After what certainly felt like a rough patch all the way around for UND hockey, loving all of the positive news for future and past UND alums. Wishing Kleven and Malone tons of future success!

The speculation is fun and as someone mentioned obviously great for clickbait and excitement. But seems to me all signs are pointing at him being very much undecided. I’ll take some comfort in UND having been linked early on as a top contender, and no reason to believe he’s ruled it out. Even if the recent mention of two more schools to visit is true, that doesn’t mean he didn’t already visit some schools who are still in the running as well.
Should be fun to watch, but definitely feeling better about UND’s chances after recently loading up with some top talent. And also feeling better that we’ll be fine either way even if McKenna does land somewhere else.

Hindsight is always an interesting thing. There’s probably a lesson here for many of us… it wasn’t that long ago when some were wholeheartedly defending Barry and challenging anyone who suggested that recruiting, team morale, and effort weren’t where they needed to be. The forum was divisive and split. That whole debate about whether UND was sinking toward mediocrity and if anyone else could lead the team in a better direction. And just earlier today, some were still arguing against landing these recruits or them coming in this year. Not calling others out for this, just something we’ve all been guilty of from time to time and can learn from.
We certainly don’t know what the product on the ice will look like, but it’s been very energizing to see how quickly UND could bounce back into being a national player again. This staff definitely has edge and drive that seemed lacking, and I’m relieved the damage was short term. I can’t wait to see how all of this builds into the product on the ice and future rosters. Look out!

I heard BC offered him 100k from a source that is wrong more than he is right. Considering he recently followed UND, he must have significant interest. I know I would not follow a team for no reason.
Here’s hoping we don’t start to see a lot more “competing interest” just to drive up the NIL offers in this new landscape. Not saying that’s happening here, just occurred to me some will be trying to create bidding wars. Still recall UND being used as a threat for some prospective targets to manipulate the draft by their preferred CHL team. Strange new world…

Well I guess we will see how this all shakes out but all this NIL money and revenue sharing money these schools have hasn’t gotten them squat yet. At some point these donors are going to be hesitant to keep throwing money in a pit that doesn’t provide any sort of ROI. I don’t care how much money you have.
Guess it depends on how you define success. A lot of these loaded teams are doing well and making the tournament, and sometimes the frozen four. Add on that they get to watch future superstars all season play incredibly entertaining hockey along the way, and I wouldn’t say that they are getting nothing for their investment.
I’m sure some of them expect to be in the running for a championship every year when they load up like this, but associating these top superstars with your school has a huge lasting effect. I, for one, would take watching elite studs do things only top players can do while competing all the way up to a championship, even if they don’t win it every year. Obviously every dimension is a whole lot better than what we’ve been seeing lately...

Plenty of defensible reasons to argue against home ice regionals…and he picks THIS to try to prove his point? Embarrassing for him.

Sandy is also now official. Hobie is gone.
Feel for the kid. Too good to be a third-string but not quite able to put it together as a starter, even after putting in the time. Tough to develop when you don’t get reps. Best bet may be a less competitive league where he can become the go-to guy…wouldn’t be surprised to see him develop quickly in the right situation.

It’s probably because the guy running the collective is using it as a side gig to his state government job and running toasted frog and Bonzer’s… Any school serious about NIL has a full time staff running their collective. 1883 is a joke. Might be time for someone else to step up with some financial backing to put together something legit.
Agree on having more dedicated oversight and taking it to the next level. Unless I’m missing something though, seems we owe them our thanks for taking on this unpaid work in addition to everything else on their plate? Without the 1883, we’d have no NIL presence and I don’t believe they’re stopping anyone else from stepping up.
I’m guessing they’d gladly welcome volunteers from everyone here complaining the 1883 should be doing more. Since I’m not helping from Seattle (yet, at least), I’ll try not to complain. That said, if you’re paying attention (1883)…it would help to get some transparency and communication on the effort and where you face challenges or need help.

There were signs. All coaches on the bench every game. Not winning many of the highly contested recruiting battles. What the recruits did (and didn’t) say about their experience - ie, no mention of how committed the coaches were to landing them (things we heard regularly under Hakstol), portal goalie U, and the overall drop in quality. Remember how Hak landed Boeser from Wisconsin. That level of commitment vs. convenience matters. Singular incident, but does BB get put on a championship pedestal his first year without Boeser?
Some on here have been calling these things out for years. This part is pure speculation but I wonder if Brad took the Covid switch to zoom etc like many companies- began relying on virtual meetings for interviews, scouting, follow-up, etc. If one coach shows up to your house and games regularly pumping you up and building a relationship with your family, while another is more apt to setup zoom meetings and relying on YouTube selling your facilities, outside of you making a visit on your own dime …I know I’d draw my own conclusions.
Other areas like discipline, playing soft, not getting player progression year over year, etc. that many have been pushing on as signs to move on from BB have also been directly or indirectly supported from the post-BB reporting and Jax’s interviews.
Tough part is there’s also plenty of criticism here that isn’t warranted and hindsight is 20/20…but there were signs.
In good news, in spite of this, BB’s teams weren’t very far away from being contenders at times. Razor thin margin, and hopefully Jax can tune these areas with help from a better staff and get the team back on top.

