Eventually, the high end talent that Boston University, Boston College, & Michigan bring in will end up leading to one of if not more of them ending their title droughts. I would say the same about Minnesota (who usually builds better all around rosters than the aforementioned 3), but they're going to be retooling for a bit after losing a ton from their roster & having some recruiting losses/issues.

This seems like it should be the year for Michigan State to get it done, considering the new talent they have coming in, the talent they have coming back, the elite goaltender (Augustine) who is back. If McKenna commits to the Spartans, it's absolutely national championship or bust for them. They're my favorite for 2026, even if they don't land McKenna.

Unfortunately, this ushers in a new path to winning titles: money. Those who can throw money at players to build their roster will have the advantage. The days of recruiting high-end talent because athletes believed in a program or its development path are over—now it’s all about chasing the almighty dollar.
To me, we’re no longer watching athletes play for the love of the game or personal betterment. Instead, it’s become about pursuing the biggest money grab. Whether this is good or bad, here we are.

Gotta be a local to own one

look at varsity ice house place packed cuz local owns it

only non local that is doing well is BWW and roadhouse

many locals have tried and failed.

  3. Well I guess we will see how this all shakes out but all this NIL money and revenue sharing money these schools have hasn’t gotten them squat yet. At some point these donors are going to be hesitant to keep throwing money in a pit that doesn’t provide any sort of ROI. I don’t care how much money you have.

He’ll play D1 for sure….but I’m not sure if he’ll be a Sioux guy or something like BSU, SCSU etc.

A buddy of mine who’s kid played for a top D6 bantam team said Marto was the top minnkota bantam forward and it really wasn’t even a conversation. That’s including a loaded Moorhead team with Cullen, buttweiler etc. Marto could literally carry the team and they beat Moorhead twice.

Is this Marto related to our former Sioux Jake.

That’s part of the problem. How are we supposed to know as fans that BB just basically stopped recruiting? We had some studs under the Berry tenure. Crazy to think of what could have been if he actually put some effort into it.

This has been the biggest disappointment for me regarding the BB era. I never would have guessed that recruiting would take such a back seat. From the outside, it always felt like we were just missing out on top players due to bad luck, but learning now that our head coach was so disengaged from recruiting is pretty disheartening.

Don’t get me wrong—BB seems like a great guy: friendly, approachable, and well-liked. But this whole recruiting situation has really left a bad taste in my mouth. Like you, I can’t help but wonder what could’ve been with a little more effort.

One thing that’s especially hard to wrap my head around is Jax. He was around during the Hakstol years and continued through the BB era. If he saw the issues with recruiting, did he ever raise those concerns with BB? And if he did, why didn’t anything change? It’s tough to believe he’d stick around if no one was listening. Just a lot of questions—and probably not many answers.

  6. In my opinion Herter would be one of the better options. Not sure if he is ready to move on from Western Michigan, I would think he would, but tough to say what his long term goals are. Does he plan to continue coaching or is he thinking about leaving sometime in the next couple years. You would think if he is thinking strategically, that if he comes to UND and on the chance things don't work out for Jax, he would be the heir apparent to replace Jax. We know he applied for the HC job so he at least was interested in that.

Interesting dynamics with brothers....  perhaps Berry recalled Blais's stance with the Potulny Brothers.  Or a different perspective, the Toews Brothers.  I recall some jibber jabber on her that Jonathan was less than pleased with the UND/David situation & results. Did the program lose a potential ally?

I never hear Toews talk about UND in any capacity. As mentioned when the Hawks won the cup he brought it to Winnipeg but as far as I know, which isn’t much, he had no plan to bring it to GF. Toews is a great player and I hope behind the scenes he has been  an advocate for UND, but it doesn’t appear that he has been. I am sorry and I apologize if I am wrong but that’s very disappointing.

I've heard Ferschweiler say it is $500 million and will be gifted to WMU after it makes money all from one doner.

I mean that is getting into Football US Bank stadium territory. There is no way they are getting a building worth that much. I have a hard time believe one donor let alone multiple would be footing 500 million.

WMUs ‘new arena’ is for MBB, WBB, hockey, and is a city events center.

Cohen said WMU’s new hockey arena is 600 million dollars. There is absolutely no way that is even close to true.

I would like to see Jason Herter. Name him associate head coach and give him a pay bump. He's a proven winner and an alum.

I like that. Don’t know if it would happen, would he want to come to a place here he applied and didn’t get the job only to an associate HC. I guess we will see.

I don’t know. Listen I’m pissed off too. Everything will be okay though. Carle will be gone when Denver gets bounced by Western and Bump will sign after they beat BU in the natty. Everything will be okay. James and Liver are going to be solid. We will add more pieces from the portal. We will be back.

I have no doubt we will be back. I just hope it doesn’t take us more than a couple years. Our fans and alumni and former players will never let this program slip into irrelevance.

  12. Isn't there a ruling coming that would effectively allow schools to pay athletes instead of having collectives etc? It does appear that we perhaps as fans, administration, alumni, have missed the boat on this whole collective and getting money to compete in this new era. This should be a wake up call to fans, alumni and administration that it is time to support and advocate for the collective.

  13. You could tell he was a scrappy player who liked to mix it up. Certainly is disappointing to see him go but from the sounds of it, he may have some anger issues and probably will be for the best.
