  1. Am I incorrect?  I thought the Champions Club set a new all time mark as far as dollars raised last year.  And essentially have been one upping themselves every year for quite some time now.  The way some people make it sound on here is that UND  has been missing the mark horribly in raising dollars for athletics, repeatedly.

If anything Mr. Chaves must be thrilled to arrive an at an institution, where there has been a proven track record of not only setting and reaching goals when it comes to club fundraising, but often times surpassing them, where in comparison the institution that he arrives from (EWU) has had, and continues to have significant struggles in that area.

I'm as excited as the next person that he is here, but I don't see our fundraising  as an apocalyptic issue that has been hanging over Athletics as others do I guess.

so what happens if denver goes wcc and omaha goes to the horizon/mvc/ovc???????????

The West Coast Conference is looking like it is trying to make it's final appeal to keep Gonzaga.

The argument looks fairly reasonable of why they should consider making the move to the Mountain West.  I realize it's only an opinion piece, but there are some interesting arguments within it.

Will the WCC back fill? And will the 2 main candidates be Seattle U and Denver?  The shuffle of college athletics looks only to continue.

  3. Having stopped in Vermillion to watch UND against the Yotes this year, on my way back from business. I saw Mckeever from USD and I thought she was dreadful and wasnt convinced that she would beat out many of our guards.  That is saying a lot.  I really thought going in that she was going to be a noticeable difference maker that we would regret missing out on, as our guards have been nothing to write home about.  I thought USD had some nice players, that were instrumental for them to come back and win, but it certainly had nothing to do with Mckeever.  All I’m saying is I’m not sure UND missed out on her, to my amateur eye.

Here we go again with the marketing discussion with no context.

Are you a Twin Cities parent of a school-age and college-bound student, or are you yourself a young adult? How do you interact with UND and NDSU ads? Drive-by? TV? Radio? Are you an alum or fan of either or both?

I am going to go out on a limb here.  UND and NDSU are known quantities in the Twin Cities.  Students looking to go to a relatively cheap, public, mid-size who want to get 'a few hours away from the nest' will always consider both, and TC children of ND alums/natives will always be in the mix.  I have no doubt that UND and NDSU get their due in HS counseling and college advising offices.  I suspect that TV and billboard ads have very little effect on the target demographic.

Football fan? NDSU is for you. Five rings in six years will do that.

Hockey fan? UND all the way baby.

Want the bigger city with better travel options (i.e., multiple airlines, two interstate highways), more restaurants, better shopping?  Boom, it's Fargo.

Interested in medicine, aviation, petroleum engineering?  UND.

Do we honestly believe that one school is a better strategic marketer than the other, or that there's that much of a return on the advertising investment?  Hell, the schools (and towns) freaking sell themselves.  What we has adults, alumni, and fans may perceive vis-a-vis marketing is almost meaningless.  Put yourself in the shoes of a HS junior in the Twin Cities and go from there.

    Thank you for this.

If you're coming from a distance, it's  nice to see two games in a row.

That's a fair point, which I understand.  And maybe if I went on the road I would prefer that. However, where do the majority of the fans come to games from...probably 30 mile radius.  Do you cater to the few that are coming long distance or the many that are the majority of your attendance?  It's kind of like the question along the same lines of those who talk about why isn't the Marketing department running a whole bunch of ads in Minot and or Bismarck and for hypothetical purposes let's use season basketball tickets.   Again, just for an example if their budget was 50K, and they spent 15K of it in that/those markets and got 7 people to buy 7 tickets is that a good return on investment?  Where if they were to spend it in around the immediate area, where most people are more likely able to get to the games, wouldn't that be money better spent.

And to the point of many that I've visited with at The Betty, very few seem to be clamoring for the return of double-headers.  And the feeling I get is with the way current college basketball games are being called by the officials, timeouts used by the coaches  and media timeouts etc...they already seem to be plenty long for most.

At what point is it cheaper to Charter a plane than purchase X amount of Tickets.  Hockey team charters a plane everywhere they fly.   BB teams with players and coaches is about the same size as a hockey team.

