Just a simple question.  If Avants can barley jump over a phone book why do the coach's have him take the opening tip?

Avants has ok hops for 6'6'' 230lb big sky kid...jumps better than he did last season....I notice seales got the tip in an ot. jump ball...he gets up quick with excellent timing...Bernstine does not do jump balls I guess Avants is better than him.  I would try letting Shanks jump and then pull him ASAP

  2. ESPN Insider Best and Worst case scenero's.....

    15. North Dakota

    155.png?w=110&h=110&transparent=true

Best case: Brian Jones' squad keeps the game against Arizona within 15 points.
Worst case: The Wildcats' Allonzo Trier and Lauri Markkanen flow early with an inside-outside attack that the Fighting Hawks can't handle

    2. Arizona

    12.png?w=110&h=110&transparent=true

Best case: More confetti after the Wildcats win the national championship.
Worst case: Freshman forward Lauri Markkanen's slump from the 3-point line returns as Arizona loses in the Sweet 16 to a squad with the size and athleticism on the perimeter to disrupt the Wildcats.

Just wanted to say friendly hello and gain some more info on your team.

Other than random threads, the only info we seem to have is this
    http://www.azdesertswarm.com/basketball/2017/3/13/14902182/ncaa-tournament-in-depth-look-analysis-arizona-wildcats-first-round-matchup-north-dakota-bracket
Would you say this is pretty accurate?

Will Fighting Hawks utilize a zone?  Arizona's offense looks confused and constipated for a good few minutes when even a simple zone is implemented.

Our 7'0 Serbian center Ristic actually does worse against smaller athletic  4s than traditional bigs.  How athletic is your smaller front line?

How deep does your bench run?  Arizona will try to wear down as we go 8-9 deep depending on opponent.

No one in the tourney is to be overlooked, but I'm interested to see how the low post size difference is compensated for.  Wichita State cut us off at the knees last year, by completely shutting down our guards which starved our much bigger and stronger frontline.   Though, Arizona's has a 15 seed loss in history, I believe it took a certain Steve Nash to accomplish that task.

Regardless, I look forward to watching the game.  From my reading of his style of play, I expect at least Hooker to go off.    Thank you for allowing me to post on your forum.

mostly man to man ,some zone, UND plays 2 star recruits only player to ever hold high major offer is Shanks off the bench...Front line is not very athletic...blue collar grinders. Wichita state does get some higher rated kids....Nash was a 15th pick in NBA draft...  Nothing like that at UND...classic David vs Goliath

Now I know you're not exactly Jim Dahl when it comes to intellect but I literally said he didn't have to be the one to take the interview. Someone, anyone, could have filled in and all would have been fine.

Well I said posted that long before you did...imitation is the greatest form of flattery

As near as I can tell the meeting came up and Jones never told his SID that he could no longer make it on air.  Does that sound plausible?

Yes however KFAN was in contact with UND SID and did not convey the knowledge that Jones was done...they expressed opinion that Jones might still call in a little late....Plenty of blame to go around

Since you seem to know that factoid, do tell of the outcomes because if it was that important I'm pretty sure we can all surmise the subject matter.

Naive to think Jones was involved with setting up the interview or that it was his personal responsibility to deal directly with KFAN with respect to scheduling conflict...blame jones all you want if it makes you happy...but that is not how things work

and you know this how?  Unless you are part of the AD or are Jones himself?  Doesn't matter if meeting wasn't optional, if that is the case, call and set up another time.  It takes a XXXX XXX to stand up KFAN at this time to help build this program.

Because I am not stupid....I already posted that it was handled poorly...by all UND parties involved

Typical Jones..... And @hoops44 wonders why people !@#$ on Jones all the time. Just have someone take the interview. People who are underselling the importance of this are just plain stupid. It's a terrible look for us at a time when it should be all roses.

man you are one xxxx xxx....meeting was not an optional one....I ALREADY POSTED they should have another coach ...try thinking for yourself

I guess I disagree with your premise.  I don’t think the fact that UND men won 22 games so far this season is a result of Jones suddenly becoming a better coach, motivator, recruiter, etc.   There are so many things that go into each team and each season, that to break it down to so simple an idea is flawed.   Sure, coaches continually learn and evolve, but they aren’t dumb coaches one year and brilliant coaches the next.   Bill Belichick is a great coach even in bad years for his team, there are just dozens of circumstances that go into making it a great year or a bad year.

If you’ve never played, coached or recruited at the college athletics level you can’t even imagine the things that go into a team’s success.  Of course, getting good players to come to UND is critical.  But, these young college student athletes are each unique.  Personality, ability, classroom aptitude, effort, desire, homesickness, parents, girlfriends, maturity, etc., all play a part, and they are different for each kid.   Chemistry among a group of kids is hard to define.   Coaching staff, of course, is another critical element.  It’s clear this group of players and coaches has some real chemistry.

