  1. ... We don't get a second chance to keep the name, why are we giving up just when a few things started to fall in place to keep the name. ...

...I know if I had paid for REA I would not go along with the agreement. Not one logo would be removed from the arena, in fact I would probably start adding more. The only way I would go along with it is if the tribal members voted against the use of the nickname. That is a decision that I could respect. I would not give in to a pathetic group like the NC$$ or a group of professional complainers that will always find something or someone to blame for their problems when maybe they need to be looking in a mirror.

And this would benefit your alma mater in what way? Or is success of the DI move -- and of UND -- not your concern.

Whether you love the nickname or not, the game was over when the NCAA membership confirmed the executive council's authority to make policy about anything it likes. The lawsuit settlement included all we could get.

The issue has only a tangential relationship to the Summit League. If you flout this "edict" and keep the name you can bet tougher sanctions will follow. Basketball, baseball, etc. might lose out on a conference home now, but hockey would be affected sooner or later.

The affirmative vote at Spirit Lake was encouraging, but the agreement seems to require formal action by a governing body, at least at Standing Rock. Where have you seen any indication that will be forthcoming any time in the foreseeable future?

  2. If the people on this board think that the nickname is more important than real conference affilication, they are dead wrong. If they think UND can make it work in the Great West, or that other conferences will come calling to the Canada border, dead wrong again. If you think that the nickname is the most important thing, you might as well stick a fork in every program you have except Hockey. If you think that a nickname is more important than baseball, volleyball, soccer, softball, track&field, etc . . . get your DII application ready because you will not be able to recruit as athletes will choose ncaa eligible options. Yeah, I expect everyone to fight for the nickname and thumb their nose at trading the nickname for a Summit bid . . . but let's face it, if you want to be DI it's your only option unless you can get all your sports into the WCHA. The SBoHE will be burned at the stake for their decision, but they are actually doing UND a favor. I really believe that most people actually know that, it just isn't easy to swallow.

    Excellent post.

  3. I didn't see Moody (the juco transfer LB) out there, but I did watch the replay on fightingsioux.com and Mussman, who was in the booth with Hammer and Mike Berg during the first half, talked briefly about the two jucos and said something to the effect that Moody is a little ahead of McKendry in terms of adjusting to this level of football, so he's evidently still on the team.

Interesting comment. In his blog, Wayne Nelson said McKendry would be on O line starter if the season were starting today. I suppose that may take into account Bondy's injury, but hard to square that observation with Mussman's comment. And where's McGurran? Oh well, a lot of time and practice to sort it out befor the season opener.

  4. Drew Daggett had a few catches. I've assumed, given his size and track accomplishments, that he'd be a candidate to start or at least see considerable playing time. And was Chris Anderson, previously described by Mussman as the "other speed guy" to go with Bamba, on the field today? I don't recall seeing him.

  5. The guy has a reasonable point. Many Bison fans are also UND hockey fans. I would hate to come to this web site and find there is no place for discourse or debate.

Anyone who thinks Bison fans would be all that concerned about the name issue are mistaken. Many enjoy the whining and fuss and the fact that it any negative publicity for UND is good for them.

I would hope most UND hockey fans are simply UND fans. Anyone who might feel threatened by what someone posts on this website about the subjects here might need to get out more.

Well said. Couldn't agree more. Always refreshing to read an honest give-and-take conversation here, regardless of the background of the contributors. Anyone who prefers smack-filled banter where no dissent is tolerated can ALWAYS get their fill at Bisonville.

  6. Haven't seen the Grand Forks Herald, but today's Forum carries a prominent ad on the back page of the first section promoting activities around the spring game -- tailgaiting, kids' activities, autographs, FSC party and, of course, the game itself. Great at long last to see concrete evidence of a plan to actively market football. And great to see it extending beyond the Grand Forks city limits.

Aside being home to at least hundreds of alumni, I would think Fargo, as the state's largest city, would be huge in attempts to grow the fan base. I hope some outreach to Bismarck and Minot is planned, too.

Brian Faison said last year he was disappointed in the lack of promotion for the spring game. Glad to see he came through this year. I hope this is just the opening act in a more aggressive plan to sell ALL of UND's DI sports, and the university itself. Nice to see at least somebody "get's it."

