  1. When first taking nickname submissions, the committe came up with some attributes that they would evaluate each name on.  These attributes were:

    • Be unique, recognizable, inspiring, and distinctly UND’s;
    • Promote a sense of pride, strength, fierceness, and passion;
    • Be representative of the state and region in a way that honors the traditions and heritage of the past but also looks to the future; and
    • Be a unifying and rallying symbol.

The committe deffinitely should be applauded for doing at least this right.  These are the attributes that I think all of us can agree should be represeted by UNd's new nickname.  Everyone has a right to their own opinion and those fortunate enough will get a vote.  I only ask that when figuring out the name you are going to vote for, take these attributes into consideration.

And you think these 5 nicknames meet these criteria?

  2. IMO the worst part of this whole process was not managing the "no nickname" thing better.     I'm guessing Kelley thought it would just go away as the process played out but it really didn't.   But he should have had the balls to just pull the trigger from the get go and eliminate any chance that it turned into a cause.  Bad mistake.

    Totally agree!

  3. Do you really think the UND administration or NCAA are going subject themselves to the scrutiny they would get for doing something as stupid as telling fans what they can cheer? Twitter, Facebook, etc. would blow up and it would probably make national news! ..and not in a good way!  How would that work for student and/or athlete recruitment? Not happening!

  4. If UND announces that we will go by THE University of North Dakota and some fans continue to use the "Fighting Sioux" on their own without the Universities sanctioning I think that is a free speech case that even Stenehjem couldn't screw up.

To reiterate, I am in favor of choosing a new name if something comes up that makes sense. We just wasted a lot of time and effort and unfortunately the result failed. Rework the process, let Kelly leave and who knows under competent leadership if could happen. Forcing a name that will be hated by well over 50% is not the ideal end result. Time to cut bait for the next round.

    Completely agree!!!

  5. It is curious that it seems that the Sioux Forever crowd seems to be younger fans/college students, and the fans that want UND to select a new name are older.  Sure it's not the case all around, but I have noticed that seems to be about the demographic for each group.  What is intriguing is these college students were barely out of grade school when all this went down 10 years ago.  Many of them may be unaware of the process that has transpired this past 10 years.  Which may be why many of the younger Sioux forever/no nickname supporters are willing to go all in on their beliefs.  They simply do not know all the facts.  Dom I blame them, no.  But they should at least get educated on the entire 10 year process and all that has taken place before making a stance on an issue.  College kids thinking and rationalizing their decisions.......Might be too much to ask!! :)

That's a bold statement. I know quite a few people that attended UND in the 80's that want it to remain North Dakota.

  6. The committee was charged with picking a new nickname. None of the above is not really a choice as a nickname. So, how could it be considered in the top five of nickname choices?

I do agree that Sundogs is a horrible choice, but it is an actual nickname, which qualifies it as such.

I understand your point, but I feel like the committee strung those who wanted ND along. If they felt having ND did not fit the "nickname" criteria, it shouldn't have made the first cut.

  7. They have been straightforward with process as they have went along. The first committee outlined how the second committee would be formed and operate. The second committee followed those guidelines. Not sure where you are getting your info from or claims of misleading the public.

Really, straightforward? You know darn well that ND as an option would have made the top 5! The committee said the most popular would be voted on. I'm pretty sure that if Sundogs had been eliminated, there wouldn't have been this uproar and you know it!!

  8. I hope real ugly!. If this was truly about what the public wants, There is no way "North dakota" is off the list. It is for sure a top 5. Don't tell us this is is going to be a democratic process when it isn't. Shame on the committee for misleading the public. It doesn't matter if you're for North Dakota or want a new name, the public is not really picking the name, the committee is. This is embarrassing....

  9. I was at a store in Northern Minnesota today and I lady said she was a cheerleader in the 70's. I said I was also a cheerleader in the 70's. She asked what my team name was and I said "Roughriders". She said "that's kind of nasty isn't it?". I loved being a Roughrider in the 70's, but today that name has another meaning. All this money spent and time wasted and that's the best we can do?

  10. UND was forced to give up the Fighting Sioux nickname because Standing Rock would not allow the tribe to vote on the issue. Most intelligent people believed that a vote by the tribal members would have been in favor of keeping the name. In today's society the majority no longer matter. What do they know ? The fact that a small minority can dictate what happens just rubs a lot of people the wrong way.

A similar thing is now happening in deciding what to do about a new nickname. Arguably a majority of UND fans would like to continue without a nickname but a small group thinks it knows what is best for all and will not allow that option to be put to a vote. What are they afraid of ? The same thing that Standing Rock was afraid would happen, that the vote would not go the way they wanted.

Exactly!!!! History is repeating itself. Different committee, same behavior. It was that behavior that got us in this mess in the first place!

  11. If Sundogs gets picked, you know the committee decided and the whole thing was rigged. With the comments on here and the comments I've heard around town, Sundogs doesn't have a chance with the public vote! I'd take Gophers over Sundogs!

    Settle down......just kidding!

  12. That is a great question and point.   Five years from now if the NCAA said UND could get their Sioux nickname back due to tribes backing it, should UND stay unique and confident in their decision to be 'North Dakota'?

Come on, the only reason we are dealing with this fiasco is that the nickname that was beloved by most was taken away. If they let us get it back, absolutely we should get back what was taken from us!

  13. To your point, going with just North Dakota or Nodaks would be equally self-depricating, in that UND can't even come up with a real nickname, but can only re-use the state name, or worse yet, can't even use the whole name and have to shorten it to something that will make us look dumb and unimaginative.

I'd rather be talked about for not being able to come up with a nickname than laughed at for being a Sundog!

  14. How in the H E Double Hockey Sticks is North Stars still an option.

    What a shyte show.

Sundogs can also instantly go so there we have it down to 5.

Green Hawks can fly into a window so, gone......down to 4.

Roughriders is as original as an SNL skit....gone......to the 3.

    North Dakota

    Nodak

    Fighting Hawks......

Send em up for a vote.....who gives a shyte. I'll never refer to the teams by it.

Myself, my kids, their kids, and their great great grandkids will have enough Fighting Sioux gear to wear long after they're all enslaved by their PC libtard overlords.

    Yep!
