  1. Unfortunately I agree with you, Jockey. Since the Ralph opened, there has been a very "corporate" atmosphere just like you find in the NHL rinks....it's all about money. As beautiful as the new arena is, the first thing I noticed about it 3 years ago was the lack of leg room compared to the old Ralph. I realize that adding a few extra inches of space multiplied by the total number of rows would have been quite costly, however, I get sick and tired of having to stand up everytime someone wants to come or go from their seats.

  2. I recall the same banter when Lucia left CC. While Scott Owens hasn't been able to get the Tigers back to the Frozen 4, he has consistently had competitive, NCAA-bound teams.... While the new coaching staff has a lot to say about the quality of the future recruiting classes, I think that UND's reputation (created in part by Blais) will help the program continue to recruit strong players. Being no expert, I still feel that Hakstol has a lot working in his favor-strong supporting cast in Berry and Eades, the arena (which apparently sells itself), and all of those championships (see the banners hanging from the rafters).

  3. Here's a typical experience of attending a Colorado Avalanche game: A nosebleed seat is $35. An average seat in the lower bowl of the Pepsi Center is $75-$100. Parking is $10-$15, depending on how close you want to park. A draft beer is $6.50. Hotdog is $4.50.

I usually have two beers and a dog and a bag of popcorn. So now I've spent 75 on the ticket, 10 for parking and 20-25 bucks on food/drinks. Keep in mind this is for 1 person. A family who attends just one Avalanche game could easily spend two-three hundred bucks....about the cost of a season ticket for the CC Tigers.

It is VERY hard to have any sympathy for the owners OR the players. They're all greedy and it all falls on the shoulders of the fan. Heck, most of the "fans" at Av's games don't even know the game or care about it. It's the "beautiful people" who go just to be seen. They typically talk all game long, except when there's a goal or a fight. The best cheer they have is, "Ref, you suck!" or, "Red Wings suck!" Very original........NOT!

The players AND the league for that matter have no one to blame but themselves.

  4. It appears that Fighting Sioux hockey has become very "corporate" since they opened the new Ralph. I feel at times like I'm at an NHL game and that's really sad....there's a certain charm to college hockey that appears to be slowly going away...this goes for other teams as well.....DU charges 10 bucks for parking-outragious! CC used to charge 2.50 then they raised it to 5.00 last year. I suppose they'll bump it up again. DU's greed is also demonstrated in the pricing of their tickets. They raise the general admission price for CC/DU games to $22 compared to the $15 bucks they charge for all other games. To CC's credit, they do not alter the price of their general admission tickets based on who they're playing-it's the same all around. DU should be mindful that they have a LOT of trouble selling tickets and filling seats (with the exception of the CC games). I have a feeling that in light of winning the NCAA as well as there being no Avalanche games this year, DU will be gauge the spectator even more. I caution them against this as they (DU) could very well go back to their normal days of mediocrity as well as the return of the Av's and the NHL.

  5. As a former GF resident, I can tell you that I ALWAYS hit the Red Pepper for a Grinder (with taco meat) when I come back to visit.

Hanging out at the Blue Moose (great walleye!) and/or Whitey's on Saturday afternoon to shoot pool and watch college football is also fun.

Regardless of what folks are speculating regarding the quality of Minnesota's team this year as well as the Sioux squad for next year (both are predicted to have young teams), the series is always intense and fun!

  6. I think the rush to require netting was a bit hasty on the part of the NHL. Let's consider the fact of how many games have been played (NHL, college, highschool, etc.) over the past 60 or 70 years in rinks with no netting and number of deaths that resulted. I think that statistically speaking the chances of getting killed by a flying puck are very slim. More people have died being struck by lightening than by pucks. I could be wrong but, I think this was the first death as a result of a puck leaving the playing area. Can anyone verify that? My condolences to the family of the little girl who was killed at the Bluejackets game but I think that the powers-that-be ought to have looked into all aspects of the issue before rushing out and putting up those nets in the NHL rinks. I've paid good money for Avalanche tickets and I don't like the netting-it's distracting. I bet that the rest of the WCHA will follow suit as they don't want the liability. In today's high tech age, you'd think that a less obstructive netting could be invented which would have less impact on the spectators' view of the play.

  7. Hey UMDDogz, you wouldn't be disappointed seeing the Wisco or Minny series with the Sioux up at the Ralph. If there's one thing Dogs and Sioux fans usually agree on, its our dislike of the Gophers! If/when I move back to NoDak, my goal is to take a trip to Duluth for a Dogz/Gophs series. From what I've seen on the Gohpers, err, I mean the Fox Sports Net, The DECC really rocks when Minny comes to town.

  8. In what turned out to be Woog's last season as coach of Minny, I had the pleasure of hearing Cal speak at the Sioux Booster luncheon when the Gophers came to town. Cal had the audience in tears, they were laughing so hard. Woog was a very good sport about all the ribbing-even the cracks Cal made about him not being around much longer as the coach. Cal could give a speech that was so effective, you hated to see it end.

  9. Does anyone have an opinion or info. on CC? Everyone seems to think they don't have any returning goal scorers but if Crabb, Sertich, Slattengren, and, most notably Sterling, can improve on their numbers from last year, they might be in good shape for at least a top 5 position this year, don't you think? They always have solid goaltending and Zaba proved he could play last year as a freshman. So coach Owens has an enviable goaltending delemma-McElhinney or Zaba. CC is my sleeper team that might surprise people.