I call BS if the Women's team can't wait for the Men's game to be done before leaving on a Bus.  If going back to Hotel, the bus makes 2 trips.  If leaving they can wait an extra 2 hours.

Just knowing the NCC days, they for example the Women would leave after a game in Mankato and head to Sioux Falls and Augustana, because they had early practice in Sioux Falls the next day...while the men would stay in Mankato after their game and leave the next day.   Bus trips also offer time for Coach's to address their team, and interact with their team. What is said to their team, more than likely is meant just for them. Not saying I agree or disagree, but I don't see that changing.   To your other point, no idea what charters cost.  Good question

  7. I guess when it comes to the argument of having double-headers, will save $'s, I never really been able to see it that way.  Attendance, wise, that's maybe a slightly better argument.  But I know I'm not alone, when I say that I will not go to a double-header.  I will choose one game or the other, that just takes up too much of my day to go to both games. Honestly,  I can say I've gotten spoiled of realizing how nice it was not having to sit through 2 games once we made the move to D1 and the Big Sky.  I can equate it to how the movie Stepbrothers...where they make their beds into bunk beds and they realize they have "so much more room for activities"...that's what I realized for me only in my case in had to do with "my time", when we stopped essentially scheduling double-headers.'

I would say that we go to both Women's and Men's basketball now as a family quite frequently especially during the conference season.  Cause it's been Thursday/Saturday- no matter if it's men's or women's.  It's been easy to get into that routine. If they started doing more double-headers again, we'll probably try just go to one or the other.

  8. 1 hour ago, Siouxperfan7 said:

Not sure why mid major conferences who are all trying to save money don't do this.  You would think it would be much cheaper to send both teams on a road trip as opposed to sending them on two separate road trips.  I get it that schools would likely only sell 1 ticket for 2 games and they are worries that would hurt their ticket sale revenue.  But you never know, it could increase overall attendance.

If the travel is by plane...don't you have to by a plane ticket for each player/coach/support staff regardless?  So, I'm not sure a double-header is the solution, it's not like you are saving on air travel by having them travel together. It's not like they can share hotel rooms. D1 coaching MBB & WBB staffs are not going to bus all-together on one bus because in fact, even if it were a WBB & MBB double-header are on the road, the women's team following the game is not going to wait for the Men's game conclusion before departing, they are going to get on the road.  So in my mind, double-headers make little or no sense.  I do not miss double-headers.  The nights and days got way too-long.  As a fan, I like, 1 game...go watch, cheer, and get home in about 2 1/2 hours (give or take)

  9. I still contend that the Big Sky semifinal between UND and Weber State in 2013 at Dahlberg Arena in Missoula was one of the best games of college basketball (at our level...mid to low major) I've watched.  Win or lose.  In that instance we lost, but it was just a very well played, wonderfully intense game.   Of course the class of Anderson, Webb, Huff were the catalysts(Of course I was a huge fan of, but I know many weren't).  But Brekke, Wilmer and Schuler, also played good roles.  In fact Wilmer was playing so good by that point in his career.   It took several years to get to that point, but eventually he was incredibly serviceable inside.  A look at our "bigs" over the last decade, it's been players who were from the region in Wilmer and Brekke who may have been some of our better finds  for that area of the roster.  Sadly for Brekke, injuries cut his time short.  I think that has got to be the formula for getting "Bigs" who contribute.  It shows that red-shirting is a good option in the development of those players for UND's level.  If there is a legitimate complaint that I would have is that Walter didn't red-shirt last year, and Franken didn't red-shirt this year.  I think that is a legitimate criticism.   Those 2 players would have been way better in their 5th year seasons as opposed to their 4th year.  Even if the player is hesitant to take a red-shirt, which many are, because they want to be done with school in a certain period of time, an example like Wilmer should be used to at least demonstrate that it can be effective.  But every player is going to make the choice that they feel is best for them after all the options are laid out.

