  1. I'm more worried about "hitting the wall" towards the end of the season. Players have the same problem when they jump to the pros. Doesn't matter how often the games are, it's the amount.

Of course they're not 65 year old grandpas. Thats just a ridiculous notion. They are FRESHMEN in college, and I don't care how good of shape they are in physically, they will be feeling it mentally.

It's stupid to run these guys into the ground. School starts again this week, they are mentally and physically taxed FRESHMEN. Give them a break!!

I say ask them, but I know they'll undeniably be feeling it. These are crucial games, and I know UND can't afford any more bad games.

I'm just saying, Oshie was injured and didn't return in a MEDAL game. Even if it is minor, why risk it??

I think the team can get 2 wins this weekend, and I'll be up late listening. If they're ready and willing, play them, but I'm just saying I would give them Friday to rest. They've earned it.

  2. ESPECIALLY if Oshie is injured even slightly at that point, I would say don't dress him. These guys deserve their rest. They are really going to be spent, though they may have some adrenaline left. I wouldn't let Oshie play after he left the game. We can't afford to lose him to a more serious injury down the stretch!!!

If any of the others (especially the defensemen) want to dress, I would consider that. However, it's ridiculous how much they played in the last week. Maybe they give them Friday off and let them play Saturday? We'll see.

  3. I don't mean to stir the pot, but....

I get the feeling that was posted in hopes that maybe there is a kink in Kessel's armour (Canadian spelling). Like maybe if he's got at least something wrong with him it'll make him, or the gophers, look bad. I don't know why that is newsworthy. Maybe the Canadian press wants to show that the Americans have problems. Kind of lame if you ask me, because we all know that the Americans are playing a pretty decent game.

This really isn't the type of bickering I like to read from this board. No fun if you ask me. Kessel is a great player, someone who makes those around him better. Saying he is disliked doesn't change any of that.

It wasn't wrong to post, however, because it was in the news about the tourney. I guess it's very appropriate.

Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas... Peace to you all, enjoy the tourney! ;)

  4. I think some of the D is a matter of you get what you can get when you can get it. Certainly the complexion of the D has changed over the past few years. We had a very intimidating D the last few years, and it nearly brought home a championship last spring. But I remember often wishing we had more offensive ability in that group. This year we certainly have more offensive ability, and we are less physically intimidating, but I'm hoping some of that physical play will pick up as guys get more acclimated to college hockey.

I believe we heard Blais comment from time to time on big time offensive defensemen that went elsewhere, that he tried to get. It happens to every coach...losing a player you'd like to get. Blais also said that really good offensive D are not a dime a dozen so you don't always have a chance to get one when you need or want one.

It could be there were better offensive defensemen available that the Sioux could land this year and that is why there appears to be such a stark contrast. Finley could yet be one of those physically imposing players. Time will tell.

I, too, hope to see some more intimidation in the D corp. Reading other boards and the papers it appears even Lucia wants that, but he hasn't really found one yet. Not ripping Lucia, but using this as an example. It's not always easy to find a 6' 2"+ 210# defenseman that can skate as well as Sioux coaches want, can make a good outlet pass, not panic with the puck, and are smart enough to play well positionally.

Hopefully the coaches will be able to find the right blend.

I think there's a pretty large rift between those two skills (offensive talent and intimidation). Basically it amounts to this...and I am just throwing this out there.

A big bruising defenseman without offensive talent will remain a big bruising defenseman. However finesse is something you grow up with, and you can beat those kids around until they learn to hit back. Then the finesse player who can now hit puts on some muscle, and you've got a good all around defenseman. :D

This is rather crude, but my point is that if you're looking for offense from your defensemen you need to find someone with that particular talent. It's easier to teach the finesse players to hit than it is to teach the hitters to score.

As Sagard said, though, it really is about getting those young guys experience. He pretty much hit it on the head. No matter how a defenseman comes into a program they can learn a lot through the years. Perhaps they can even develop a mean streak.

On the contrary to my point, Hak taught Greene to score last year, so I guess anything's possible.

  5. The crazy thing about that UM/UW series is that in the last 10 games at the John the Gophers held a 10-0 advantage. THAT'S NOT A TYPO!!! 10 to 0!!!

Wisconsin, at this point, is as good as and better than anyone in the NCAA.

HOWEVER, don't expect them to rocket to the finals without a fight.

This weekend was great for UND in terms of league standings. All the right teams lost. UM/CC/St. Cloud

KUDOS also to UAA, who after getting shutout in the great white north, came back to win 2-1 tonight!! UND gained a good amount these last few series, standings and stats-wise.

  6. I'll check it out. I have it hanging in my living room along with some of his other Sioux hockey works. He got two commissions from UND to paint them, one in '87, and one in '96. You used to be able to see them hanging in the lobby of the old Ralph, but with the move, they either got left out or moved to some office somewhere in there. He did paint the portrait of Betty Engelstad hanging in her branch of the complex.

Anyway, a lot of his prints were destroyed in the flood. As far as what it's going for...I think some places around town have them, but it's been years since I've checked. I believe most of the "Dream Team" painting was taken from photographs, so if you find the team picture you can put faces with names.

  7. I like the way the NHL did this. IE: the "All-Star weekend".

Those guys have a lot of pressure on them, and are going to be in a certain state of mind that week. Even though they get to see the sights and enjoy the day, why would they want to be, perhaps, "teammates" with the enemy in a skills challenge. Maybe they don't want to be dead serious the whole time...but I know I would have a weird feeling about a foot race with an opposing forward the day before the big game. Also, goalies are wacked out of their skull as is, now the best shooter from the next game will have an early shot at finding your soft spot.

