, but the bigger problem was on the other end of the court where we played right into their strength.  We have showed great ball movement lately but that strategy was obviously wrong against a team who knows just how to get a hand in every passing lane.  All those steals led to too many transition buckets, which is one reason why their 3-point attempts were low.  Switching from passive to aggressive was the remedy, but why does half the game have to be in the books by the time we made the change?

Also, someone mentioned USD having better talent, but I disagree.  They had Seekamp, who is one of those heady QB types who simply doesn't make mistakes and makes everyone on her team better.  But aside from her I saw nothing special further down the lineup.  It was that tight halfcourt D that got us.

  13. Brewster made the right adjustments at halftime.  I have seen him come back to win games with halftime adjustments.  But sometimes those necessary changes need to come earlier than halftime.  Hard to blame the players when they were led into a disadvantage for way to long.

I am normally impressed enough with Brewster's gameplanning, but today was not his finest showing.

But as for me, I am going to cheer for the Fighting Hawks...

Has anyone here actually used the word "Hawks" (in a cheering sense) out loud at an actual sporting event?  Because myself, I have yet to witness it used even once.

  15. How many blocks did Smith have?

Not to mention all the shots she altered just with her presence.  It was bad coaching for the bison to keep trying to get in close, especially near the end when they needed 3s anyways.  Nice to see Szabla back to full strength.

  16. Make it 2 in a row for the women.  Dyer had a nice game for UND.

Yeah, Dyer is starting to find that outside touch.  If she heats up from outside she becomes downright scary to defend.  Tonight you could tell WIU had her scouted as a drive and crash type because they played her on thier heels,  allowing her a cushion and she made them pay.