I, for one, personally put a lot of stock in the maturity and trustworthiness of a completely unbiased poster (family member) who responds to (or was involved in) fake accounts pretending to be Dane’s son to slander him, and brings such important insights as “super gay” into the discussion.
If nothing else, does perpetuate that there’s some bad blood there which is too bad for the UND family regardless of where we’re at today. Makes you wonder given how emphatically the players got behind Jax.

Like many others, I’m starting to come around and get on board with Dax. He wasn’t my first choice, as some magical fresh start and mystery candidate that would blow us away was so appealing. But, mostly I was just frustrated with what we’ve seen most of the last decade.
It’s requiring me to put away my Internet ego, that even though I know I don’t have the facts, I somehow know better than the AD & Martinson, previous & existing players, NHL/AHL GM’s, (rumor) Hak’s endorsement, etc.
Some food for thought for those pissed that the “players are holding this decision hostage“.. these players: 1) know hockey at an elite level with exposure to the best, and worst of coaches out there, 2) are deeply personally invested in their development, skills, and ability to get to the next level 3) get to see Jax every day, and are giving their full vote of confidence that they’d rather play for him than any other coach in the country (college or next-level of pro), 4) know that he is going to be no nonsense and push them extremely hard, but are still willing to run through a wall for him, 5) came to UND to WIN, and 6) know exactly what is, and isn’t, going on within that locker room including Barry being out, and are getting immediately behind Jax.
I’m not saying that the players should be able to make the decision or should make threats about the outcome, but why shouldn’t they have an important voice in the hiring decision of who’s the right guy to lead them and their peers? To me, this makes them a very reliable indicator of who’s the right man for the job. If you lineup all of those points above, they hit on nearly everything that we as a fan base want to see in the next head coach, and the players certainly know better than any of us what they’re getting with him.
The biggest thing still remaining for me is can he modernize the game and make the decisions that will keep them at an elite level, given all of his recent experience is executing the systems and product that we’ve been seeing and are frustrated with. I’m cautiously optimistic his choices in the staff he builds around him will be enough to put this to rest.
Plus as an added bonus, the guy will work harder than anyone, bleeds green, and if he does find big success.. is much more likely to stick around and continue it vs. just using it to quickly leapfrog into the NHL.

17 minutes ago, dagies said:My impression as well. Remember, GF is a small town. If UND doesn't want to talk to Brad, there is no one else who will get any stories from them. It's not like there are 2 papers and a dozen reporters covering the team. UND sports reporting is critical to the health of the Herald. A healthy newspaper is a big deal for a community.
I wouldn't think it would go over well in the newsroom if the Herald pissed off UND or a coaching staff unless it was really important information.
True, but UND needs Brad as much as he needs them. A “national powerhouse” college hockey team that doesn’t even have local sports coverage because they demand only positive coverage? A hugely passionate fan base that can’t even read about their team? Not good for business.
Brad probably does get ripped on too much. But he also fanboys out in some bizarre ways. The defense of “bad luck”, “hot goalie’d”, “statistically they should have won!”, “but a defenseman was injured”, and providing zero acknowledgment of Berry’s postseason performance struggles (or other reasons) why he was let go and instead criticizing the decision? It makes it hard to take him seriously- that’s all I’m saying. Maybe like some on here he feels the need to over-index as a way of balancing out the fans sometimes unreasonable expectations, but it comes across as lopsided coverage.

But he didn't do that. He reported facts and people took it that he was plugging for Jax. He wrote about all three most recent hires. Everyone found a hidden agenda in it.
Reporting the scandals.... why do we feel entitled to these stories? Ultimately, does it matter if Jammer was doing something he shouldn't have been? What do readers get out of it if they know? A scapegoat? Seems silly to me.
This is taken to the extreme. I never said he should report gossip nor was I suggesting that personal situations between players or coaches need to be aired (Jamernik etc.). I was simply trying to point out that people should know what to expect - PR approved/spun media that isn’t going to ruffle feathers and occasionally his bias on how he feels about things. And people have a right to be critical if they want or infer meaning from how he writes an article that is spun to a specific narrative - either because UND no longer allows him to report anything unfavorable and/or that he never pushes on any real topics because UND holds his access over his head.

No, he should not. It serves no purpose.
When you are privileged to be allowed “inside”, you have an obligation to keep certain things “in the family”. That includes guys like Schlossman, Hennessy, Poolman, team medical staff, locker room staff etc.
Fair point. But when you publicly come out emphatically for or against a preferred outcome for the next coach…without using that insider info to inform your conclusion…and then also withhold that information from your paid subscribers who instead learn info from fan forums…you can’t complain when your readers are disappointed and cry “bias”, can you?
If journalists can’t be trusted to fairly report the news and instead only report what the team approves as favorable, they SHOULD lose credibility and be considered entertainment not journalism. Suspect this is just the reality of GFK if you want any access to the team, and not Schloss’s preference.
Miss the days when they reported at least some of the player scandals and inside challenges, vs this recent PR only spin on things. But those days are likely gone.

