This is the  reason I would love to see the Bison lose….the ARROGANT fan/fans like this piece of work (nd1sufan)…..home and home with Weber but not UND….hope Jacksonville can pull their arrogant noses out of the air so they don't drown if it rains!!!!

So much hate and anger for NDSU, it's like they hurt you or something?

  2. And Richmond puts NDSU at home next week......was there ever a doubt this would happen?

I think a lot of people had Illinois State in the semis.  I guess you had Richmond?

Personally, I wanted to see if NDSU could win a playoff game on the road.  The NDSU @ Illinois St. would have been fun to watch.

  3. Hard to pick against NDSU (playing at home) and UNI (hottest team in FCS) but I found this quote from lakes on the UNI message board pretty entertaining.

This is Playoffs, nothing is a slam dunk

  4. I would say he left for personal gain at UND football expense.  Tell me why this is an incorrect assumption.  As of today I don't think he gained anything but I sure the hell know he cost our football program a lot.

didn't Bubba leave for some reason?

  5. Agreed on all point. I have watched a fair share of bison football this year, and NDSU's defense improved drastically from game 1. Which actually makes the rematch against MT all the more intriguing. Even in that game, there was some nice coverage by the Bison corners, but MT just had some excellent receivers.

Anyways, I think it is certainly a fair statement to say, both teams look quite different now, than they did 3 weeks into the season. This is where I really wish those rivalry games could be played annually, because this talk is so speculative unless we actually meet in the playoffs. Otherwise, it'll be two completely different teams playing again in 4 years.

I have a feeling the teams will see each other next year, unless the committee suddenly has a change of heart when it comes to regionalization

  6. Serious question for you:

If UND and NDSU played again, do you see the numbers being the same or different? I honestly think our run D would play about the same. I also don't believe there is any way that NDSU holds UND to the same limited yardage. I'm not saying UND would rack up 300-400 yards, but there would be a substantial difference in those numbers if the two teams played again.

Need to remember that Santiago and Oliveira were true freshman. That was Santiago's 3rd college game, and either Oliveira's first or second. They definitely grew a lot of the course of the season. The benefit for NDSU was, when UND was able to stuff the run, NDSU has the passing game to turn to. At that point in the season we did not (though another glaring area that we improved on by the end of the season).

If I can take a moment to comment on your question...

I think the numbers would be different.  UND would most likely run the ball more effectively, but if you feel like UND's defense would play "about the same" then I would expect NDSU's rushing numbers to be somewhat different as well, because it's rushing game has gotten better throughout the season.

IMHO, I would expect the numbers to be different for both teams, but not sure how different, then we are just speculating.

Remember UND is not the only team with injuries and true freshman.

  7. Sorry to resurrect this discussion, but I was on vacation last week without decent internet access. This is not regarding any particular player, but my question is--should the mere fact that a player redshirts mean that he should automatically get the fifth year on scholarship? I don't pretend to know the "right" answer, but I do struggle with whether it's entirely fair to give a player who never pans out a fifth year on scholarship, when so many players now don't redshirt, either out of necessity or because they're just too good, and therefore only get four years. To me, the more fair way to do things would be to essentially guarantee four years, so long as certain expectations are met in terms of working hard, staying out of trouble and taking care of business in the classroom. The fifth year would be decided on more of a case-by-case basis, which would be explained up front when the decision as to whether to redshirt or not is made. For all I know, this is done already.

EDIT: I don't know what happened with the above post I attempted to quote, but I couldn't seem to get it fixed using the edit function.

I'm not sure if it is mandatory by the NCAA or if some schools choose to do it or not, but I know that players that do not redshirt and play their first 4 years, are still awarded a scholarship the fifth year.  Some schools have them student coach, or help in other ways.

  8. Bowl talk...It would be nice if the FCS had a bowl system. They have ice cream bowls and I lost my dog bowls for FBS schools that win six games, why not have FCS bowls? There are a ton of companies that are raking in some serious cheese that could use a tax break for being the sponsor, while giving the chance for schools like UND to play one more game against a team from another conference. Stipulations: play another conference outside of your own, best 2 of 3 coin flip to decide the home site, and the game is played the Thanksgiving weekend. Who cares what the bowl is called because its all about the competition and a chance to say I played in a bowl game. Am I crazy for thinking this?

I think you are on to something here... They should create a subdivision of teams that would rather compete in bowl games at the end of the regular season vs. a national playoff tournament.

  9. This is key.  For years the MVFC only got a couple teams into the tournament and they than raised a fuss about how they were the "best conference" and should get more teams.  I believe that is a big reason WIU got in this year and they put 5 teams in last year.  The Big Sky needs a couple teams to make a run to prove the quality of football being played.  Having some teams go deep into the playoffs or all the way will be a way to petition to get more teams in next season.

They didn't raise a fuss, they raised the level of play on the field.

I'm not sure if I read it here or somewhere else, but someone pointed out a downside of regionalization for other conferences is it eliminates opportunities to beat MVFC teams.  I agree with that

  10. A lot of P5 teams seem to be on the cusp of six wins, but they normally don't relish the thought of playing in a low level bowl reserved for Sun Belt, CUSA, or MAC teams.  The NCAA would have to allow 5-7 teams, which is quite likely, or FCS teams that have six or more victories, which is more remote.  If a P5 team is matched up with an FCS team, could see a lot of declined bids.

UND vs Minnesota would be cool.

There is talk in the cities that if Minnesota becomes bowl eligible and receives an invite, they may turn it down.

I think that would be interesting, and could be a trend setting event.

