Ironically, they chose River Hawks. Seems like the default nickname choice for schools

If you plotted the distribution of nicknames, say, forty years ago versus today, the gravitation toward birds and specifically "Hawks" simply must defy all logic, science, intuition, and explanation.

It's the baddest of bad cliches.  So predictable that it is perhaps unprecedented in the history of humankind.  Paging Dr. Pavlov...

Grand Forks is Hockey town USA, not a soccer town.

Ever driven by Bringewatt Park?  If interest tracks participation as youths age, soccer may someday enjoy more players and fans than football.  A healthy and competitive D1 program is an asset.

  3. Random thoughts about baseball:

    1.  Do you think that UND does the classy thing and gives every player on the roster a 'senior day' sendoff at the end of the year, with the framed jersey, etc.?  Maybe some special fan/alumni events around the last few games at Kraft?

    2.  This week's news is especially disappointing because I, for one, was seriously interested to see what the inaugural Fighting Hawks hat/jersey combo looked like.

Though, it could have been.  In 2013 baseball averaged 128 fans, and that includes an NDSU game.

And even if it wasn't, I think it is pathetic that people are complaining now, when they didn't even support the program (in general, not YOU)

128 sounds awfully generous.  If that's how UND does math, the budget situation makes a lot more sense. ;)

I was one of those.  I actually follow the baseball team closely too.  I stream almost all of their games and was ready to tune in for Jeff Campbell's HR derby for the first round.   When I was in GF, I also attended many games in person.  My opinion is that if we can't fund a sport properly, we shouldn't at all.  The baseball team was playing at a high school field, off campus, with 5.5 scholarships.

To the people who are complaining about this, maybe you should have actually supported the team and gone to games - we wouldn't have cut the program if there was more support.

I don't think attendance was a factor in the decision.

I would love for them to join the NCHC, but I could see the WCHA happening.  I could see them winning less than 5 conference games a year for the first 5 years if they joined the NCHC.  They could probably win at least a few more in the WCHA.

I know there are lots of variables, but wouldn't the addition of a basement dweller pretty much assure that NCHC goes from a four-bid league to three?

Surprising that they cut Men's Baseball after they got the biggest win in program history,

Yeah, Trev Alberts would have at least waited until they won the national championship.

UNO’s wrestling team won its third consecutive national championship on March 12. Hours later, Alberts told Denney by phone that the program was targeted for elimination.

It will be interesting to see if Berry’s hands on “love” the players approach keeps them around longer than Hak’s no nonsense business like approach…

The timing of this comment is utterly fascinating…UNDMHockey earlier tweeted a link to an article at CSNPhilly.com in which Ron Hextall trumpeted Hakstol's treatment of players as a primary reason for his hire.

"Dave treated his players at North Dakota like men, like pros," Hextall said. "So his transition at this level was a lot quicker I think than a lot of guys who are coaching essentially young men or boys, whatever you want to call it. Junior hockey, quite frankly, it's more boys. I like the fact he treated the kids at North Dakota like pros."

  9. Thinking this is a smart move for Athletics, who is going to come out clean on this one.  Get the dirty work done first, ahead of the rest of campus, and in a few weeks when all kinds of budgetary heck breaks loose, their role as the axe-wielding villain will have been forgotten.

  10. Sucks, to say the least. Looking back, those sunny May afternoons at Kraft Field spent shivering under a blanket didn't often make the best memories, although I may always be the hero to my son for when I snared the foul ball, saving him from certain death.  ;)  The persistent "gentle breeze" from the north would often carry lazy balls into the trailer park, while chilling you to the bone.  To the couple dozen die-hards who were there for every game, my sympathies.  You earned my respect and symbolized the heart of Sioux Baseball.  It really was Grand Forks' best ticket that money didn't - or couldn't - buy.

When the new logo is revealed, you can either tip toe the rollout of using it or you can flood the market and embrace it full on and put it all over everything.  I think UND is smart and will do the later.  UND needs to stop being worried about offending the "Sioux Forever " crowd and just embrace it 100% and throw it all out there.

Agree completely re: consumer goods.  The big difference is that team uni's come with a built-in excuse -- cost and delay -- that can be used to mask dissent and displeasure in certain quarters.

I suspect the hockey team jerseys will not display the fighting hawks new logo or name for some time or that any inclusion will be de-emphasized.

Notwithstanding all of the inevitable hype when the logo is announced, THIS will be the ultimate barometer of how UND really feels about SME's work.  If it's a home run, expect it sooner rather than later.  Anything less, you might be right.

I wonder…would it be a Title IX violation to put a crappy logo on the women's jerseys before the men's?

Last year's Penarosa banner is no longer up

Saw that...figured it was just removed from its temporary home for IIHF and will be placed on ice until fall when it finds a permanent home (conference rafter is already full, right?).  Besides, it needed to make room for two newbies up on the showcase beam.

IMHO, making new "historically correct" logo banners would violate the NCAA agreement*, banners with some of those logos probably never actually existed (you're now inventing "history" to serve your wants), and I'd think it would be a Blackhawks licensing problem (vigorously defend your trademark or you will lose it).

*Otherwise, we can create all kinds of reasons to put up Sioux logos all over the place, marking "historically accurate" occasions.

Also, being shortsighted today would be exceptionally awkward (God forbid) 10-15 years from now when the hodgepodge of banners does not yet include a Fighting Hawks logo.

I know many of you won't like it but I think the most-likely result of thinking through the options that are actually available is that we'll be raising eight new interlocking-ND banners next year, or eight banners with a new Fighting Hawks logo.

They were able to do the jersey hallway with all of the historical jerseys. Other than one being in a more public place, the idea behind it doesn't seem all that different.

I am somewhat neutral on banners, but here are some observations:

    1.  I don't think the Blackhawks would have too much of a problem approving a single, static display hanging on the inside of more public areas of REA.  Not like it's going to be sold anywhere, and in context, I can't imagine any legitimate concerns from a legal standpoint.  In fact, it may -- for future generations much more familiar with Chicago than the Sioux -- be a conversation starter about the history of the name/logo at UND.

    2.  I also don't think that the NCAA would put up much of a fight if there was going to be a change -- not merely an addition -- in how the historic logos are represented.  In fact, it could be the product of a little informal horse-trading that advances both parties' agendas.  The bottom line is that the REA will most likely never be 100% "sterile," and even the NCAA is capable of doing the right thing from time-to-time.

    3.  I want to believe that UND will not retroactively apply "ND."  Exhibit A - the Alerus Center.  From an aesthetic point of view, those banners lack more than a little something.  The bland interior doesn't help, but can you picture that in the much warmer environment of the REA?

    4.  Using the Fighting Hawks logo retroactively would be both bold and balls-y…probably depends a lot on how the image is received this summer.

So, city officials must work tirelessly to encourage home and apartment construction, especially by removing any policy obstacles that now stand in developers' way.

At last report, apartment construction had far outpaced demand (as any resident can attest merely by driving around town), and there were emphatic calls to scale it back. Does the GF Herald editorial board even believe the crap it puts out?

  16. I've been drunk, and I've been happy, but I ain't never had the urge to tip over a car.  Would love to know how that scene went down.

At least tell me that it was pedestrian rage, or they knew the owner.  Or that it had a Quinnipiac bumper sticker, or Minnesota plates, or SOMETHING.  But a random Prius parked on a residential street?  WTF.
