  1. So, how has UND done VS NDSU this year in sports:

    Mens Cross Country:  NDSU
Womens Cross Country:  NDSU UND (I was confused by the total times and average times not even thinking about scoring based on places
    Womens Soccer:  NDSU

The rest of the games have yet to be played (obviously, early in the school year) and I fully expect that UND will win some and NDSU will win some.  Goes with the territory.  But SO FAR this year:  NDSU leads 3 to 0 2 to 1

    Editted for accuracy.

  2. Hey, Bison trolls, THIS thread!

Hey Mods.  MERGE THE THREADS.  As long as there are things to comment on in the other one I will respond to it.  The logical way to go about doing this is merge the two threads.  HOWEVER this thread was for last years CGD.  The other one was started (by a Bison fan.... I know) for this years CGD visit.

  3. Why was it that they couldn't win when the playing field was level? NDSU was not at any disadvantage compared to other schools. So why were scholarship limits that applied the same to everybody an excuse only for them?

NDSU did a poor job of handling the situation. They were no longer able to stack the depth needed by offering scholarships. Thus some top recruits chose other schools. The other schools capitalized on this and NDSU couldn't overcome it. NDSU failed, UND didn't. It lead to the worst decade in recent ndsu football history.

  4. While all of these are true, you left out that South Carolina absolutely flopped at against A&M and there is no highly ranked match-ups. Everything you stated would completely be overridden in a heartbeat if that was the case. And don't claim sour grapes, the article in the Forum spells out the exact same thing. Fargo has been a nice fallback for them for the second year in a row when there hasn't been a big time game.

Of course the stars had to align, but it looks like they were looking for the opportunity to come here at some point this season.

  5. Lee Fitting: "I keep getting that question why go back, this isn't a novelty or cute story, people keep equating to that, their three time national champion, won 26 in a row and dominating FBS opponents, you're a big time part of the college football landscape, and that's why we're coming back, it's not cute or Fargo or 1-AA school, we're coming back to show the proper respect that this program and community deserve.

Fitting: “It's crazy since we were there last year; we being there put NDSU on the college football fans radar and for instance, Fowler and myself talk each week and we mention the Bison once each GameDay who they're playing, what the record is and how many wins in a row, great for the sport, more attention to the FCS we can bring, that's a win for everyone.”

This is a combination of ‘College GameDay’ meets Wrigley Field meets Champions League soccer intensity,” Fitting said soon after last year’s show concluded. “To see the people on the balconies and hanging out of windows and on the rooftops was something that we never get to experience.”

After the broadcast, Fitting called last year’s stop in Fargo one of the best “GameDay” shows ESPN had ever done. He’s hoping that same excitement can be replicated Saturday.

“North Dakota State is alive on the college football map,” Fitting said. “They have won three national titles in a row. If Alabama won three titles in a row and we went back, no one would be saying anything.”

  6. Exactly!  It is about the story - and one that's as old as show business itself!  It's a classic Carny and Rube story you don't get...(and that's whats MOST funny!)

Imagine a sports network trying to CONSTANTLY stay relevant and make people tune in to a marginal "FAN" show because of the ridiculous amounts of money they make - but only if they can put "asses in the seats" so to speak...you would need some kind of gimmick every week and constantly going back to the major college FB powers week after week, year after year, gets stale...hmmm...how do we freshen up the act?

I know (some espn wonk says) WE TAKE THE CARNIVAL to smaller towns and venues!   Sure they aren't as important in the world of MAJOR college football but going there is a novelty factor.  Fargo has SHOWN they'll turn out for a college football carnival.   Just like when the real carnival rolls in - ALL THE RUBES in Fargo show up and make a big deal about it.  They buy the cotton candy!  They take a ride on the carousel!  3 darts to win a BIG PRIZE - they're all in!  Meanwhile the carnies are laughing all the way to the bank.   Sure winning a giant stuffed rabbit might make you feel like a big man for a night but in the end - what do you really have?  A GIANT stuffed rabbit:-)    ESPN Gameday is ndsu's SUPERBOWL while the carnies laugh all the way to the bank.   Carnies and rubes...carnies and rubes

And that is why OU fans are bitching about gameday coming to NDSU rather than to them when they play the Vols?  We didn't even have that packed of a Gameday set last year and they still chose to come back. I personally welcome the UND fans to attend.  I'd go to Grand Forks if they ever decided to take the show there.  Just one favor, and I don't mean this as a jab, but please show up for a football show wearing football apparel.

  7. Next week they play Incarnate Word, why not come during Montana.

Do you want the honest answer?  It's because they are coming because of NDSU, not the other team.  They are coming because Fargo has been a favorite location of theirs.  They are coming because they had great ratings last year here.  They are coming because in Lee Fittings (paraphrased) words, it was one of the BEST gameday locations they've ever broadcast from.  They are coming because of the fans.

