  1. Not to detract from our beloved Fighting Sioux, but did anyone happen to catch the Sunday Night butt kicking the Beavers put on

the Goofers, and on their home ice. 6-2 Beavers over Goofers....

  2. I'm just surprised that the Gopher hockey team hasn't been entangled in some sort of scandal like the men's basketball team or the football team seem to find themselves in every so often. University of Minnesota-Scandal, located in Minneapolis/St. Paul, just have to wonder who does the schoolwork for Lucia's boys.

  3. Spirit Lake doesn't have nearly the organized opposition that is present at Standing Rock. On Spirit Lake the main antagonist is Erich Longie and his few followers. At

Standing Rock there were Ron His Horse Is Thunder, Jesse Taken Alive and to some degree Mr. Gipp at the United Tribes college, those three individuals monopolized the

conversation regarding the nickname/logo, and made any Indian supporters of the nickname/logo out to be something less than intelligent. Any pro nickname Indians were simply to ignorant to know. Finally, the elders and true traditionalists, and the veterans stepped forward, and said enough, we don't see it that way, and are for the nickname/logo. I'm confident that the Standing Rock tribe will get a vote set up and will support the Fighting Sioux, remember, Bob Eaglestaff, the true Fighting Sioux warrior enshrined in the Sioux Hall of Fame.

  4. I'm all for letting them do it in their own way and their own terms, but lets say the State Board allows and allows and allows more deadlines more extensions-- and all of a sudden woh, wait a second, now we are on top of the NCAA deadline, and nothing has really been accompolished, would you be asking the tribe for more urgency then?

Absolutely, but now we're not even a month into the new tribal council at Standing Rock, Murphy wasn't the only change, there were at least 5 other seats that

changed, so essentially a new council.

  5. Anyone that has been in Indian country within the last several weeks, will readily recognize that however important the nickname and logo is to the white world, it is not and never has been the all great and important issue at Standing Rock or Spirit Lake. Anyone that continues to insist that it's the most important thing to the people of

Standing Rock at the present time has obviously never visited that reservation or Spirit Lake for that matter. And no, the casino visit doesn't count! The vote will happen in due time, just relax..

  6. Nickname supporters should just be thankful the name is still alive, Standing Rock will eventually get to it. State Board will look silly if they adhere to the deadlines

they prematurely set. The one that matters is the lawsuit. MLSBison don't pretend that the white man's political world moves all that much faster than that of the tribes.

Check out the Health Care debates in Washington, that's moving really swift isn't it...

  7. Well I would have thought by now that some fan out there would have provided the "Black Hole Chant", as I requested. Here's what I remember, when the Sioux scored, the students would chant "You're a Black Hole, no you're a vacuum, no you're a black hole, no you're a vacuum, you suck, sieve, sieve, sieve. Forgive me for inaccuracy, but something to that effect. Sounded very cool when it was chanted....

  8. Higher Ed Board should have just left the deadlines as outlined in the lawsuit, nothing in Indian country ever moves as quickly as it should.

The Tribal Council at Standing Rock is moving as quickly as need be, the new council has more pressing internal reservation issues to deal with, such as winter heating and housing issues. There will eventually be a vote and that vote will be in support of the nickname, tribal elders recognize that the pipe ceremony giving the

    university their blessing was sacred.

  9. The Standing Rock group is waiting right up until the deadline to request an extension from the board of higher ed. I'm convinced that

if given time, i.e., the Board hadn't prescribed this deadline, the Standing Rock tribe will have a vote on the nickname, and it will mirror the

vote at Spirit Lake, maybe even higher. Since at Spirit Lake, Erich Longie and his crew went around the weekend before the vote with flyers

claiming that Ralph Engelstad referred to them as prairie N---ers. Still vote was 67% approval.

    FIGHTING SIOUX FOREVER!

  10. I used to like that one but do the students even do that one anymore?

No, I haven't ever heard it in the Ralph, but it would be cool to revive, Black Hole was classic chant. Never heard it anywhere else either.

  11. Regardless of potential locker room problems, this current Sioux squad has a feel, a vibe that it's going to be an enjoyable and fun season. The three

seniors are talented, not as many as the 8 that graduated, but pound for pound every bit if not more talented. I think those eight for the most part, overachieved, i.e., did Finley ever learn how to skate, say like Commodore or Green? I think not. This 09-10 team, the sky is the limit, especially with a fast start, rather than chasing, being chased.

  12. I agree with that, but would like to continue with my comments on Erich Longie, Ron His Horse Is Thunder, Leigh Jennotte, Jesse Taken Alive, and the rest of the minority of the minority. These individuals are never in the spotlight for anything other than their opposition to the nickname. It's like the balloon boy's father, they crave the attention, but it's never for the advancement of the native people, like a fight against poverty, alcoholism, teenage suicide, joblessness, diabetes, or lack of housing on the reservations. If getting rid of the nickname would have an impact on any of these areas, I would be all for it, but the day the nickname goes, these problems will still be

    rampant on the reservations.

  13. yeah, Jesse Taken Alive was the person speaking on WDAZ last night, a long time nickname opponent. The State Board of higher Ed should never have set

the stupid ass deadlines, they are going to extend them whether the Standing Rock Tribe asks or not. The Board members are spineless and don't want to be

the people that let the minority of the minority win out. The numbers in a standing rock vote will mirror spirit lake, and the opponents there will continue to whine just like

Erich Longie is at Spirit Lake. He suffered so much while attending UND that he stuck around and got three degrees. His interest in the nickname is keeping his own name

in news and his face on tv.

  14. National Championships in sports other than hockey, Big Ten, when is the last time a football team from there was national champion, and when was the last

time a basketball team from there was national champion. You would think the way Big Ten supporters act, that the conference was dominant in all major sports.

Seems like they win once every 20 years, maybe. Am I wrong? Michigan and Indiana in basketball, and Michigan and Ohio State in football, but recently, I don't think so.

Oh yeah, Michigan State in basketball also, but it seems like most Big Ten supporters overlook that school as the little brother.

  15. Yeah, it was still a great hockey weekend, maybe it'll jumpstart the Sioux so they don't have to play catchup

the entire season like the last four seasons. I'll take 3 out of 4 points from the Gophers in October anytime.

By January, MacWilliam will be hitting like Blood, to bruisers for sure! I really don't see the Gophers playing any

better hockey than what they did on Saturday night. I know it's only their second game, but the talent just isn't

as deep as in the past. They are garden variety team. Now the Sioux have present stars, and stars waiting to shine.

Gotta like what we've seen so far....

  16. I'm all for treating the vistors rudely, but not getting into physical altercations. The good natured barbs are what's great about college hockey, and besides

many of us have friends and family with (unfortunately) gopher ties. Acquaintance of mine from cities, gets accosted in the concourse before game and during

intermission, that's out of line. The great thing about hockey is the post game handshake, as much as Haxtell and Lucia dislike each other, they still shake.
