I hope that joke never gets old.

I think we can all agree the offense needs to show a bit more this year in terms of production and creativity. Keaton was a great game manager and did what he was asked, particuarly not turning the ball over. His replacements are going to add a spark to the offense, but we'll likely have to deal with a few more turnovers. If the defense stays healthy, I'm OK with that. However the majority of that will hinge on the OL coming together. Without that, playcalling will continue to be pretty straightforward and frustrating.

Keaton also didn't have a receiver essentially the last 2 years that had enough speed to drive safeties away from the line of scrimmage.  Also, Keaton in his career, had some fantastic designed TD runs.  We've also, had some dreadful drops at times (at Bowling Green, Carr, makes a very good catch, but drops the conversion).  should an interception count against a QB when it hits a receiver in the hands and is dropped or deflected and picked?  That happened more than a couple times over the last few years. (Last year GM 1 v Utah)  I agree that Keaton often did what he could within the framework of the offense.

I really don't want to get in this argument of offensive philosophy, but in regards to mentioning that all these Big Sky teams spread it out and throw it,  and that Santiago should easily have been an all league player the past few years at RB, that may be true.  Let's keep in mind 2 years ago North Dakota was the team on top with it's balanced, if not at times vanilla attack.  And last year Weber State proved that in the end they most likely were the class of The Big Sky with a very similar offensive approach of being physical, limiting mistakes, etc... and you combo it with solid defense,  that's a formula that seems to be effective.  Maybe it's not always the most aesthetically pleasing offense, but I just want to win.  When North Dakota wins I'm happy.  Whether it be with 2 special team scores and a defensive score with no scores from the offense or if/when the offense were to put up 5 TDs.  As long as they win.

In the end, I'm with you, as the numbers seem to indicate, offensively North Dakota hasn't been nearly as bad as many of us think.  Would some improvement help? I would certainly think so. And hopefully we'll see it this season.

If the Fighting Hawks are to lose at any time, I reserve the right to blame everyone;)

  2. So reading the tea leaves, from the Herald takeaways.  It sounds like it won't matter who is behind center, or running the ball or for that matter calling the plays, if the O-Line doesn't take a step forward.  Not the end of the world, right now as there is still time to get that sorted out.  Sounds as if Vrede will add depth to a ILB unit that was decimated a year ago, and that's great to hear.  Clearly, the D is ahead of the offense, which often is the case at this time of year. I hope we have a huge year defensively.  I love to get loud when UND is on D, at the Alerus Center.

  3. I don’t understand that logic of (better overall crowds).  When there’s been doubleheaders in the past there have been plenty of people thta leave after the women’s game and some that arrive for the Men’s.  I can’t blame them.  Our family could very well be making that choice.  And for those that buy single game tickets and would have gone to both anyway. Now they just have to buy one to get both.

  4. I’m going to fall into the minority and say I absolutely loathe doubleheaders.  My family and I just don’t have the interest to hangout at the venue for 5 plus hours.  I actually liked the mirrored scheduling of the Big Sky.  We did go to more Men’s  games than Women’s, however we always knew that one or the other was going to be home one week to the next and with a single game we would get out at a decent hour.

On a purely superficial note, doubleheaders to me, shout D2.  Wasn’t that what we were trying to leave behind.  And on an observational note, considering how in recent times our athletic department has to be mindful of every penny, a single gate (doubleheader) cannot be all that enticing as compared to having seperate gates?   Not really surprised how The Summit probably wanted to make a statement and put all our potential big ticket games on Wednesdays.  I expect we will see some  similarly interesting things happen when we join The Valley for Football.

I’m excited to get to a few road games now that we have rejoined our former NCC brethren, and rekindling some rivarly spark.  The schedule however leaves a lot to be desired.  And doubleheaders, I was hoping for the most part, they would remain in an era gone by.  I’m still hoping for that to be the case.

  5. Always a fan of players who also wrestled in H.S.   That can be a useful skill when it comes to football.  Plus, there is almost a singular focus that wrestlers seem to be able to have in their training, and here's hoping those tools will translate into a player that evolves into a solid contributor here at North Dakota.

I agree, but he literally managed to hop on a plane and sign one for USD immediately after being hired though. Very strange. Will be interesting to see if it is a one-off or they grab a few more.

This irritates me.   What was he doing while he was here? Obviously shopping himself to others, because he must not have had time to get us in the Aussie pool.  I think the new head coach at USD has had previous connection with Australia players before too, but that the entire fact that USD gets an Aussie player as soon as our former assistant arrives in Vermillion, stinks in my opinion.

I'm hoping these international players can have an Harald Frey, Venky Jois, Bogdan like impacts and careers here.

    verses a Rolls-Tyson

Haha, very sad but true.  I hope so too.

