  1. I posted this in another thread and was told to move it over here. Any takers, let me know.....

At the last MSU series, a couple of the seniors (Dorr and Louwerse) organized a silent auction for the future leaders at MSU. They were able to get a ton of hockey memorabilia. One of the things there was a replica St. Patty's Day Toews Blackhawks jersey. Having a few drinks in my system, I committed the ultimate silent auction error. I bid someone up....and ended up winning the damn thing. Now, I don't mind Toews by any stretch of the imagination, but, frankly, I'm never going to wear the thing. I have no tie to Toews and don't care for the Blackhawks. The unfortunately part is that the lady I was trying to bid up, came back after the auction was over and wanted to buy it for more, but due to the rules, I couldn't give it up to her.

So, here's the question, I paid $175 for the thing. I would like to get rid of it and would accept $150. If I don't get the $150, I will just donate it and have an additional write-off. I would much rather have actual cash though. I can provide pics if any one is interested, but don't want to spam your board. If anyone is interested, please let me know. I hope it could be a win-win. If not, no skin off of anyone's back and I'll never do something so stupid again.

  2. From a MSU perspective, the resurgence has coincided with the schedule easing up. It hasn't just been the level of competition (albeit that is some of it). This team's injuries were rivaling what UND has been going through. At one point, MSU had to take a 3rd goalie on the road just to have a full roster. One of our senior forwards (Schiller) has played more than half the year as a defenseman and had started 3 freshmen defenders most of the year. In an early game against UMD, the injuries to the defense deplete the team so much that Palmquist (a freshman) played 35 and 38 shifts over the course of the weekend. Add to that losing our top scorer from last year and it meant having to grow a ton while on the ice.

The level of play has improved a ton since then. This by no means is a plea to anyone to think this is a top 3 team in the conference, but to characterize the resurgence simply as playing lesser teams just isn't true.

  3. Your statement is laughable, UND was playing MSU-M and BSU long before they were in the WCHA and traveling to their barns when your team wouldn't even travel to Bemidji or Mankato. Why do you think BSU wanted to open up the Sanford Center with UND and not Minnesota?

Again, MSU was only independent for 3 years before coming into the WCHA. If that's the case for BSU, fine, but it wasn't for MSU. Splitting hair, I know, but still fact.

  4. The Gophers played at Bemidji in October of 2000 and Lucia was always very vocal in his support for them joining the WCHA. Also Minnesota every year during this time was locked in to four non-conference games a year with the showcase and the Mariucci Classic so they didnt have the felxibility in their schedule like UND did.

As for MSU, we were only independent for 3 years before joining the WCHA. That's a pretty small window. MN has been very good to MSU in all aspects of this transition. You'll be hard pressed to find many bad things said about MN from the people in the know at MSU. UND, I think, is a bit of a different story. No one says anything bad about UND, but they aren't going out of their way to praise them either for what it's worth. There are a lot of hard feelings toward the NCHC schools in Kato (and, I think, Bemidji). Just one man's opinion/observations.

  5. Agree, and we rarely attacked the offensive zone with numbers and speed...the few times we did we got decent scoring chances.

I keep thinking about the fact that we found a way to sweep on the road without two first line forwards...you take two top end forwards off most teams in this league and they don't go and sweep MSU on the road.

We finish the first half in first in the WCHA by two points, we have the top goal scorer in the nation. I can live with our start :D

We also have the most wins in the country having played the toughest schedule in college hockey

My Mavs were playing really well and forced a lot of those turnovers. It's series like this that show why UND wins and MSU loses. A team should never control play as mcuh as MSU did and not come away with one win at home. Any momentum that we had going into this weekend has been lost. I'm convinced that MSU has the same type of mental block with UND as we used to have with the Gophs.

Our fans can only handle so many more "we hung with them and played really well" kind of weekends.

  6. St. Paul/South Suburbs as well - nice.

Don't expect it to be a real good broadcast. It's produced by one of the other colleges in town and has students running the broadcast. I watch a bunch of games on it each year, but it's certainly not as high of quality as you guys are used to. It's still better than nothing though.

  7. How would you compare him with Zacharias?

I'd say it's too early to tell. Cook was actually the #3 goalie coming into the year last year. He didn't make his first start until January and worked his way into the starting role. They have different styles too. Cook is, I believe, 6'3" and Zacharias was 5'9" if memory serves. Cook is a big guy that doesn't get out of position too often, but he also won't make as many of the circus type saves (or at least he hasn't done that on a regular basis yet).

  8. There is a ramp by the arena, if I remember....

Tons of on street parking available. Don't bother paying for parking unless you aren't willing to walk a couple blocks. My suggestion is to park in the Wells Fargo parking lot or one of the local business' parking lots.

  9. Methinks it was either an aberration or the Gophers. Cook's GAA for the season is just over 3.0 and their senior backup is about 3.2 on the season. It should be noted that MSU had their full team intact for the first time just a couple weeks ago so maybe that has made a difference.

Cook is actually better than he's given credit for. He really started hitting his stride near the end of last year. He almost stole the series for us last year in the playoffs against SCSU. Our team defense has finally gotten to the point of being able to confident in front of him. I can virtually guarantee the Sioux will have at least 3 odd man rushes each game still. Our defense tends to hang our goalies out to dry a lot.

EDIT: Holy crap, I cant believe I registered almost 2 years ago and just made my first post.