I believe Jones has tried to assemble the best combination of athletes and good young men, each and every recruiting class.  Being a school known for hockey, in one of coldest, remote locations puts us at a small disadvantage in a lot of recruiting battles.   We do well once a kid visits and sees what UND has to offer, but we do miss out on kids who decline to even consider UND.   I’ve talked to former UND athletes who have said they visited UND knowing they would never accept an offer here, but after visiting and meeting the staff and seeing the facilities, plus seeing the quality of the education UND offered, they jumped at the chance to come here.   And they remain proud they did decades later.

I think this team is a reflection of that.  I love watching Avants.  His intensity and effort on the court remind me of a lot of the intense Sioux BB players of the past, Clausen, S Brekke, etc.   The fact that Jones got him to come here from OK was great.   But, if Connor was 2 or 3 inches taller, with his ability, he would be playing at a major university, we wouldn’t have been able to land him.   Shanks had limited options when he transferred and as a result we were able to get him.   Bernstine had a coaching connection and we were able to bring him in.  I think Huff was another example from year’s past, if he would have been a couple inches taller and 25 pounds heavier, I think he would have been a star at a major basketball school.  Over the years, we’ve had some great kids who were a good fit for UND basketball.

This team is an amazing collection of guys that maybe were overlooked a little by other schools.  Some unique stories.  But, they bought into Jones’ style and in talking to several of them over the last couple  years, they love the staff and couldn’t be prouder to be representing UND.

One thing this season might do is make it easier to compete for some of those good young men, who have many D1 options for their playing career, to now consider UND as one of the programs they want to compete at.   This season can really help in the recruiting process going forward.

Just my thoughts as one of those “gray haired guys” who has followed Sioux basketball for over 50 years.  Can’t wait to watch the UND – Arizona game!   Win or lose, I think it will be a great night for UND basketball going forward.

Finally someone with some knowledge and common sense

  10. AZ boasts four 5 star recruits and four 4 star recruits.... Mcdonald All Americans vs Guys who eat at Mcdonalds....ESPN Joe Lunardi Take on Game.....

    HOW FAR WILL THEY GO?

Best-case scenario: More than just 'happy to be here'
North Dakota is making its first trip to the Big Dance. For some schools, that is reason enough for celebration. That celebration can wear on some teams and lead to a blowout loss in the first round. North Dakota is talented enough to overcome that issue and play a competitive game.

Worst-case scenario: Blown out in the first round
There is, of course, the chance that North Dakota's Big Sky championship was the highlight of its season. This team has played more games against non-Division I opponents than any of the top 100 teams in the RPI. That may not bode well for success in March. If the Fighting Hawks offense sputters, they'll head to halftime with the game already out of reach.

Investing in a program can be more than just coaches salaries.  Lots of good coaches out there that would love to have a fully funded program with FCOA, a gym much better than a high school gym that fans attend and have a great atmosphere, weight facilities.  Jones may not be paid the best but he has some great recruiting tools.  That's why I don't feel bad for him.

He has also done plenty to draw criticism for his coaching.  His next step will be success OOC. He has struggled throughout his career but has also faced some challenges with nickname and conference (Great West) that made it difficult.

exactly what part of his coaching is the problem and why

  12. Winning is about first and foremost about recruiting  then player retention, injuries, team chemistry,  bench coaching, game prep,   and a bit of luck.  Hayford of EW does not grab a stud grad transfer each of the last 2 years they struggle ...Bill Evans Has been named COY 4 imes last year was BSC COY and NABC  COY...this year he is a bottom feeder....after 30 years of coaching he certainly knows how to coach ....Pitino at Mn is Big Ten COY they finished 4th.. this season last 2 years the haters thought he could not coach his way out and should be thrown to the curb....now they like some here are eating crow... Winning entails a lot more then x's and o's a heck of a lot more....Every D1 HC out there know the X'S and O'S  you just do not fall into a HC job at this level....Putting together a staff ,selling the program, the location and the school to the recruits required to compete at the highest level on a yearly basis is the tough part....With Weber Basketball is King and the[r fans have every logical right to expect perennial success , Montana has the number 2 hoops program in the BSC....after that it is up for grabs and the AD that puts the most into it and prioritizes it the most should expect  commesurate results.  If Jones was a bad x and o/game prep and or game coach they would be a perennial bottom feeder in BSC  and would never win BSC title and Tourney...That is why people who know the game rarely blame coaching...Coaching is not Brain Surgery ..  Rarely folks who rip coaches coaching ability are  able to point their finger at and X and O flaw....they simply look at the end result and blame the coach...a very juvenile level of discernment

If I were to odds it, I'd say 85% chance he stays.   If Drake is serious about Jones, I bet he takes it and take Horner with him.

Drake is a bottom feeder program ...They do pay in the 350 to 450K range and can get a coach with a better resume than Jones . That being said the high academic standards there and the lack of in state talent after Iowa,Iowa st, and UNI get done makes it a risky move for a coach who is doing well at another program and might do better to wait for a better gig .