No, you’d just make broad accusations about someone’s character, ability to pass the BAR, and having a criminal history because they ducked a minor cab fee in college - clearly the moral high ground, much better show of class and character right there.

Could probably get more money as an NHL assistant
Sure, he definitely has paths to more money. But he is sitting VERY well financially and family, loyalty/legacy, etc. may be driving him more than professional ambition at this point. Lots of tea leaves over the last year aligning to the possibility of his return which I wouldn’t have expected. We’ll know soon enough.

Family stayed in GFK all this time. Years of the reality of NHL HC gigs - living by himself, working his ass off with no investment from the franchise, then being unceremoniously fired only to have predecessors underperform you…
No idea his thought process, but he’s already more than funded his retirement and making $4-500k annually for a school he bleeds Kelly green for, moving back home, and likely has been concerned about the direction... Could have its appeal? He’s certainly been taking advantage of his paid year off and staying close to the team.
I’d gladly see him back, personally.

I am surprised he doesn't go to the athletic and work as a national college reporter. Ì think those on this forum also need to take a deep breath and let schloss process this just like everyone else has to. Can't wait to see who the new coach is , and i personally hope whoever we hire becomes a key contact of Schloss's on day one
Schloss is paid for coverage, and has a professional responsibility regardless of his feelings. He doesn’t get paid to publicly process and sort through feelings, pitch tantrums, etc.. it’s becoming a pattern for him to provide biased coverage and refuse to cover anything in this admin that could be construed as criticism. THAT’S why some are taking exception to his making excuses on behalf of Berry.

Unfortunately true. But what he’s doing with his tantrum is calling out the University/AD for making a change, instead of ANY mention of the post-season (besides oh no, poor guy have bad luck!) or team management issues. Accountability still lacking in UND sports. Too bad. I used to respect and appreciate Schloss for his coverage, but you have to be a professional to be respected in media and that includes not reporting based on your biases or who you like (or are intimidated by). He obviously had all of his POV for that article already teed up and knew it was a likelihood to end the season, just like we all did.

My concern not knowing if the NHL rule was in effect, was he dragged then picked it up and moved again so fast that you couldn’t tell where the puck was at any given time. Regardless, you couldn’t overturn something you called a goal with any hovering perceived anyway.
In real time, with OMac flying, it definitely wouldn’t have surprised me if he was off (image above was the first I’ve seen that he clearly wasn’t). Add in things generally not going UNDs way this year, improbability of a two game sweep on the road, and UND finding more ways to lose close games vs win this season…just had a general sense of “I’ll believe it when I see it”. No matter how this season ends, at least we’re seeing some passion and grit out of this team that felt like it was lacking. Loved seeing them fired up.
Side rant, I really dislike the modern replay era of not being able to get excited until well after the play is over. If it’s too close for the linesman to tell, just let it go. This game’s being decided over an inch or two on the blue line stuff gets old. At least it’s not football though - enter flag after every big play.

Agreed, was definitely expecting a challenge especially since he took his timeout anyway- so why not challenge instead? Maybe they were rattled and just missed it?
And yes, new (2022?) ruling allows the skate to be lifted as long as it’s not over the plane.
- Offsides: A player shall be considered onside if the skate is over the blue line when the puck enters the attacking zone, which is the rule used in the National Hockey League. Previously, the skate was required to be in contact with the blue line.

And won’t he on the ice more than once in the last 4 minutes of a tie game
Boisvert is elite for sure and a ton of fun to watch - but he’s also a turnover machine and doesn’t excel at a 200’ game (yet).
I’m not here to defend Berry on roster management and certainly won’t complain about seeing plenty of Sacha in scoring opportunities…but he’s a minus on the season for a reason and his unforced turnovers yesterday alone created several chances late that almost got Omaha the tie — and could’ve been the difference between post season vs not. Not an easy choice for a HC with his season on the line.I know we all want our scorers out there all the time (or at least at key times) while players like Schmaltz don’t get a lot of love…but he continues to be steady/solid, had a great PPG setup for the first goal, and more goals are scored for us than against while he’s out there. May not be sexy, but outscoring your opponent in any way you can is still how games are won.
I’d love to build all season to trusting your young goal scorers to show up at big moments (maybe someday), but Berry isn’t likely to change to a high risk/reward style any time soon.

Right? That one was definitely a surprise.
The one that hurt me was seeing Weatherby playing in Czechia. His late departure after all the raving we heard about his camp performance, combined with “what could’ve been” if he’d stayed, wouldn’t sting nearly as much if he’d at least locked down an NHL position. But Czechia?
