So, did USD remove us from their 2012 schedule for Colgate, or is the one open date mentioned in the article where we used to reside? If they still have an open date, why aren't we trying to fill it instead of playing Mines?

Good debate. While I understand the hesitancy to shell out 100-150K to bring in a lower level FCS team in favor of a regional opponent that will cost less and draw the same-size crowd, I don't understand why we can't play South Dakota, which would be a D-I game against a regional opponent and draw a good crowd (in GF or Vermillion). They were on the schedule for 2012 before we were invited to the MVFC and Big Sky. One of us had to drop that game. Who and why?
-
Are we sure this will be the only repercussion? Will we lose the ability to play Minnesota, Wisconsin and others in non-league games? Will we be banned from post-season appearances completely by a punitive NCAA? Will enough teams in the Big Sky, who thought this issue was behind us, object? Will there be a costly legal battle that will drag on in the media and minds of recruits for several years? Will it be a distraction for recruits? The answer to all these may be "no" or some may not like the questons, but these are fair questions.

It won't be Las Vegas. Sin City already hosts three post-season conference tournaments. They don't have the venues or desire to host a fourth.

Correction: Douple hates UND like Satan hates Jesus.

Ouch! Hopefully that 2012-13 number will be significantly higher, and out years beyond that backup into the early 2000s range or better. 2010-11 -- 1,626 2009-10

If someone has the time to do this, I would find it very interesting and helpful.

I don't believe Kelley will "unilaterally" choose the new nickname. Kelley, like most university presidents, is a politician and will try to build consensus (as much as one can on an issue like this). A committee will be formed, float a few suggestions, then make a recommendation, which Kelley will likely approve. Will everyone be happy in the end? Of course, not. But it won't be because Kelley picked the new nickname. It will be a committee recommendation.

Actually, I don't think we're that far off. We have some good young players who should be ready to compete in the Big Sky. And the Big Sky bid, plus the fact we'll be post-season eligible soon, is going to really help recruiting -- already has, in fact! If we have another strong recruiting class to follow on this one, then look for us to be in the post-season mix soon after we start Big Sky play.

Agree the season is broken out into those three parts. We should be 4-2 after you factor in the FBS, non-FCS and non-scholarship (Drake) teams. That means the season turns with how we do against Great West teams and UNC. Right now, most of those could go either way....in large part depending on whether or not we find a quarterback. So, realistically we could go anywhere from 4-7 to 9-2. I think we'll be around 6-5. Division II/NAIA/Non-schoarships Drake - Win Black Hills -- Win Montana Western -- Win Sioux Falls-- Win FBS Idaho -- Loss (Idaho has a lot coming back and if they find a QB will be better than last year) Fresno State -- Loss (a lot to ask to win out there) FCS Southern Utah -- probably toughest of our FCS games Cal Poly Northern Colorado UC Davis South Dakota

It makes an incredible amount of sense to keep the UND-USD series alive, in all sports. Not only are we similar, peer universities in adjoining states, it will bring bigger crowds, less travel costs, better exposure in the Dakotas for both programs, and many other advantages And we could replace the Sitting Bull trophy with something like SDSU and NDSU have in the Dakota Marker. Everyone wins! When it comes to FB, I'd love to see our 8-game Big Sky scheduled supplemented with annual games with USD and NDSU.
-
Ok, I guess that makes sense. If you're trying to attract someone from outside the NCAA (from the NAIA) they want to be more encouraging. With all the teams leaving the NAIA for D-II, I wonder what will ultimately become of the NAIA. Can't imagine they can continue having two divisions for some sports that much longer.

The Cougars, who are not eligible for NCAA postseason play until 2012 when they begin a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schedule............. Why is there only a one year transition from NAIA to DII but four years from DII to DI?

It's listed here for Sept. 7: http://wiki.siouxspo...l/2013_schedule and in this news release: http://www.fightingsioux.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=58640&SPID=6399&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=13500&ATCLID=204929801

University of Idaho peer institutions. http://www.ucm.uidah....aspx?pid=86019 · Colorado State University · Iowa State University · Kansas State University · Michigan State University · Montana State University - Bozeman · New Mexico State University - Main Campus · Oklahoma State University - Main Campus · Oregon State University · Texas Tech University · University of Arizona · University of Arkansas - Main Campus · University of California-Davis · University of Nebraska at Lincoln · University of Nevada-Reno · University of Wyoming · Utah State University · Washington State University You can quibble over athletic vs. academic peer institutions but either way Idaho really is bothered that the Big Sky now is comprised of so many Carneige lower-tier, "directional" institutions. In recent years, since Idaho left the Big Sky, they've added Southern Utah, Northern Colorado, Sacramento State, and Portland State. If they felt they'd outgrown the Big Sky before, the addition of these institutions has only reduced the BSC's image further in their eyes. Even Eastern Washington joined less than a decade before Idaho left. Meahwnile, old rivals Nevada and Boise State have moved on to become successful, Top 25 FBS teams. UND's presence helps the Big Sky's image somewhat, as would have USD's, but not nearly enough for it to overcome it's current image to Idaho fans.

If you think the reaction to our schedule has been filled with vitriol, you outta hear what they're saying in California about UC Berkeley's announcement yesterday that they will host tiny Presbyterian College this fall: http://www.sfgate.co.../SPVD1HNJ41.DTL Check out the Comments section.

Is it completely out of the question that our athletic department might be arranging for a swap that would bring in at least one better game in 2011? Perhaps a tradout for the Montana Western game? It seems like even the FBS teams are a bit fluid -- witness the current effort for Nevada to abandon their game with Boise State next year, or the changes with TCU's schedule. Could it still be possible we'll have at least one change to our schedule? Or is it too late to really expect anything to change?

No "point," just showing Minot State is upgrading their schedule all around so MSU-Bozeman type games will be part of their future. If UND plays a D-II team in the future, as do most BSC teams, it's possible Minot will be on our schedule too (although I hope we try to pack our non-leaguers with NDSU, USD, etc....). “The 2011 schedule isn't necessarily indicative of what the future holds,” said MSU Athletic Director Rick Hedberg. “Being an independent is difficult no matter where you are located, but for us in North Dakota, it's really tough. Joining the NSIC in 2012-13 will allow us more consistency in scheduling and guarantee us five or more home dates in football.” The Beavers are tentatively scheduled to begin NSIC play in football in the 2012 season.
