Losing Golladay was the final nail in the coffin. What in the world! This is beyond "normal" for when a coach leaves! Basically a mass exodus....
I'm honestly really disappointed. I want DoBoer, he can build a NC program. Bubba will "work" too
-
Bubba will put in place a good defense, which will ultimately allow this team to be more successful than any teams Mussman put together.
With that said, how can you not want DeBoer!! As head coach, he lost as many games as national champions he won!! That's really impressive on any level! Plus he knows how to beat upper competition (UND in 2009)!! This is an example of a guy who has "it" !!
-
Both guys present positives:
Bubba is a defensive minded guy from this state. Has UND and regional ties.
DoBoer has an excellent head coaching record and possesses that mindset we need to knockoff ranked teams and FBS teams. Heck, he used that attitude to play spoiler against us!
I think Bubba gets the job, but I'd like to see new blood in the program with DoBoer. Plus the attitude transformation that is required to beat the "big boys" would come with DoBoer.

Tyrhe Ivery, RJ McGill, Aeron Carr, Anthony Fletcher, Casey Young, Jake Disterhaupt, Roman Bridges. There are a lot more quality athletes at wr. If Kenny leaves we'll be fine, just not as good.
Golladay had by far the most pure talent on the team; a team that went 3-8! Losing Golladay will hurt significantly. Thankfully this team can't get much worse. Only direction to go is up!
-
The "would be fine" part is what I'm hearing more and more around here and that's disappointing. This program went into a total tailspin with Muss and I guess I was looking for more with this hire than (insert name) "would be fine".
But I guess it is what it is.........
It's become the reality of DI UND football. It's been hard for some people to accept, including myself.
Now, with UND non-hockey sports, I'm afraid the expectations are to try produce a high-quality product using average-quality resources.
Need to have faith each and every season that UND football will be tremendously efficient.
-
The more I think about, either DeBoer or Schweigert would be fine. Flip a coin! They have gained valuable experience in the Missouri Valley Football Conference and have had success as head coaches, with DoBoer having the most.
Once the head coach is hired, the most interesting aspect that comes to play will be the coaching staff that is hired. Both have probably made connections in the MVFC and I doubt they would be opposed to seeing if they could pull someone else's coordinator/position coach away from them. For example, if Bubba is hired, maybe he calls some OCs that he's been impressed with from the MVFC, or DoBoer would do the same for DCs. It's certainly a possibility, and if the assistant coaching salary has been raised enough, UND could get some quality coordinators to accompany Bubba or DeBoer.
-
I just want a guy that has leadership and the ability to recruit. I'd say both Schweigert and DeBoer know how to win championships since they've done it as a coordinator and head coach, respectively. Then again, we had our other coordinator from 2001 takeover the program and look how that turned out. For that reason I'm starting to lean towards DeBoer since he won titles as a head coach. I still would prefer a surprise hire of someone with FBS experience, but doesn't look like that'll happen.
-
Pretty hard for a coach who isn't hired yet to convince people to stay.
So we need a slam dunk hire that will that BRING IN (recruits and transfers over the years) more talent than we have lost/will lose.
-
Guys that can coach don't have to have FBS or NFL experience to be good. Good, Great and Bad coaches work at all levels of football. I really don't understand why people don't get it. Art Briles stepped out of HS and built UH back into a winning program. Kevin Sumlin is good but a lot his success is due to what Briles did before him. Gus Malzahn seems to be doing OK and it wasn't long ago he was a HS coach that was given a chance. Brian Kelly is a great coach that someone had to take a shot on at one point or another because he was just a very successful D2 coach.
I am not saying he would or would not be a good DC but I do know that you have zero idea.
Where have you been the past five years? Yes there are exceptions, but DI experience is very crucial. DI is a different animal compared to DII, not just on the field but off it in terms of recruiting competition. To think all coaches work at all levels..that's an incredibly ignorant statement. You think a long time winning high school coach in North Dakota could do wonders at UND? I'll give you the answer: No.
Malzahn coached for a long time at a high school in Arkansas, where high school football is a lot more intense than around here, and he had long term success. Than he went to OC and won a NC before getting a HC job.
Kelly is not a good example for your point at all. He did the common ladder climb like most coaches. Grand Valley State assistant, then Grand Valley HC, and then jump to FBS HC at Central Michigan - be comparable to DeBoer if he gets the job.
-
Bubba use to be a NAIA defensive coordinator too.
Yeah, and then he went DII coordinator, DII head coach, and DI FCS coordinator....
Bottom line is Bubba is way more experienced than Morrell. If Morrell comes in as position coach, then I'm fine with it, but not defensive coordinator.
We're not DII anymore!! If you want to hire local boys with minimal to no DI experience all the time, then UND football will stay right where it has been - a mediocre FCS team. Need proven leaders and recruiters at the DI LEVEL. The proof is all around the country if anyone cares to look. For example, one institution is just 70 miles south.