  8. I'm guessing the Men will be trying to play as many big money games as they can this year in order to try do that again next year.  That certainly was a benefit for the team that went to the dance.

"After football is discontinued, HSU’s athletics program will include 11 sports: men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s track & field, crew, softball, and volleyball."

I smell a Title 9 lawsuit coming on behalf of the men.  Men's sports will be underrepresented at HSU, 7 women's sports & 4 men's sports.  I hope they plan on adding some men's sports to offset the loss of football.

Probably not much there for a Title 9 suit, as the student body at Humboldt is 56% Women, 44% Men.  Now with football out, the athletic opportunities provided probably fit the representation of the student body even better.

  10. Considering how many recruits that assistant from Australia brought in... zero.  If this guy as able to bring anyone over from Europe, that will be a step forward in regards to the recruiting efforts between the 2 international coaches we've had over the last few years.  Whether any of the player(s) he brings across the pond will be any good is another question entirely.   I'm hopeful, yet skeptical.

    Welcome to North Dakota, Dani!

Penn St, Montana, Mt St, E Wash and Idaho are known to be on the schedule.

Really? I'm surprised that there would be that many Big Sky teams on the schedule.  I realize there is the scheduling agreement with the Big Sky, but I figured that it would be 1 home game and 1 road game with a Big Sky program(s) and that would be about it.  That would be great if there is more than just the 2 though.

  12. Actually, setting aside what is put at center court.  The only thing I don’t like is the permanent Volleyball lines. I like VB at UND and go to some matches but actually don’t see VB lines on too many D1 basketball courts.  Makes UND seem a little small.  High Schoolish even.  I think programs that utilize venues for both BB & VB they tape lines down for matches so the lines are removable.  Just my humble opinion.

  13. I will be curious to see what time UND puts those Sunday matches at.  I can't imagine they will want to go head to head when a Viking's game is on.  Or maybe that really doesn't matter?  Of course opponents that play here on Sunday will want to get back home to where ever at a reasonable time on Sunday, so their student athletes will be able to be in class on Mondays.   Just a little glimpse how we as fans will have to get used to a new routine in The Summit as opposed to The Big Sky.  I'm sure with basketball there will be some scheduling things to get used to  as well.

  14. That doesn't sound official to me.  Yes, I would agree it sounds like UND will be involved in the challenge...but it sounds as if the writer is just spit balling potential match ups.  At least there is potential for more D1 non conference home games, which if recent history has shown, are almost impossible to schedule here in Grand Forks.

  15. What will this look like in North Dakota?

What will the outlook be? Will this be like when I went to the UK, and could walk into any number of sports betting joints and place a wager on the entire spectrum of sports?

    This will be fascinating.

This will frustrated the heck out of the NCAA no doubt.

From what I was told Davidson was only a shooting coach.  No recruiting or scouting.  WTF?

They will be just fine without him.

I believe Davidson, was a full assistant with full responsibilities.  He was a national team shooting coach, I think. In fact during the National Tournament season, Ralston  mentioned on a broadcast that Coach Davidson was unbeaten in all his scouts that season.  I'm guessing each assistant gets certain teams to scout and prepare the game plan for each of their games during the season during.  In fact in every pre-game show he visits with the assistant who has built the game plan and done all the video work for that night's opponent, and gives info during the interview of what they've seen from the opponent.  This would make me think he does the standard assistant's role.  But I may be wrong, as I don't know all the behind the scenes duties of assistants.

  17. This Davidson to USD, does rub me the wrong way in a couple of ways now.  1.  I don't like to see our staff pilfered by what will be starting this year as a conference rival.  2. I'm concerned that what I was told by someone close to the program, that USD, offered a significant pay hike that we couldn't come close to.  If that's the case, we might be in trouble for the foreseeable future if we hope to retain assistants.  Basketball at USD is there baby, and I could understand why an assistant would be tempted to go there...but it is also Vermillion, and that would maybe be a tough choice, between here and there.  But if he's getting a big pay bump and we can't compete, I can't fault anyone including Coach Davidson for looking out for themselves and their family, but I also don't like it as we are A. going to have to compete against him  to get to where UND wants to go in the Summit (he knows our philosophies and how we typically adjust), and B it indicates that as far as budgets for a sport like basketball in The Summit-- we are chasing, and that is never a great place to be going into a new conference.

  18. I'm not sure we have to abide by the Root windows anymore since UND is officially out of the Big Sky.  I would echo Big Green, and guess that it's because Midco has both Football  & Hockey that day.  Personally, I like the 2 p.m.'s as the season wears on.   Don't mind a Thursday night or a homecoming/potato bowl that is later in the day due to parades etc... But I do tend to like the early afternoon games of either 1 or 2p especially in October & November. (I'm probably in the minority in this)
