  1. Haha wrong corner; I live in northern Maine.

The only other possible place for you to live for that long of a drive. You did not say what type of dog or how old the dog is. Is it your dog that has been staying with someone else and now gets to go home with his mommy?
  2. Christian Horn is well known in Minnesota hockey circles due to his high school career at Benilde St Margarets. (He was also a really good lacrosse player in high school too). He turned down scholarship offers to basically walk on at Minnesota. I was wondering if he was going to stick at the U...

I was thinking the same thing. He had to have had other offers and you confirmed that. Well now he can transfer and sit out a year and play somewhere else. Question though for people with more knowledge than I. Would these last two years of not playing hurt him much? What confuses me, and what doesn't, is how can the second all time leading scorer at a good program not see any ice time with the rodents? Did Lucia just not like him or something?
  3. I have already made alternate plans to get to and from the games without the convenience of the shuttle. I refuse to be happy about my new arrangements. Chalk it up to my stubborn, cranky old ladyness. I think discontinuing the shuttle was a Mickey Mouse, penny wise and pound foolish move. My hope is that the shuttle is revived, the Ralph kicks in to help defray some of the operating costs and each person using the shuttle is asked to pay a fair amount for the convenience.

Why don't you call UND and as them for a complete financial rundown. It is a public record.
  4. I don't think it was me that said UND was exempt from the parking requirements. I'm pretty sure that it was someone else. UND has to follow all zoning and building regulations within the city so it only makes sense that they have to follow parking regulations. All state and county property within the city has to follow city ordinance.

The parking at the Wellness Center, the parking around Albatross and north of Albatross have all been added since the original parking plan was set with the city. The list you posted included the bookstore, Family Practice Center and the strip mall. That's why I said that they may now actually exceed that 2,850 number if they include all of these new spots. If they exceed the required number the city would have trouble forcing UND to continue a shuttle service, especially since UND opened several parking lots much closer than Memorial Stadium since the original plan was set. As I said, UND and REA work directly with the city on these parking issues. REA consulted both the city and UND when they were looking at changing the exit plan for the parking lots this fall.

My bad. You just thought they meet the requirements. They did with the exemption. They were counting the Memorial parking lot and all the others in the area. And when you get down to it all of those lots are a legit claim to having enough spaces required. Comparing the parking around this arena compared to others there really is enough parking.
  5. They wouldn't be in violation if they provide enough spots in other lots. The parking at the Wellness Center was added after the plan was made. The parking area at Albatross and north of there were also added after the original plan was made. The response says that the available parking sites on site "nearly exceeds" the 2,850 spots needed for the building. If you add in the spots at the Wellness Center and at Albatross and north I would guess that the number of spots actually exceeds the 2,850. Once they exceed the required number, the 2,850, any other parking they provide is beyond the requirements. In addition to those spots you have on street parking, the lot at Tabula, and the Med School lot. Originally, the only lot that UND used for the additional parking was at Memorial. That's why they ran the shuttle from there. They stopped running that shuttle several years ago when they opened up parking in the other lots. UND and REA still work with the city on traffic plans. They are currently experimenting with a new traffic pattern to try and get people out even quicker. It appears to me that UND and REA provide more parking then is required by the city.

No. UND and the REA do not provide enough parking without the exemption and the other businesses providing the parking. Remember they were allowed to use these businesses parking in their original count. You said though that UND was excempt from parking requirements when I brought it up to start with. I thought I remembered that the city gave them a variance and they had. I do agree with you though that it cost to much for too few users to keep the shuttles going. But since the agreement included bus service for the exemption it still could be argued that they would have to ask the city to be released from that aspect of the agreement. Without the release they would still be technically in violation of the agreement of exemption. I also agree that parking at the Ralph is a lot better than other places. I was at a concert in Chula Vista, Ca. and then in Irvine, Ca. in September (Dave Matthews Band) and you should have seen the mess getting out of those venues. OK it was nice out for walking and the have huge lots but what a mess.
  6. He said that "reasonable parking" was an implied obligation for WHOEVER is selling the ticket. He didn't say college facility. That's why I used 2 professional venues that were close to the Grand Forks area but that I knew had parking issues. I wasn't trying to use comparable arenas in this case. There is ABSOLUTELY NO IMPLIED OBLIGATION FOR REASONABLE PARKING, whatever the hell that even means. The parking situation is very public. If you attend games with any regularity you should know the parking situation. If you don't you aren't paying attention. The building has been open for 12 years. Plenty of parking options have been listed in this thread alone within walking distance.

This is the response I received from the city of Grand Forks dealing with the original parking issue with the Ralph.

"The City and The Ralph came to an agreement through the Detailed Development Plan process that parking would be evaluated a bit differently on the project. The parking requirement for an auditorium is one space per 4 seats. The seating capacity is around 11,400. Therefore the parking requirement is 2,850 for the site. The parking on the site, through shared parking with the bookstore, family practice and other commercial uses around the building, nearly exceeds this amount. In addition, the city required a traffic plan to be completed by a transportation consultant. The intent was to verify that the location of the parking and the affect on the traffic operation plan for the site. UND also identified alternative mode parking (bus pickup locations) on designated lots that provided additional parking for the facility."

So when I said they were given an exemption they were and the city did have the power over the university. Notice the part over the bus picking people up. By stopping the bus service it could be construed that the university is now in violation of their agreement.