Personally, I love watching bowl games, but there are just too many of them.  If teams start turning down invites the growth of bowl games could be reversed.

  11. Coach Schweigert on the radio. Really feel for the guy. I have mostly stayed out of the discussion regarding the playoffs. I don't watch enough FCS football to say for certain who should or should not be in.

A.) 24 is too many. If you are taking a 6-5 team, At-Large, that's embarrassing for everyone. They should honestly go back to 16 or 20.

B.) I only watched about 7 quarters of UND football this year (a bit of Drake, half of NDSU, and I went to Idaho St). So I literally saw pretty much the worst of the worst UND had to offer this season.

C.) I don't like how many teams are in the Big Sky. It's very difficult to tell who is good and who is not.

D.) From reading in a few different forums, looks like you guys got jobbed but as some others have said, win those "easy" games and take it out if the committees hands.

Couple things:  I think 24 teams is just right, but the committee didn't get the best teams in the field.  I think by seeding all 24 teams, there is no worry of regionalization, or loading one side of the bracket with 6 of the top 8 teams.

  12. having the two best teams from last year in the same conference does not automatically make it the best conference and every team in it too 25 quality.  I don't buy the strength of schedule arguement.

MVFC is the top football conference; not because of having the two best teams last year, but because of the best non-conference record this year.

You are correct that having the two best teams last year doesn't make every team top 25 quality.  Having 8 teams in the top 25 makes those 8 teams top 25 quality

  13. Here will be our plan for next year, we will just rest all of our starters against our toughest 3 opponents next year so we can get in a number of good quality losses, and keep our starters fresh so we can beat everybody else.  Might also prevent our players from getting their leg broken by a cheap shot.

Yeah, but next year the playoff committee will use different standards to select the teams that make it.  Next year they might look at margin of victory.

I'm a big FCS football fan, because there is a lot of great football played at this level across the nation.  When the committee changes the standards they use to select playoff teams, and regionalize the games to save a few bucks, it deters fans from following FCS football.

A couple things need to happen IMHO:

1.)  be more transparent with what teams need to do to be eligible.

2.)  meet for several weeks leading up to the selection (similar to FBS).

3.) **MOST IMPORTANT**  seed all 24 teams (so they can't match up #9SDSU with #3NDSU in second round, which has happened 3 of last 4 years).

  14. I am shocked as well.

The UNI athletic director is the MVFC representative and I'm not sure who represents the Big Sky, but both did a poor job advocating on behalf of the teams in their conference.

I think the committee should seed all 24 teams, the regionalization is BS as well.

  15. How many FBS wins did the Big sky Conference have this year?    How does it compare to MVFC and other FCS conferences?

Big Sky has the most of all FCS conferences with 3.

Missouri Valley has 1, not sure why that matters.  If Big Sky gets 5 teams in the playoffs (which is possible), it won't be because of the conference's record against FBS teams.  Each team needs to have the best resume possible, and UND and PSU will both be in because of their resumes.

  16. I think we are at a slight disadvantage with the late start, but not with the committee.   Our guys are playing later than they are used to.   I wish the game was an early afternoon game instead, but that said  we win our first game as the Hawks.

I agree, the committee will be meeting and watching the game.  they will probably have scenarios ready for if UND wins and for if UND loses

  17. Yes and I'm simply saying bad losses hurt.  Yes big wins help too, i never said they didn't.  I was basing 7-4 teams with similar SOS and wins against similar caliber teams but one team loses to trash and the others worst loss is to an above 500 team.

Committee will look at FBS win and PSU win long before ISU loss.

  18. Correct me if I'm wrong, but here's how UND doesn't get in?:

Eastern Washington beats Portland State. EWU is in.

Montana beats Montana State. Montana is in.

    Winner of SSU and NAU.

    Portland State is already in.

.....I'm not sure five teams would get in from the Big Sky.

It would be do they choose EWU or UND with identical records. Do they choose UND with the FBS win or EWU with the better conference record?

Another reason to cheer for Southern Utah, Montana State, and Portland of course, because otherwise EWU losses could all potentially be against playoff teams (If UNI wins they are probably in...Go Southern Illinois) and the Oregon Ducks.

    Yes

  19. This part I'm not so sure about.

SUU could be one missed field goal away from winning a Big Sky Championship and getting an autobid.

But because they missed that field goal not even make the playoffs?! I think the committee will use some discretion.

A few years ago, Lehigh was undefeated and playing the last regular season game against a conference team with a few non-conference losses, but also undefeated in the conference.  The winner would receive the auto-bid.  Lehigh lost the game and ended the regular season with one loss, and was left out of the playoffs.

crazy things happen this time of year!

  20. http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/football/fcs/stats-fcs-top-25

According to the STATS poll, UND has enough votes for the #32 spot.

If they were to beat Cal Poly, they could rise into the high 20s (29 or 28); would that be enough to get in?

Obviously the # of DI wins and the FBS win will be looked at, but I think a legitimate position in the polls will also be important for UND to get an at-large bid out of the Big Sky Conference. Losing that Idaho State game when UND was ranked #25 really hurt as far as poll positioning goes...

The selection committee does not consider polls when determining the playoff field.  It might be an indicator for the teams in, but I'm not sure what extent?

  21. James Madison has been outbid before. Really wouldn't be a surprise to see it happen.

If you are referring to 2011 when E. Kentucky hosted and JMU went on the road for the first round game.  That was a unique situation because the Ohio Valley Conference paid for E Kentucky to host in hopes that they would finally get a playoff win. IIRC