  8. How did UND get any players back in the 90's when NDSU told them come play for us, we have like 7 DII titles where UND has zero. But yet we structured a team to overtake the conference and in 2001 overtook the nation. Sometimes kids play for your school for all sorts of reasons, just saying we have rings, and Gameday may not be enough.  And what will the recruit think if ESPN doesn't come to Fargo, NDSU loses 6 games and fails to make the playoffs and don't win a NC in the recruits 5 years on campus. What do you have left to offer?

Valid points, but something to consider:  D2 cut their scholarship limit pretty drastically around that time making it harder to recruit the top tier (relatively speaking) athletes on the promise of a free education.  What happened to some degree was that the playing field got leveled a bit and a lot of quality athletes opted to attend other schools.  NDSU didn't/couldn't adapt to that.  This ended the Rocky Hager era and brought in Babich.... that took care of most of the rest of the 90's and early 2000's.

Will there be some athletes that want to come to UND/SDSU/UNI/USD/etc...  just to unseat NDSU as the champions?  Absolutely.  And a good salesman (recruiter) should be able to make that sale on occasion.  Not being in the same conference hurts your chances of that happening with semi-local recruits though.

  9. Between the UND performance and the Weber performance this weekend, I'm hesitant to anoint "bottom feeder" status just yet.

Anyone know if the ac can "officially" take recruits to the gameday set or do they need to leave that to the recruits themselves?

No, NDSU can not take recruits there.  They can tell them where it is, how to get there, what bus to get on, where to stand to be on camera, etc.. but they can not take them there for it.

  10. So you are saying that potential FB recruits don't care about academics at all?  Maybe at places like Alabama, Ohio State or Florida State.  But at our level (FCS) players are interested in getting an education because they likely will never make it in the NFL or even the CFL.  One example (not FB, but it's still college athletics) is Jenny Crouse picking UND over NDSU in WBB because UND had aviation and NDSU did not.  NDSU was the three-time defending D-II champion, but thanks to our world-class aviation program, we got a dominant center who helped turn the tide in our WBB rivalry with the Bison.  If you really think FB recruits don't care about academics at all, you are mistaken.

And as for what FB fans watching GameDay next week think, who cares?  They probably think of North Dakota as the dark side of the moon (whether it's UND or NDSU) and thus will turn their noses up at the whole thing.

I can agree 100% with what you are saying.  Sometimes it's more than the sports program, but sometimes the sports program is enough for a recruit to say "I'll get 4-5 years of education for free from them and have an outside chance of going pro".  I'll never fault a player for choosing one school over another for academics, especially when one has a program the other doesn't.  (Aviation, Med, Law for example)

  11. LOL.  Even on their turf and with the success they are having, they still cannot escape the towering shadow of the 7-time NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Champions!!! :p  No wonder their fans have Jan Brady Syndrome when it comes to UND.

In all honesty, I would have been more surprised if they HADN'T known about UND.  These guys do their homework (and at least a couple of them tweet regularly about college hockey as well).  I have no issues with UND Hockey.  Never have..... though I'm not a hockey fan really, but I'm happy when you guys do well in it.

What's more alarming though should be that by saying "it's not hockey season" they are basically acknowledging that UND doesn't have a football program worth mentioning on air.

  12. Question 1:

Why would a Bison-rube like McFeely, on the radio home of the Bison, have a Big Sky official on as a guest at all? Why not a MVFC or Summit or Western Wresting Conference official; why not an official from a conference NDSU is affiliated with?

    Question 2:

How do you know a conference official is being "less than forthcoming"?*

    *Their lips are moving. :D

McFeely as a Bison-rube?  LOL.  DUDE HATES NDSU.  So does Heitkamp.  They are UND guys through and through.

  13. I wonder if, when he was outside of the Fargodome, he ran into someone else denied entry who also happens to be a third class felon known for threatening elected North Dakota officials?

I've seen this referenced a few times [removed]?  If so there is no official record of it on the books in ND.

    http://publicsearch.ndcourts.gov/default.aspx

Now, I do know that he was questioned about some statements he made about/to an elected official but as far as I can tell no charges were ever filed and the inquiry was dropped.

MODERATOR EDIT -- REMEMBER GUYS, NO PERSONAL INFORMATION ABOUT OTHER POSTERS, THANKS.

  14. Those attendance figures through some leans times in there just proves how bogus the accuracy of their counting was. They never were able to count accurately at NDSU. We all remember how they counted at their old field. That was really a joke back then. Laughable.

At the old field, I'd agree. At the dome (at least the past few years) they use electronic scanners to count the tickets and verify that they aren't fake tickets.