  7. Of the venues listed in your argument here, only one is a college facility. A more valid comparison would be Mariucci Arena, Kohl Center, or the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

Try finding a place to park anywhere in downtown Madison or around the campus. Students do not even bring cars to Madison because it is so hard to find parking. The neighborhoods around State St. all require neighborhood parking permits or you get tickets. After that it is parking meters they patrol heavily.
  8. This is pretty funny. I walked the same distance every day in elementary school here in Grand Forks to Lewis and Clark....and I know it was a hike as I lived on the boarder (18th ave south) between the two schools (Viking and Lewis and Clark). I musta started walking the distance in first or second grade...don't remember the exact grade.

And you did not even think twice about it. All your little friends were doing the same thing. Like the kids walking from 17th ave. s and 15th st. to Lewis and Clark everyday. At one time L&C's boundary's were from 18th ave s. and s. 9th st to 17th ave s. and 15th st to Demers to s. 10th st and back to Elks Park. And the kids walked from all corners to school everyday without a whine, even the kindergarteners.
  9. Based on this logic, Wal-Mart could get rid of their on-site parking and replace it with paid RV parking because "we are responsible for getting ourselves there" (taxi, city bus....whatever). :silly: And you would probably plunk down the cash for taxi fare or bus ticket and still shop at Wal-Mart. Well, at least you would have the store to yourself because 99% of the people would not stand for that nonsense. So why should UND hockey fans put up with it? :glare:

Also, how do you think it would work if the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul had very limited on-site parking and people "were responsible for getting themselves there"? Without that big parking ramp connected to the arena, it would be a disaster. But when it comes to UND hockey, it's "just the way it is". ???

This small-time, local-yokel mentality will simply not work in the long-term. We wanted Division I athletics, we got Division I athletics. But unless we want to settle for being "Division I in name only", we had better start solving (or at least start planning to solve) some of these issues.

Parking ramps were in place before the Xcel Center was built.
  10. I have been thinking about this myself. If UND is so cash-strapped, why don't they get rid of the campus-wide shuttles that run 9 months out of the year, 5 days a week (minus Christmas Break, Spring Break and Holidays) because they don't make money and thus are 100% "in the red"? If they can't afford to run shuttles for home hockey games (while charging for ramp parking), how can they afford those weekday shuttles for students? This is yet another 2+2=5 moment that doesn't pass the smell test. But according to some people on this forum, we should just accept whatever explanation is dished out by the suits in Twamley Hall and never, ever question authority. :silly:

As for me, I will continue asking the questions that should be asked. After all, we are all stakeholders here. Right?

I think student fees cover a lot of the cost. Just like the amount of student fees goes to covering the losses of the athletic department. Which also means a lot of students pay a lot of money to them for things they never use. Whereas you guys are making a choice on how you spend your money. And what you get in return for your money.
  11. Wow - 82 Sioux guy sure is a company man - When I got my tickets and an additional donation to the Captains Club, I assumed that along with my ticket I got reasonable parking or the ability to get to the arena without a big hassle. Guess not. I feel that is an implied obligation on behalf of whoever is selling me the ticket. It an operation this big has to subsidize this a little, well so be it. I can't believe that those who do have parking are so callous to those who don't and don't want to walk 5-6 blocks in the winter with kids.

Ironic but when I was kid everyone walked to school any many lived more than 5-6 blocks away. Didn't matter how cold it was. We also went outside at recess no matter how cold it was. Now your kid can not take a little cold? Or is it you that can not take a little cold?
  12. The rates for State Fleet rental is right here. https://www.dot.nd.g.../statefleet.htm Rental rate for a shuttle bus is 28/mile (budget guidlines say 40/mile), so that plus driver pay could easily be $800/bus. They were running at least 3 busses = $2400/night or $4800/weekend.

I know when we rented UND vans for departmental things we paid by the mile for usage. I remember filling out the paperwork when I would drop them off.
  13. Should not the onus of providing the bus service be on either the athletic department or the Ralph? If a department wants to use a UND van for something they have to pay rent and gas on it. So then would not the same thing be applied to either the Ralph or the athletic department instead of the parking office? Biggest issue that I have not seen reading through all the comments on this is the most important one. Why did the city of Grand Forks allow the Ralph to skip the required parking, that others are subject to, based on size of the building? You build an apartment building and you have to have x number of parking spots. You build a commercial building and have to have x number of spots. UND had the land to build the parking but chose the more profitable route of commercial development instead. For some reason I keep thinking that when it was being argued on where to build the Alerus it was said the Bronson property could not be used because there was a codicil that said it could not be used for commercial development. Does anyone else remember that? I think it was UND that said it.

  14. Wow, I bet Kreider is happy he left college early?

I am confused by your comment. I looked and Kreider has played quite a few games already in the NHL. What is the difference between loaning someone to the AHL and assigning them? You covered it a little but could you explain if further for me please.
  15. I am wondering if Notre Dame forced NBCSN to take hockey as a package deal to go with the football rights? This way they can get money for the hockey program from NBC instead of having to use their own finds. I find it hard to believe that ND hockey has as much attraction as ND football. If it did why did they drop the program? From reading siouxforever and yabay8's comments about the CBS contract I agree with them. CBS would have more to gain with more exposure than lose. Most fans would not watch another team on CBS. UND fans will watch a bad internet feed before watching another league game. So then so what if UND was on Fox? We would not be watching CBS anyone.
