Maybe we could get NDSU to pay UND to come up here and have Grady and crew whoop therm up a little. Shouldn't be too hard to convince those geniuses that it's basically a home game for them, seeing as they are the only team that matters.
-
I know they do different things as a team in the community for different charities. In the spring/summer the guys coach local basketball kids. Of course they have their camp as well that the players coach in.Well said Irish.
Also, I'm curious what jones does if anything to be involved in the community. I haven't heard of any programs the basketball team gets involved in for gf's youth. Maybe I'm wrong here and they are very involved and I just haven't noticed. But if they want to boost the team's hype without winning I think this would be the first place to start.
-
Very well stated Irish!

Let me say it before someone from %gobc...
Jones is NOT getting an extension anytime soon. When the team does better next year, I believe he wouldn't even get it then. He would/should be evaluated in his final year
-
Agreed. Grew up watching UNLV, and seeing Tark with his towel.First Dean Smith and now Jerry Tarkanian...a tough week for old-time coaches.
-
With all the great, positive press that has come to NDSU thanks to their football excellence, I'm sure they will spin it some way to show academic advancement.
-
Don't we have a football player by the name of Grady that can accomplish that? Who needs Chuck Norris?Chuck Norris could kill a bison with his bare hands.
-
AGREED!Not necessarily would it have to be Roman... could attempt to make it our own "Northern Legion"; "NoDak Legion"... I just think the name has an edge to it and has some conviction which I hope the new nickname carries those traits. I would like for someone who doesn't know about UND to say "they have a badass name and logo." Something worth cheering for.
Possibility that some "committee" figures this out and gets it right? Good luck!

Correct, Hawk, Michael Hegstrand died. They were a good tag team, I think only one of them are alive.
Animal, Joe Laurinaitis, is still alive.
-
When I see Legion of Doom, I think of Animal and Hawk, The Road Warriors! "What a Rush!" (I think I just dated myself)

Seeing as this is a hypothetical thread. Maybe another thread should be started, but for now, let's look ahead to next year.
Starting five-
Hooker
Seales
Crandall
Bernstine
Shanks
And a nice bench to supplement
In that staying group tho, you have three players that can get off anytime, and they play will with their teammates. What if that team does make the conference championship tournament and loses. Or even gets to the dance. Maybe still see some issues with coaching. What then? But I am really looking forward to next year!

One thing I would agree with is that the talent on this year's team, along with incoming recruits for next year, is very good for the Big Sky Conference; however, that's more of a result of the University and it's facilities rather than the coaching. Jones has shown he can gather DI talent, but the handling of that DI talent in game situations is questionable in my opinion. I think there are many DII coaches and DI assistants out there, with an even lesser salary than Jones, that could get more out of the players currently on the team. Jones has too many blow out losses during his tenure, including conference games (Weber State) and rival games (the last 3 road games vs. NDSU). It's admirable that UND has done well in conference the past two years, but that's despite of the coaching and much more of a result of the poor conference competition in the Big Sky Conference. When talking to people who have direct college basketball experience, I'm always told Jones is not an impressive coach by any means. UND deserves better, because yes UND is a hockey school first and football school second, but superb coaching is the one thing that could get UND men's basketball dancing.
Must be confusing football facilities with basketball facilities. The Betty is a nice place to play. When it's packed, it's a great environment. But the university has little to do with a player coming to play. The coaches recruit the kids to play in their program with their style of play. They really don't have a lot to sell but themselves and the playing time.
I will agree with you and your "people's" opinion. Coach seems to lack in some areas. That being said...due to his success last couple years, his subsequent extension, the new guys here and coming... Let the season play out. They are supposed to be ninth in the BSC. Faison isn't getting rid of Jones this year. If things go bad next year and you see the same issues as this year, then we as fans/alumni/supporters need to demand better. I will be expecting better next year, and if it isn't, I will be voicing myself in letters to the athletic department demanding better.
-
Whether you want to admit it or not, it is a factor. Granted we may deal with it, but kids don't look at it the way we do.You kidding? It's a lot more windy on this side of the river.
-
That makes too much sense to make sense. You give Jones and Muss/Schweigert the support/facilities hockey has and its a different deal. Thats a poor comparison.
Basketball isn't on the same level as hockey? But Jones has everything at his disposal to get the kids that want everything. A recruiting trip thru the Ralph to sell a basketball player on going to UND is like handing him a bar of gold. How can they not want to come here. (Then they say, we have played games here)

Amazing how this blew up into a fire Jones thread again. Sioux2013, you had too much logic in your post! This year, I have questioned his decisions more than ever. But, Jones is not being fired this year! Next year will be his make or break year. With the players that will be on the floor, winning the BSC should be the goal. If they are not competing for it, unless injuries occur, then we will have reason to call for his release.

Starting a win streak. Guys finally becoming a team that wins down stretch. Win by 8

How about now?

I said earlier in this thread that I don't feel real strongly one way or the other about Jones. Well after this week, particularly last night, I'm starting to lean one way rather than the other and I bet most could guess which way that is.
In the last week there were two televised games, back to back, against the two opponents that every self respecting North Dakota fan wants to beat more than any other. I would guess there were more eyes on the men's program over the last two weeks both from near and afar than there has been in a long time. What was the result? Two 30 point losses.
What did the "casual" fans that we are trying to entice to show up at the Sioux Center, the ones that normally don't follow but maybe were this week because of who we were playing get to see? They got to see that UND plays some pretty bad basketball.
Now I am not saying that I expected to beat Minnesota. But a competetive game would have been nice. I know we hung in there OK through the first half, but the wheels came off as the often do in the 2nd half and the end result was a 36 point loss which is a beat down in any gym.
In 30 years of watching UND basketball I can't recall a more disappointing effort off the top of my head than what I saw last night. The coach said he was disappointed with the effort put forth by his players. Well at some point, doesn't it fall on the coach to motivate his players to give their best effort?
Nobody better be looking past Dickinson St., because the UND team I saw last night could not beat Dickinson St.............
It is the coaches job to prepare his team for the game. I will be the first to say, doesn't look like that was done. However, I know for a fact the team didn't follow game plan and the players decided to take it on themselves. A lot of that is inexperience, it showed. And Jones went to his bench and played others to try and send message. We have to wait until the next game to see if that got thru to them.
The coach can talk about motivating his players, but in reality if a player can't get motivated on his own, especially for that game, something is wrong. And not pointing to anything specifically wrong with any player not motivated, but the game snowballed into a disaster, and with young players it's tough to fight out of it. The mental aspect is so tough to learn. Let's see if they can pick it up against Dickenson State.
-
However, more money can be allocated to acquire better assistant's for Jones if they keep him thru his contract. To lose the assistants he has is tough also.
-
I'm close to jumping on. But it's got to be a package deal. Faison has to go as well. The basketball department needs better representation
-
BSville going to be rowdy.
Tonight it's on Jones, and he has to take responsibility.
Side note: broadcaster on 100.3 was saying how the team couldn't practice at the Betty, but I don't see how that translates to this beating
-
That is hilarious! Way to find a positive. Don't think Jones will use it thoOne encouraging point is that we didn't give up a big first half lead.

The coach we want just took a job at usd

I thought they said a committee was being formed to form a committee to pick the name? My money is on Kelley just picking a name that is deemed suitable. But maybe, the end is near?
