  1. The boathouse is opening for the season this Saturday: http://groundupadventures.com/bhotr. I think there are free rentals on Monday (Memorial Day).
  2. That's exactly what we went through to get sharrows on University Ave in Grand Forks--people claiming that somehow a bike lane would cause drivers to hit kids going to school.
  3. Rather than hoping for infrastructure to catch up, I'd really like to see more infill development. The apartments going in by the railyard by UND and Columbia? Awesome. The apartments just north of Columbia Mall? Great. The north end has space for new development; Gateway could certainly be turned into a better home for businesses than it is now.
  4. @siouxjoy, you've got a whole year to train! There's a relay category as well, so you can alternate swimming.
  5. No more than any other big river. It doesn't have an "undercurrent" that flows separately from the surface; the most dangerous parts of the Red were the lowhead dams which were easy to go over and get pushed under, but those near Grand Forks have been removed. This question comes up every year; here's a link to an article about the swimming ordinance and safety from last year: http://www.crookstontimes.com/article/20130705/NEWS/130709787?template=printart
  6. Meh. Two years of swimmers plus sending everyone (700 people) across the Red three times during the mud run last year with no ill effects.
  7. This is a long shot, but I'm trying to reach outside my own circle of friends to find some more help for this weekend. END-WET, a 36-mile downriver swim in the Red River, is on Saturday, and with the river going up into flood stage again we're trying to get a few more power boats on the water. We're not anticipating an increased level of danger for the swimmers (except that the swim might be too easy with this much flow), but better safe than sorry. If you have a boat you'd be interested in driving up and down the river for a while on Saturday, we'll cover fuel money. If you're interested or know someone who might be, please get in touch with Andy at endracing@gmail.com or 701-330-0709. Some background: This is the third year we've held this event. It was 27 miles (Grand Forks to Oslo) in 2012 and 2013, but we moved the start point to Belmont Park/Frog Point this year to make it 36 miles, which we hear is the longest swim in North America at the moment. As far as these swims have been, we've had about 25 people each year and they've all finished. It's pretty nuts.
  8. I'd love to see them play outdoors, and I'm not even a football fan. Anything to give the stadium some action, although I assume they'd have to renovate the interior to some degree.
  9. From Andy Magness at ENDracing: More information on the race can be found at http://endracing.com/end-wet. We had 12 solo swimmers and three teams of two last year. Before anyone asks, there were no injuries, near-drownings, diseases, or infections picked up from being in the river for that long. You can fill out this form if you'd like to volunteer. If you're interested in volunteering from a motorboat, that will work as well.
  10. I don't know if anyone here is an avid (or even halfhearted) paddler, but this race is going on next month and there are still a bunch of paddling spots open: http://www.endracing.com/p/end-wet.html The big draw is (amazingly) the swim race, which has 13 people signed up to swim 27 miles in the Red River of the North from Grand Forks to Oslo, MN. The whole roster is here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sV2HIEtq8BBuRjqfkCpOR54IXFu784dPdYswtspyNzA (For appropriateness' sake, UND alumnus Erik Sanders was captain of the UND Cycling Team before he graduated.)
  11. Just an update on this site, it's still active and is listing 150+ upcoming events. http://northernplainsathletics.com I'm curious, since I've been sort of balking at some race entry fees lately: what's the highest you'd pay to do a race? Does it matter if it's directly "for charity" or not?
  12. http://www.northernplainsathletics.com This site is generally for North Dakota, South Dakota, northern Minnesota and southern Manitoba, but really it could include anywhere an athlete from Grand Forks might believably travel to go to a race (reason being, I'm in Grand Forks right now). - Running (road and trail) - Cycling (road, mountain, track, cyclocross) - Triathlons - Skiing - Adventure racing - Paddling (canoe, kayak, paddleboard) - Others as needed Some features: - Anyone can post upcoming events - You can bookmark events or say you're competing - Comment on how past events have gone off - Map-based search means you can find races close to you, faster - RSS feed of all events added to the site, or only those within 50 miles The site is primarily set up as a calendar for individual sports because these events have schedules that change from year to year and each person's schedule isn't carved in stone from the beginning of the season (as would be the case for summer softball). Feedback is always appreciated.
  13. We are also looking for volunteers to come out to help marshal corners. If you have a few hours to space on Saturday or Sunday morning, we could use your help. These events take a lot of manpower and we wouldn't be able to pull them off without help from people outside the club. Information is here: http://talk.campusdakota.com/index.php?topic=5765.0 There will be a mandatory volunteer meeting on Thursday at 6 pm on the second floor of Memorial Union.
