  1. Just a hypothetical, as I could see this as being another reason to hate on Coach Jones, but there is another possibility.  Perhaps Jones has a friendship or acquaintance with Nike.  It is possible that person is giving Jones a great deal on apparel.  I don't know the numbers, but I agree with above poster, that if the money was substantial Faison would have forced the deal.

But, they will gladly and surely do whatever to "tier below them" to make their own lives easier. If that's change the FBS rules to make more "G5/tier below" teams to make guarantees cheaper, I could readily see that. Plus, it waters that "tier below" down to make the P5 appear all the better.

You are onto something. It's a money thing. They can keep larger part of the pie amongst themselves. The tier below them still has bowls, but less likely to get into playoffs.

The P5 isnt going to allow anyone else in their party. Thats one of the reasons they have autonomy. Yes they will increase the playoff field but not the numbers some think to get a G5 in.

And I suppose you were one to say the Big Ten would never add more teams. (Just a bit of useless trivia. With the financial issues in Illinois, if Chicago State wanted back in the Big Ten, they would have to be allowed in). The Big Ten will expand again likely to 16, the Big 12 wants to get back to at least twelve. I can't speak for the other conferences but they also have gone thru expansion.

If they do 12-16 it should include all conference winners plus a few bubble teams. Makes the regular season more exciting if you are a fan of a team from a G5 conference.

That is the thought for the larger groupings.  The argument for eight as you can imagine is, "we have so many really good teams tho" coming from the big and good conferences (SEC, Big Ten, ACC). They want multiple teams represented. I'm sure the Pac 12 isn't far behind.  And of course the idiots in the Big 12 (idiots because they don't know how to count to 12, I know Big Ten also has this problem, but they at least they got their minimum) want their conference represented. Add in a G5 program that is having a great year, or Notre Dame (tho I think they will fall into conference), and you are easily at eight, again upsetting the bigger conferences, so then you have to expand to at least twelve.

***There is some tread on what SiouxVolley puts forth about UND and BSC, I'll get into the whole realignment thing another day.  But the Playoff Expansion is a part of it

This could hurt LSU's SOS either way if they want to make it to that precocious "playoff".

They are in the SEC, making the playoff there is pretty manageable.

The Playoff will jump to eight teams as soon as they can, maybe 12-16 by then,

Why?  The instances are almost amazingly very few and far between during Jones' tenure where something he's drawn up under pressure during a timeout has yielded a positive result.  Better to just let the players run with it in that situation IMO.

Agreed that he has not had much success drawing up a play at end of games. But just take TO to tell players get it into Geno's or Q's hands on the break (or from OB) and go from there. Usually want PG to have ball and make decision.

I was yelling at screen when Drick was coming up floor, then louder when he passed it to Collins, then I was swearing when my feed cut out! Have I mentioned I hate eversport?

Did Avants get hurt or something? How come he didn't get out there in the 2nd half.

We had 2. I would have called one as soon as we got the rebound.

    I believe he got hurt.

YES should have taken timeout.  Coach can't call it, but had time during free throw to tell everyone take a timeout after rebound.  But I suppose I can't blame it on Jones yet can I?

And even that might not be enough to get a top 2 spot.  This is where dropping the UNC game hurt the most.

Unless UND wins the league or something crazy happens in the BSC playoffs, they will more than likely have to go through Weber and Montana to get to the dance. Watch for EWU, they have the guards and post (Jois) that can give Weber and Montana fits as well.

I am more concerned about solidifying that top 4 seed.  If UND happen to pass Montana or Weber along the way... so be it.

Just have to take it one game at a time.  Beat Eastern

Or the loss to Montana, or the one to Idaho. BOTH AT HOME!!!

But agree with your last statement!

Not sure what part is dumb.  UND basketball was once more popular/successful than hockey, but probably will not be again.

In the Herald's defense, Wayne did specify "in Grand Forks". On a regional and national scale, the popularity isn't even close to a contest nor would the exposure could be brought to UND from what the basketball team could do. No different than down at FargoU. Their NCAA basketball win was worth way more in exposure than their 5 championships combined but it is obvious which sport is more popular in Fargo.

    1 hour ago, Cratter said:

I read it as "Grand Forks" because that's where UND is located.

The days when basketball was on par—or at least in the same zip code—with UND men's hockey may not ever return to Grand Forks.

"the days when UND basketball is even comparable to UND mens hockey will probably never be seen in Grand Forks."

Such a dumb comment when the whole article was trying to praise the basketball team.

VMeister:  It was a comment that wasn't needed.  His piece would have been better without it.  When the team goes to the NCAA Tournament, which I presume in the next few years they will, it will bring more pub to UND than hockey.  That writing only lends to the "hockey college" belief

In GF, will hockey ever be supplanted? Maybe, but tough to do.

Before the season, after the overseas trip, it was mentioned that the chemistry this team had was completely different from previous years. Players understood and embraced their roles and were actually buying in. Easy to write something like that off as preseason hype but it appears to have a fair amount of truth behind it. No clue on the exact reason for it, but I still think the transition/conference affiliation/nickname combination had a bigger impact than anyone realized. The staff had to take some chances on some players that were talented but weren't quite the perfect fit and then tried filling some of those holes with transfers that weren't necessarily great fits, compounding the problems (though it almost paid off). Still a ways to go but there is definitely noticeable progress that has been made this season and that is encouraging.

Staff is doing a Great Job coaching wise...Talent level rates at the Bottom of BSC per Verbal Commits recruit rating chart....

