  1. This was a game where the offense needed to show up and it didn't. Schmidt was absolutely right in that the offense regressed as the year progressed and that is 100% on the offensive coordinator. Every legit team we played other than Kansas St the offense completely vanished. You aren't going to make it far if you are asking your team to hold the opponent under 10 points each game to win. I don't think Freuchte will be out this offseason, but I also don't agree with it. He has not shown the ability to field a competitive offense against the top end of FCS teams and the last two seasons of QB play are just depressing. Simon never should have been a full-year starter last year and Kaminski actively regressed throughout the season. That shows lack of recruiting and lack of development and you just can't have that and expect to be winning close games.

  2. I think second half of the season Jerry might have been getting in his own head when it comes to reads. Saw that today where the run game just wasn't working. Simon comes in and is able to get movement with the run game. Could simply be that Jerry isn't reading correctly and getting the line on the same page.

I also wonder if they've fallen in love a bit too much going to the rpo with Jerry and are hamstringing the line a bit. RPO line has to worry about not getting downfield, whereas a dedicated run they can just put their nose down and bully the defense.

JTJ seemed very inconsistent in just the little bit I saw him I saw him in game action, felt Simon could come in a situation exactly like this and drive the car to the finish line if needed.

I agree with this, even prior to injury I would have preferred to see Simon in over JTJ in this kind of situation. JTJ was just flat inaccurate in the playtime he got during the season. Simon knows the offense and he did well in a high stress situation.

    Schmidt in Millers article:

"Unbelievable, right?" Schmidt said of Rucker. "If you're in Grand Forks and you want to keep Lance Rucker around, you should call the 701 Awards right now and start paying into that thing because we need to keep him in Grand Forks.

Crazy state of college sports with NIL poaching.

  5. After a bit of reflection: the defense did what it's been doing most of the year and showed TT the best defense they'd seen all year. Their one score was just a broken coverage to the tight end. Other than that we pretty much locked up their wideouts and pretty sure their QB will be having nightmares about Rucker for awhile.

The offense was atrocious. The playcalling was suspect, Jerry was wildly inaccurate, the decision making was not great, and was doing nothing to help out the running game. You hate to see a kid get injured, especially on a dirty hit, but it might have actually helped the offense in the second half. Romfo did nothing spectacular, nothing sexy, but what he DID do was make the right decisions. He got the offense checked into the correct audibles, he didn't turn the ball over or force it (other than that offside play), and he did enough via passing to help the run game. The two things that unlocked the offense were A. getting Ziebarth carries, and B. the outside pass. Just the quick receiver screen was enough to force the safeties to respect plays outside of the hashes and that opened up run lanes. That is the same things that Jerry was doing earlier in the season and why he was having success, do enough in the passing game to open up the run. Where Jerry's game excels over Romfo's is that he is more aggressive going downfield. That was leading to a lot of success when we had goodJerry reading the defense correctly but haven't had that in awhile with a plethora of badJerry games.

Kudos to Simon. He came in and was better than Jerry. Thats all that was needed to win this won offensively.

Came in, got the right audibles, did enough in the passing game. With today's defense that was more than enough. Heck, he should have had two more completions if they weren't dropped by receivers.

IMO. - Isaac has been calling. a MUCH better game - great to see

Romfo has just been doing a great job

It appears he's calling a better game because he's just handing it off to his bigger backs and they are getting north/south. That's all there really is to it.