  14. That's Summit League Indoor Track and Field. Indoor and outdoor track are two different sports.
  15. If you're getting into the sport of cycling and would like to try your hand at a full weekend of racing action, this is your chance to represent ALONGSIDE our very own University of North Dakota cycling team at their home race weekend. Non-collegiate races will be going on, so no matter what experience level you are, if you want to race, come on out! Full information is available at http://www.und.edu/org/cycling UND Race Weekend Poster OFFICIAL by MatthewBK, on Flickr
  16. If you want to see the University of North Dakota cycling team take on cyclists from schools as far away as Kansas, on our own turf, come on by! Complete information is available at http://www.und.edu/org/cycling UND Race Weekend Poster OFFICIAL by MatthewBK, on Flickr
  17. A lot of people do, but it's not entirely necessary. Some people run on regular mountain bike tires, some run studded mountain bike or cyclocross tires, and some ride 4" tires on snow bikes. The race in Fargo this past Sunday had 63 riders and was a blast, so we're hoping for a good turnout.
  18. UND Cycling Club's second annual winter race! All information is available at http://talk.campusdakota.com/index.php?topic=5553.0
  19. Sigma Gamma Epsilon is the national earth science honorary, not another fraternity. The local chapter, Beta Zeta, has historically been one of the strongest chapters. In case anyone didn't know, Beta Zeta Chapter of Sigma Gamma Epsilon leads tours of Leonard Hall, home of the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering, for school groups (public and home-schooled) throughout the academic year--several hundred children annually. As mentioned above, there is more to these tours than just the lobby museum; the kids always enjoy hands-on activities more than listening to someone lecture at them. If you haven't taken the chance to bring your kids through or if they've gone to visit the Triceratops skull without you on a class trip, this is a great chance to visit as a family and learn about the earth.
  20. The UND Cycling Club will be hosting a 3-race cyclocross series in Grand Forks beginning on Halloween. Although these will be competitive events, anyone is welcome to race in the beginner category, whether or not you have a 'cross-specific bicycle. Cash prizes will go out to the series champions, and we'll be giving away schwag at every race! The first race is on Halloween and will include a prize for best costume worn during the race. For those unfamiliar with cyclocross, the courses are very small and tight, offering great views for spectators or photographers--you can even bring the kids along to throw marshmallows at the riders! Official details and announcements are here: http://talk.campusdakota.com/index.php?topic=5388
  21. UND Cycling 2010 Jerseys and bib shorts are for sale at The Ski & Bike Shop. More information is available here: http://talk.campusdakota.com/index.php?topic=5143 They will ship if you give them a call. I know they've already done a second order this spring (after the initial team order), so I assume as long as people keep calling, they'll keep ordering more. UND Cycling Club gets a cut of the profit, so thanks for your support!
  22. Thanks for the support, dagies. The event went off pretty well, only one crash (at the end of the men's A/B/C road race) except for someone sliding out during warmups on Sunday (both MN riders, as far as I know, and both okay). We don't know the full results for conference points yet. UND Results: Men's A RR: 3rd Mariuscz Czarnomski Men's C RR: 1st Erik Sanders, 2nd Chad Boehm Men's D RR: 6th David Boura Team Time Trial: 1st Division II (Chad Boehm, Logan Evans, Erik Sanders) Men's A Criterium Championship: 3rd Mariuscz Czarnomski Men's C Criterium Championship: 1st Chad Boehm, 2nd Logan Evans, 3rd Erik Sanders Women's C Criterium Championship: 1st Tiffany Czarnomski The full results (prime points and all that) are available here: http://talk.campusdakota.com/index.php?topic=5164.0 Mariuscz will be headed to collegiate road nationals this weekend in Madison, Wisconsin as an individual rider; he may be accompanied by other teammates for the TTT.
  23. No cycling fans here, I'm guessing? Even if the team won the conference championship in the team time trial two weekends ago in Nebraska and C riders Chad Boehm and Erik Sanders went 1,2 in the road race championship last weekend in the heart of Gopher country?
  24. For the first time in a number of years, UND cycling will be hosting a road race weekend for the North Central Collegiate Cycling Conference (have to throw the conference name in there since I know how crazy some people are about that ). We're hoping for as much community support as we can get since the team will be occupied with racing and the club won't be able to handle everything ourselves. The UND cycling team receives no athletic funding; all competition is supported by money from SAC, sponsors, and for the most part by the athletes themselves. When: May 1st and 2nd, 2010 Where: -Road race, west of Merrifield, ND, 10 AM Saturday -Team Time Trial, west of Merrifield, ND, 4 PM Saturday -Criterium (Conference Championship race), Ralph Engelstad Arena, 10 AM Sunday Who is needed: -Homestay hosts (see http://talk.campusdakota.com/index.php?topic=5112.0) -Course marshals and registration help -Photographers (see http://talk.campusdakota.com/index.php?topic=5067.0) -Spectators and UND fans The official race flyer, location information, and press release are available here: http://talk.campusdakota.com/index.php?topic=5109.0 Please reply with any questions to this thread or the topics on the UND Cycling message board.