  15. Why did he then change his own offer and make it a one game offer, basically putting that offer in rear-view? I will tell you why he first tried the 2015-2017 (both at NDSU) offer. Because UND absolutely cannot do that in 2017, they would only have four home games and start the season with Utah, USD and NDSU. Right.

2015 One-game deal is the only one that can work right now.

Flipping that around, why didn't BF accept the home & home when it was initially offered 2 years ago by GT? Why did it take 2 years?

  16. How is that power? Signing a home/home is something that happens regularly, Faison has been doing it for years with FCS schools. If you had this power you thought you did, you would have been able to get Weber to show up next year plus had someone else come in this year, not have to got to Weber. UND must have similar power since it got to 12 games this year by signing a home/home with Stony Brook and Missouri State. NDSU isn't negotiating from some perceived position of power.

It does. We just killed two birds with one stone. Yes, we have to travel to Weber St for a 12th game.... but we typically don't schedule a 12th game. We don't have to pay them to come here, they don't pay us to go there. Like I said, tune-up game either way. If UND wants to play us in GF wait until 2019 when we have a 12 game schedule again.

You're forgetting that in May 2012 GT told Izzo that the series was close to resuming and due to him talking to the media, Faison got questioned about it and confirmed it was still a home/home. On top of that, Faison accepted GT's offer for a home/home when he made in 2011, though apparently the dates were not settled.

Again, we are going back a couple years to May of 2012. What has happened since May of 2012.... oh yeah, that's right. 2 more national championships. Faison should have pushed harder then if he really wanted it. The dates were there, it sounds like GT was ready to sign off on those dates (or darn close).

The facts are that neither of them got to the point where a formal contract was written/presented. They were jawing back and forth about dates and schedules and whatnot. By the time Faison agreed to the verbal aspects of it, Taylor changed his mind and did not wish to pursue a written agreement. Happens ALL THE TIME in business. I was recently told verbally that I would be awarded the contract for a $2,000,000 IP Camera system. Was told we were low bidders by the General Contractor, was told the contract was coming. It went to one of our competitors instead even though their product wasn't wasn't as good but they were $50,000 cheaper than we were. !@#$ happens.

  17. I hate buyouts (UND got the shaft twice) but on the other hand it was a "business decision" for MSU. I know Bison fans love to use that phrase when talking about GT changing the terms of the home and home with UND, so why can't they accept that on why MSU backed out of the home and home instead of nailing them to the cross?

It was a business decision. It sucked, but we got by.

  18. I actually can't believe this is hard for some to grasp that the football climate has changed since the original offer that Gene sent to UND was made. TWO YEARS LATER and they expect that the offer still stands? What kind of crazy world does UND live in? A two year old verbal offer doesn't mean !@#$. Hell recruits commit/decommit all the time based on verbal agreements. We don't go crying to the media every time that happens.

  19. What "power" is it that FU has to negotiate? GT paid D-2 teams almost $200K to come to Fargo. He signed a home/home with Weber St who is historically a very average football team. Explain to me which part of these deals show this magical power?

He put us in a situation where in 2014 we added a 12th game where we travel to a cupcake for added tune up for the conference play. Next year we get that tune up at home (filled a home spot on the schedule for next year). Now just one more cupcake to go next year since UND doesn't want to take us up on the payday to come here.

We don't have to negotiate to where we have an away game and are left with only 5 home games.

The reason we were over the barrel and pretty much forced to pay Ferris State to come here was because your conference mate bought out rather than play us. It was late in the year already and it was impossible for us to find another FCS team that wanted to come here and/or had room on their schedule.

  20. Ohio State, LSU, Minnesota and Wisconsin do not have interstate rivals, so that is by default. Texas/Texas A&M, Oklahoma/Oklahoma State & Alabama/Auburn are much more fierce and intense rivalries overall. I'll give you MIchigan/Ohio State, but that can definitely be argued by Michigan State. You can talk about "inefficiency" and whatever that means, but in general, the interstate rivalry is much more vicious than any intrastate rivalry in my opinion. In any sport. It's civil war (Oregon/Oregon State).

Texas and Texas A&M no longer play either. Haven't since 2011 if I'm not mistaken.

  21. There you have it. "Cow college logic" at its finest. Of all the ridiculous things you post here, this one has to be up there. And you dont want to schedule UND because it wouldn't be healthy because of the name-calling. When in fact FU and its fanbase will continue to do it like they have been even though we havent been playing in football. So whats the difference? Its obvious to me that most FU fans just want to avoid playing UND at all costs, only because they dont want to chance actually losing the game, like they have in every other sport this year.

You guys called them out as being an awful team. They finished slightly above UND in the Sagarin ratings. Not any worse of a cupcake than you guys.