We waited too long...
Considering how talented Golladay is, if he is actually leaving it will be a HUGE loss. Losing Hardin (of course to graduation) Jackson and Golladay in the same offseason will take the WR position from a strength to a questionable position group. This hire better be a home run or else this process has been just as ridiculous as the football program in general over the past 5 years.
-
I see Morrell runs the 3-4 defense as well.
Morrell has coached at Sioux Falls and Montana Tech......
If he's hired as DC, that's plain ridiculous. Never mind FBS experience, he doesn't even have FCS experience. I'd rather have Kotelnicki at DC than Morrell.
Edit: I see he coached one season for USD as defensive coordinator in 2009. That still makes for a weak resume. If DeBoer gets the job, hopefully he has more qualified connections than just his USF buddies.

Of course all sexual assaults can't be stopped; however, that doesn't mean a college and its programs aren't obligated to deal with them in the most effective manner and to do what they can to prevent them. Title IX requires it. If students file complaints with the federal government schools are sued and held financially responsible. So the question that always needs to be asked when sexual assaults occurre is how were they handled and what did the school do to prevent them from occurring. You might not like it, but that is the legal framework a school has to operate within. As far as I can tell, Pflugrad didn't do a particularly good job handling the issue, and I haven't seen anything from him that suggests that he would do anything different if a similar event occurred. Absent that a college would be putting itself at risk if they hired him.
You're claiming I don't like that coaches and administrators have to report inappropriate behavior and intervene to the best of their abilities? That is common sense administrative policy, so not only do I "like it", but I agree with it. Nevertheless, there's always a risk when you hire someone, certain individuals moreso than others. I believe some, including yourself, are associating Pflugrad with a greater risk than what actually exists. If he does get a second chance to be a head coach, you'll see zero administrative faults on his part, particularly when it comes to following disciplinary policies and communicating with administrators.
-
Or take DeBoer as HC and hope he can get Chuck Morrell to leave Montana Tech to be DC.
Morrell didn't have much success at Montana Tech this past season; went 3-7.

The good Lord knows I'm not the smartest guy when it comes to football nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but I am really disappointed with this whole process and the glaring fact that our AD didn't really have a solid short list for our football team's open coaching position. To pour some more gas on it, 3 games into the last season we are getting destroyed by the normal, year in-year out competition of the Big Sky and our AD only has Bubba and DeBoer on his list at the end of the season??? Seriously, if this doesn't scare the hell out of you, then I'm not sure you have a heartbeat..."Why could we have not gotten some real coaching talent from this ridiculous hiring process?" should be the $64k question in my mind.
Cue up the laughter in FUville.
This hire with assess Faison's competence as AD in my opinion.

According to http://dailyegyptian...iu-salary-data/
Schweigert makes approximately $87,000 a year at SIU. Would be smart to only offer him around a $150,000 base salary with incentives that could potentially take him over $200,000. Let the saved value be distributed to the assistants, so we can hire quality DI offensive assistants to accompany Schweigert and presumably Schmidt.
Also, considering Kalen DeBoer makes approximately $68,500 a year, is it possible he could be hired as offensive coordinator for Schweigert? Pay $150k for Schweigert and somehow get $80k for DoBoer? Maybe a slight possibility…
From Hambone:
I do have to wonder, with the potential salaries we could pay our assistants, if DeBoer would potentially be able to bring Bubba along as D Coordinator (or vice versa). I still like the potential of having Todd Hoffner as a potential OC though. Wonder if we would have DeBoer as HC, Bubba as DC and Hoffner as OC? Thoughts on that lineup?
Given their current salaries, more likely Schweigert gets head job and DeBoer gets offensive coordinator if you want them both.