Don't get me wrong, I love this idea!! It should be a great display for this level, and the sport we love. However doing it so close to the most important game of the year is ill-advised. Why not do it during the holiday break, or any other time of year?

  8. Where did that guy get his info???

What we lost in SIZE in Greene we made up in Finley...and then some. Smaby and his 6'5" frame is still around and he has gained strength. The rest of those guys weren't ultra intimidating size-wise, and with a little WCHA conditioning the newbs will be just as tenacious as they were. Apparently reputation carries a lot of weight.

Just you wait, Wisconsin will be running from gorillas again very soon!!

  9. Yes, UND got MASSIVELY out hustled tonight. However, Lammy must have been pretty damn rusty. He goes down quicker than a....well you know. I can show you on slow motion replay how he ALWAYS made the first move tonight. He is a really good goalie, and I'm sure he knows this was an "off" night. The important thing is rebounding. Denver knows Mannino is the man for them, Parise is the man for us. It has been proven. It's just really unfortunate that the team played poorly in front of Lammy.

On the other hand, congrats to Chorney who scored his first as a Sioux tonight.

I would rather lose friday and regain momentum on saturday if we were to split. I'm sure Hakstol will give 'em an earful about how important BOTH games are in a weekend. Forget a crappy Saturday, bring on the RED, big games next weekend.

  10. If the Caps were wise, they'd allow Finley to play all four years at UND and then send him for a year at the AHL level before even thinking about having him suit up for the Caps.

If the Caps were wise...or if UND is REALLY lucky?? :)

Seriously I'd add Chorney to the list of people who are performing better than expected. Considering the hype Lee got, I think Chorney was an extremely pleasant surprise.

All in all Finley has been a quality rook. He does move well, and is smart. My only knock is that he doesn't use his size extremely well yet (probably to avoid penalties) and that he has had a couple lapses of judgment. He'll be a stud, and IF WE'RE REALLY LUCKY a 4 year player. He was a first rounder remember.

  11. It's ultra easy. Call the ticketmaster number, they'll give you $12 standing room tickets (most likely). I've done that every time, and it's pretty fun.

For standing room, you actually do stand, but it's an awesome vantage point.

I've called less than a week in advance and gotten them. Amazing for such a small place.

  12. Awesome answer, but unfortunately not what the judges were looking for.

Seriously, though....only regular season matchups, I want to say UND is undefeated on CSTV. I am probably wrong, but let's see...

    BC at UND 6-3 W

    UM at UND 7-2 W (a guess)

    UND at Maine 4-3 W

    UND at UNH 3-2 W

What else? It's impressive none the less...I've got a cookie... :)

  13. Another couple comments not really game related...

I was going ADD at Senser's tonight. They changed that place A TON since I was there last. There are many more big screens, and the place is more open to see them. GREAT JOB! Be sure to take that in if you can't make a game.

Also, FOR ALL YOU STAT HOUNDS...what is UND's record in CSTV televised games? I seem to recall quite the good record. Kudos to the person who finds the answer.

  14. Something that hasn't been said yet is one of the BIG reasons that UND scored goals tonight...

    Somebody went to the net!!!!

Goal 1: Oshie went through many people to find that puck, no matter what happened for UNH, TJ should never have had that chance.

Goal 2: Zajac used GREAT speed to extend both defenders and back them up, allowing Stafford to take the drop pass and dance to the keeper's left and get him down for the easy put-in

Goal 3: Lee charged in against the goalie drawing both D men with him, which allowed Toews to sneak in (uncovered) for the point blank shot.

Those are my stars of the game consequently. OH YEAH! JPAR is a STUD!

  15. I'll be at the Senser's in Bloomington along with a couple friends. You can be sure there will be plenty of Sioux fans there to support at least a few of their big screens for the game.

The one in Roseville will most likely carry it, but I can't say for sure as I've never been there.

  16. Largely, I agree with the two analyses. Lee wasn't as solid tonight as he has been. He was slightly off. There was one time Lee tried to step into a forward on the point, but the puck (and the man) slipped past him giving the guy a breakaway. Fortunately, Chorney got to show us his great closing speed. He completely tracked down the guy, and rubbed him off the puck. There was a penalty called, but Chorney's play was outstanding.

UAF/UM really surprised me. MN must have a ways to go, all comments aside. It is early in the season, and I don't expect this play to continue from them.

Though I believe they got outworked tonight...a sweep is a sweep, and those are two good wins leading into another tough road weekend.

I'll be watching on Friday and listening on Saturday. Go Sioux!

  17. I remember hearing that the UNH game on Friday would be on CSTV. Is it right to assume that Sensers will have the game? Is there any possible chance I can spend more money there on Saturday for the other game as well? Thanks for your help, Cheesemover. I've enjoyed Sensers many times in the last few years. The wings are great, and there's always a loyal following of Sioux fans!

  18. Though I SAW nothing, what I heard in spurts wasn't so horrible. Aside from another ton of penalties and one bad stretch in the 2nd this was slightly less dominating than last game. I didn't hear any shot numbers, but it sounds like we had a few chances. TH said not a whole lot of quality ones, though. I'm impressed by Oshie. He seems to have had something going...though he didn't put any of them up, but that's more than some can say. Lee sounded great in this game.

Keep in mind I heard bits and pieces throughout the game as I was working. I would listen for stretches, then get back to work. There was one bad 5-10 mins in the second, and that's about it.

Let's rally against Northeastern next weekend, get the sweep, and start chemically bonding...or something along those lines.