By the way, who was the joker who picked UND to finish 7th??? I won't necessarily say they'll win the WCHA but really, can he/she honestly say that UND will finish that low?!?!

  10. AZSIOUX, what was the Website that you ordered that book from? Are there any stories about the famous "waterbottle" incident in Wisco? I just returned from attending an adult hockey camp in Las Vegas where John Marks was one of the coaches. He told me that was one of the greatest brawls he's seen in all of hockey!

John Newberry picked the wrong guy to mess with when he squirted Eades!!! :p

  11. I had the unfortunate position of sitting in the lower bowl on the UND blueline and I saw DU's winning goal against the Sioux. There is no way Parise can be faulted for his play in the regional nor the goal itself. The DU winger/defenseman made a cross ice pass in which the other DU player one timed it. Then, it was deflected at least once. Parise was in position, anticipating the shot, he was just frozen as he did not anticipate the deflection. There was a lot of traffic in front of him. Props to DU for playing a great game; they really bottled up the Sioux in the last 2 minutes. I could've cried.

  12. Bisonfan1234, you could be right. Good point.

If the Bison fans hate hearing from the Sioux fans about the Nickel trophy, just think how us Colorado College hockey fans are going to feel as we get severely hazed by the DU fans this hockey season! It's been 47 years since the Tigers won the NCAA title.

  13. Last fall, I went to the DU/UND hockey series in Denver. While there, one of the most obnoxious fans in the DU arena wasn't a Pioneers OR a Sioux fan-it was a Bison fan. This kid was wearing a yellow and green UND Sioux Suxs t-shirt and he was talking trash about the Sioux the entire 2 game series. He embarrassed himself as well as the visiting fans from North Dakota with his behavior. My question is this-why would a Bison fan go out of his way to go to a sporting event between two teams of which neither one was an NDSU team? And, why would he go out of his way to trash talk the Sioux? Even the DU fans sitting next to me were scratching their heads over that one. I guess that means Sioux fans living in Colorado should drive up to Greeley next Saturday and cheer on the UNC Bears in their football game against NDSU......again, this would be just as strange.

  14. In talking to my friends here in Denver about North Dakota State going D1 in sports and Fargo's desire to be the "Minneapolis" of the state, they all laugh and say, "who?" ???

  15. Let's call a spade a spade-Bison fans (specifically Fargo) wants so desperately to be like Minneapolis that they'll resort to bumping up their sports to D-1 (and the minor leagues in football). I bet the Fargo people were ready to faint when they saw the "ND State 52 Valpo 0" on the ticker on ESPN during the Virginia Tech/USC game-that certainly will draw talented recruits to Fargo! I look forward to seeing NDSU being successful in One Double A....that's such a HUGE jump from Division Two. Perhaps one day, they'll make the jump to the real Divison 1 in football and we'll be seeing them play in the Orange Bowl against the likes of Oklahoma or Miami. Good luck fellas.

  16. Oh yah, I forgot to mention the arenas-Magness is a HUGE improvement to their old barn with the rainbow on the end wall. Did you know that the players actually had to step up from the bench to get out onto the ice?!?! The new arena lacks character however-very little identifying signs that it's home to the Pioneers. Heck, their NCAA and WCHA championship banners are printed so small you can't read them!

Once DU won the championship, all of these people came out of the woodwork claiming to be loyal DU fans? Where were these people all the years when I would go to DU games against such teams as BC, Maine, UNH, MINN, UND, etc. and the 6k seat arena would barely be half full? CC/DU is the ONLY series that they can sell out.

World Arena-Nice but again, sterile. They play on Olympic size ice, which I hate. Fans are nice; almost annoyingly nice. As a CC alum, I hate to say this but the students are stupid (they're a bunch of rich Californians who know nothing about hockey). Their only cheer is to say the name of the goalie 3x and then say, "You suck D*$K!" Not very "PC" for such a liberal school now is it?!?!

CC made a HUGE mistake by not taking the opportunity to own it. Instead, they let the city finance it. What this means is, CC is a tenant and they pay rent. They recover nothing from the beer and concessions. The former CC president, Katheryn Morhman really messed up that one. They play concerts, WWF wrestling, rodeos, etc there. CC really missed a great revenue opportunity.

  17. I've gone to several CC/UND games as well as DU/UND game at both the World Arena and Magness Arena. While generally speaking the crowds are friendly, they aren't too bright on the rules of hockey. The fans that sit around me talk about getting their nails done, what's on sale at Nordstrom, or about the Broncos quarterback situation. I'd recommend a trip out to Colorado Springs or Denver for any Sioux fan wishing to see good hockey (CC and DU typically play the Sioux well in their buildings; minor exception being DU last fall) as well as getting in some skiing up at Vail or Winter Park.

  18. As a Colorado College alum and former GF resident, I'd be thrilled to see Lucia go to UND. This however is very unlikely as he's been very successful with one of college hockey's premier teams, Minnesota. The only reason why I think there is even the slightest chance of Lucia being interested in the UND job is that apparently he is very family oriented and he hasn't been thrilled with all of the committments that have come with the U of M job....an aspect he didn't have when coaching at CC.

  19. Don't know if I'm the lone Sioux fan in Denver who listened to the game tonight but that was awesome! I look forward to seeing them come out here and get some revenge for last year's series between the two teams at the DU arena. As a Colorado College alum it's always nice to see DU lose. As a die-hard Sioux fan, it's even better if its the Gophers!