  7. Correct. Late signing period is coming soon for 2009 class and early signing period for the 2010 class is November.

Thanks for the correction. IIRC, UND has no additional scholllies remaining for '09-10.

  8. There should be either two or three scholarships available for the class of 2010-11. Doug McDermott has apparently been offered, but I haven't heard of any other offers yet for that class. I would think point guard is a priority.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't we in/nearing the early signing period for '10-11? News soon?

  9. .... just as there are some Sioux fans on this site that many of us would probably prefer to see go away, there are some on bisonville such as lakesbison who aren't necessarily representative of the average NDSU fan. Of course, I quite possibly would be more in agreement with you if I actually frequented bisonville on a more regular basis. ...

I might be biased, but I'd say the ratio of crazies -- Bisonville vs SiouxSports -- is about 6 to 1, tilting heavily toward the AC. How that relates to the overall fan base is anybody's guess.

As frequently noted here, UND threads continually pop up all over Bisonville. Saw Denny Walacker wearing a Sioux hat this AM as a form of apology for his "joke" about the Sioux; even in the midst of a 500-year flood, still obsessing over a university they refuse to play.

  10. NDSU is pretty much out of options now for an FCS team in Fargo on Sept 12th, assuming that Wagner did in fact move the Bryant game to that date.

UND still has a small possibility to get Sam Houston to Grand Forks if the money is there.

I'm willing to bet that if Faison would give Gene a call and offered something reasonable, this thing could get worked out for this season. Brian, it's up to you.

Clearly, its up to Joe Chapman.

But let me offer what apparently is a minority opinion here: I welcome your input on SiouxSports. May not always agree, might get exasperated with your stubborn positions, but I appreciate that you've been responsible for generating more SS traffic than anyone recently in what might otherwise be a rather slow period.

  11. You don't have to cheer for the Bison to respect what they've accomplished. NDSU didn't blaze the transition trail to Div I/FSC (programs have been doing it for years), but they've done it as well as anyone has in years. They certainly exceeded my expectations through great planning, solid coaching, excellent marketing, strong fan/administrative support -- and a little luck along the way. I've heard more than one UND coach compliment their strategy and execution.

As to the financial rewards, I believe I heard Gene Taylor say today that the AC (can't let the lovefest go on forever) forfeited any NCAA tournament income (which I believe flows through the league) for three years as part of the price of admission to the Summit.

  12. Congrats NDSU, at least one college in North Dakota has a legit basketball team.

And kudos to you, too. You've never missed an opportunity to take a cheap shot at the university you supposedly support. Keep up the good work.

  13. And lastly, there is no possible configuration of the Big Sky where any Dakota school gets voted in. Aint happening.

The concept is only perpetuated by those who hate NDSU and want to see UND in a separate conference.

I don't want to pile on (because -- call me crazy -- but I actually enjoy your input), but where do you get the notion that only "NDSU haters"

prefer that UND get into the Big Sky?

The Sky would offer a single home __ and a familiar set of rivals -- for nearly all of UND sports. The league has enjoyed a much higher profile in the area than the Summit. (That may have changed some recently thanks to the wall-to-wall coverage of the Bison-oriented, Fargo-based media.) The MVFC is not a bad gig, but there's no guarantee of entry there if one joins the Summit. That leaves football with the Great West, an unstable position to say the least. Of course, annual games with the Montana schools would be a big draw.

UND may never get into the Big Sky -- and the departure of the Montana schools would make it less appealling -- but there's every reason to believe the FCS/I AA world will change dramatically as the end of the moratorium draws near.

If you want animosity, slouch on over to Bisonville and see the endless stream of fanatics who hope to avoid UND at any cost. Or check with your administration, which is stalling competition in every sport.

  14. I wonder how serious Ledger's injury is. Roebuck said on the coach's show tonight (without offering a name obviously) that they still have one scholarship available for next year, and that they are looking at JC player who stands 6'5".

Anyone have any ideas as to who these two players may be?

I'm guessing Kate Sharkova, currently a second-year, 6'5" post player at Lake Region in Devils Lake.