If you look at the low or mid major teams that get a win or win(s) plural in the tournament...it's almost always because they have found some diamond in the rough outstanding veteran guard play.  For example....SDSU had Wolters, NDSU had Woodside, UND had Hooker & Crandall- got to the tournament but didn't make a run.  A step up Northern Iowa, has had Farokhmenesh and Ahelegbe or even Wes Washpun and Jeremy Morgan.   The hunt for talented guards must continue, because when you have them they are the engine of a potential run...so IMHO, I'm not disappointed that we look for sneaky talented guards, and I know that it is not easy to find good "Bigs" at our level...cause if they are good, most likely every other team is after them too.  There is more guards in the pool to choose from.  And quite honestly, at least over the last decade, we've had some very good guards to watch in UND's back court.

Why are you so angry?  You seem happier when this team is losing.

That is actually true of several on here.  When UND Men's Basketball is losing they feel much better about themselves.  It's a chance to go negative and feel that any self prophesying has been validated.  Thankfully, I have a choice of when to visit here, and when not to.  It's my own fault if I let their constant need to go negative  with their takes on the program wreck my day.  It would also be my own fault if I chose to hang out them in my real life, which I would choose not to.  My take, is Billy Brown is going to earn what he gets.  He is in the rotation right now because he defends, and believe it or not he's 4 for 8 from beyond the arc over the course of this 3 game winning streak.  It appears that he is now ahead of Jafar in the rotation, so I would anticipate we are going to see more of him.  I don't care what offers he did or didn't have. He plays for the team I choose to cheer for, so I'm going to cheer for him too.   That perspective, of course, will be considered wrong, by many on here who only want to see blood, and even then I'm not sure they ever would be happy.

Well not just the guy, but the perceived lack of giving a crap about ND.  My guess is Faison will be harder to find than Keyser Soze after he walks away.  And you might drop your coffee mug, too.

He must of told you too that he never cared about North Dakota.  I know that’s what he said to me:silly:

Let me guess, you didn’t stand at clap at the fan luncheon today. Classy.  Butthurt much?

  13. Shouldn’t Brekke & Mannausau be working on the donors? That’s their job description right?  Isn’t the President and AD suppose to come in and shake the hands and kiss the babies once those 2 have them signed sealed and delivered. It’s weird. I’ve never once considered who was President or AD when making my contributions to the University it’s athletics.

  14. Thought this was interesting.   There have been quite of few people at tailgating, that I sit next to at The Betty and The Ralph that have been telling me the opposite.   This has to be fake news...

Not to say that we can't do more...but it appears the numbers show we have been trending upward for quite some time now.

  15. Well, I’m assuming they wrote the covering of prostitutes fees into the contract.  At least i hope they did. That seems like an obvious inclusion...although not sure what the options are for quality in our area.  Even better Adidas even covers ones that are in from out of town.

Also, this is a very big plus and may come in handy as well.  If for some reason you have a problem with a lady official refereeing your game you tell Adidas...Tell them to remind her to “stay in her lane” and from what I’ve read...Adidas will have her promptly removed from the game.

  16. Those Notre Dame uni’s are a perfect example of the utter non sense that being an Adidas School a Times has been. I haven’t been sold on out WBB uni’s this year. However, the shoes  that Sica posted is a classic look that forever works.  I’m hoping for classic looks, that are time tested.

Since they aren’t writing a check to UND, i remain somewhat unconvinced that this was all entirely necessary but knowing our budget...  Every little bit of savings helps so I’m willing to see how it goes.  Please coaching staffs look at some of the hideous Louisville, Wisconsin, Notre Dame etc...uniforms offerings from years past and at the very least try not let happen to your program.

  17. It is a great article.  I try go. and my family goes, and we all love it when we do. But we all go for free.  Because of Champions Club.  I think there at least should have been attendance v. paid attendance discussion.  Because that's really the next step needed.  Paid Attendance.  Yeah, that's great if you are getting great attendance but if no one is buying hardly any tickets, are you really helping the bottom line of the sports cost.  Trust me I like Volleyball, and I think it's great that we are continuing to do well, but I think it's important to put attendance into perspective with that sport right now.  Paid attendance is > than attendance, in the end.  With our athletic budget having been at the forefront of discussion for approximately the last 18 plus months, it's easy to gloss over the details and focus on the niceness of the story, but as those last several months have shown us, we had best be concerned about bottom line numbers.

Now with that little qualifier out of the way.  I will be following and cheering for our success today.