I agree...a "national search" with Faison's "vast network", as some have called it, gives us 1) Bubba and 1A) DoBoer as contenders to become the new HC of this FB program.
And Pflu was sent out to sea by the HR dept................
I agree either DeBoer or Schweigert would be somewhat disappointing hires given the title "national" search, but we have to deal with what we can get I suppose. The biggest factor could really be the increase in assistant's salaries - that could allow for experienced assistants to be hired, not just former players.

Sorry but I don't think it's fair to Jake to compare him to Chappell. Reason number 1. Chappell ran a 10.54 100M in highschool, I'm not sure if Jake even ran a 10.9 100M. Chappell was also 200 lbs, Jake is the slightest RB I've ever seen at UND. Chappell did quite well against the legit D1 teams he played against (13 ypc avg at #5 UNI, 11.3 ypc at SUU with a 73 yard TD run) and was faster than anyone we've had in D1 anyway so I'm not sure how he wouldn't have had similar success. I know I pimp Chappell like none other but he was a once in a generation talent and we only got two years to see him play, Jake is just a run of the mill athlete.
I think saying Chappell was 200 lbs is a bit of push, but not too far off I suppose. Anyways, you have to consider the offensive lines of UND when Chappell played. They were far more physical than what UND had to offer Jake Miller, which is really discouraging since UND was DI and had their former O-line coach as head coach. Regardless, I'm not trying to endorse Miller. His size and strength were not good enough for DI runningback.

Don't forget the progression made by Marcus Hendrickson from that game at Montana to his first start against PSU. Night and day would be an understatement. These kids were FR and were given way too much on their plate with a !@#$ OL. They'll be much better next year and the year after that and the year after that.
If Mollberg and Bartels both continue to play musical chairs quarterback over the years, then UND won't be successful. Need to pick one and let the other one go his separate way, because I doubt either one of them wants to be a three year backup.

Of course it isn't up to the coach to implement sexual assault policies for the campus. But when there were huge problems on his team, he didn't do much of anything about it. In the same way Hakstal made all of his team members attend alcohol education classes after last year's incident, it seems reasonable to expect a coach to do something similar. There were clearly far larger problems at Montana from the police to top level of admins. That, however, doesn't change the fact that there were problems on the football team and Pflugrad didn't seem overly concerned by it.
I've read a lot of articles trying to find something where Pflugrad acknowledges a problem and/or says what he did about it. I haven't found anything that puts him in a positive light. His responses seem overly defensive. I stand by my original claim, with the information that is available, an AD would be crazy to take a chance with him.
In my opinion, your claims are unrealistic and biased. There's only so much a head football coach can do on and off a campus. Yes, there are programs that could've been initiated to try and combat the issue at hand, but even that is no guarantee to work. For example, education programs on sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), such as AIDS, have nationally existed now for decades and STDs are certainly still a problem. Albeit STD transmission is not always associated with a crime, the same principal exists in that education problems do not lead to entire eradication.
I hope you are just trying to make sense of why Pflugrad is not being considered at UND, or taking the stance you are taking for argument's sake, because otherwise you are shining an unnecessary, wrongful light on Pflugrad. There's only so much a coach can do. By no means did Pflugrad meaningly promote asexual assault or compliance incoherence. Some things are out of people's hands, whether you like to believe or not. In my opinion, Pflugrad deserves a second chance and it should be with UND. With that said, I don't think he ends up here.

You are comparing Chappel to Miller?
Yes, both are North Dakota products with similar attributes in my opinion.
-
I really don't know how you can argue against Dressler and Hardin. They are the top two in both numbers and talent, in my opinion. Now, head-to-head, I'd take Dressler. The deciding factor being he was on winning teams and he is tearing it up in the CFL. Next year, it'll be the NFL.
He is negotiating a deal with a NFL team. The team name hasn't been released, but I'd like to speculate it is New England. Could use Weston in a "Wes Welker role" and he'd put up big numbers.
-
Speaking of Chapel...how good could he have been?
On pure talent...probably top 10 player to come to UND in the last 25 years.
Answer to this thread...Dressler and it really isn't close IMO.
Chapel was a track star on the football field. He was a good DII back with his speed and the impressive OLs UND had at the time, but I don't think he would've been very effective at the DI level. For example, if Jake Miller was playing 7 years ago against DII teams and had a better O-line, he would've consistently ran for over 150 yds/game too.

Yeah, and Golladay will be playing on Sundays...
Why would we ever want to recruit someone like that?