    Idaho State Bengals 2.000 isubengals
    Montana Grizzlies 2.264 gogriz
    Montana State Bobcats 2.026 msubobcats
North Dakota Fighting Hawks 2.000 fightingsioux
    Northern Arizona Lumberjacks 2.282 nauathletics
    Northern Colorado Bears 2.051 uncbears
    Portland State Vikings 2.194 goviks
    Sacramento State Hornets 2.042 hornetsports
    Southern Utah Thunderbirds 2.000 suutbirds
    Weber State Wildcats 2.205

The ranking thing is being debated in the football thread, but it holds the same in basketball.  Unless they are Top100 or so, it's murky at best.

However, UND has recruited some serious talent and athletes in the last few years.  May with high level experience.

I can't speak for all, but here's start.

Q- Mr. Basketball (MN) with State Championship experience.

Geno- Multiple State Championships (MN) under one of the best coaches in the nation, leading the team as PG

McDermott- Led team to championship tourney (3rd place-best record ever)

Cortez- Led team to State Championship, first ever

Collins- Same school/coach as Geno, DeLaSalle. multiple state championships, more of a role player, but did his job exceptionally well. This kid is athletic!

Wheeler- Also has State Championship experience, played all four years of Varsity.

Shanks- One of the top centers to come out of MN.  Not sure about championship tourneys, but led team to many wins

(please add if choose to do so, son't know Avants and others history)

POINT being these guys know how to play the game and what it takes to win.  They want to continue the success they've had throughout their young career, and will work at doing so.

Let's continue to enjoy the show

I think Avants has earned a start in the next two games. Let Shanks come off the bench to provide depth and to keep his fouls down.

Also none too impressed with the BSC officials this weekend. They were horrible both ways. But lots of phantom calls on Carson, and a brutal anticipation traveling call on Hooker on Thursday night. Are they too proud in those cases to reverse their original call?  This guy just got more adement about it when mildly challenged by Jones and wildly challenged by the crowd.

I was thinking about Avants getting the start as well but do you change it up if your Jones.  The rotation now is working.

As long as Avants is getting the most minutes, doesn't much matter who starts.  I am really impressed with that kid.  Love his hustle and work ethic.  Looks like high basketball IQ guy too.  He may be undersized to play the 5, but he makes up for that in so many other ways.

I have been wondering the same thing for awhile.  What does Avants have to do to get the start?  I like Shanks, and think he could be an asset.  Use him as a true post player, as he does better in those situations.  He needs to work on hands, finishing, and defense, among playing more up tempo.  Avants plays well in the pick/roll system and is very good on defense.  If you bring Shanks off the bench, I think you give him a chance to have better matchups and hopefully bring his confidence level up.

im a big proponent of redshirting ALL players...collins is someone in my opinion that should have redshirted for sure this year considering the small valuable minutes he has played this year.

    19 hours ago, sioux24/7 said:

Yeah that's the thing I don't think everyone realizes. The player has a say in it. But I definitely agree it would have been nice to redshirt him. I'm thinking it did wonders for Geno.

Collins should definitely redshirted.   With all the forwards on this team, the coaching staff should have had his best interest in mind and made it a point that it would be a benefit to him.

I believe Geno was a year young coming in, and it definitely helped him.

I hate to keep ripping on him, but the flow of the offense is ten times better when Shanks is on the bench.  things grind to a halt when he's clogging up the middle.   he can be a valuable situational guy off the bench, but to expect major minutes from him just doesn't seem wise at this point.

Agree completely.  He should be coming off the bench.  He can be useful.  I really like the passion he plays with, needs to get that bit under control.  But there is time in the game, when UND is going thru subs to rest Geno and Q, that he could be used.

Pick and roll game exposes his weakness. Not a great pick and roll big. I doubt he would have come here if he knew he'd be setting so many ball screens.

with that said, up by 4 at half with him playing heavy minutes. Decent lead when they took him out. Didn't play the rest of the half. Lost by 1.

They single him down low in the post quite often.  I've seen him be successful in both areas, but have seen him fail in both instances as well.  There were times he played well and  should have went back to him, he helped create even more of a mismatch for Bernstine.

These guys deserved this win, and the people that matter better know it.  Then they need to do something about it

Just saw the final shot on the sports.  What the actual hell? - This is what we come up with after a time out.  As someone who grew up watching Dave Gunther, Jones drives me absolutely nuts.

    3 minutes ago, Siouxphan27 said:

exactly, it just doesn't work.  and as you or someone else mentioned, you don't get those bail out type body contact calls at the end of a game.

the guys seemed tired at the end.  the bench was shortened a little in the second half.

This is one thing that is so frustrating with Jones coaching.  His play calls after TO's is mind boggling.  I will say, it was nice to see them go 2-for-1 finally.  But, yeah, not going to get the foul call on the final play of the game.

Watched the game with some basketball people, and they brought something up I didn't see.  Shanks plays like the game is too fast at times. Whether it's late movement on pick and roll, or not ready to catch a pass.  He has other problems too that are frustrating.  However, he has his good moments too. Plus, he is a seven footer.  The coaching staff has to figure a way to use his strengths to help the team, and his teammates need to keep him focused and positive.

Geno's put back dunk is 50/50 call.  (I won't rip these refs)  I've seen that same play not waived off many times.  That is a rule that needs to be addressed sometime.

Turnover's always come back to get you.

This game was one UND should have won.  Drick had mismatch regularly and Jones didn't force the play to go to him more often. Especially on the last play.
