    Pandora's Box

Because as it stands now, UND has no authority to do what the NCAA wants it to do. The State Board of Higher Education, which governs all of North Dakota's institutions of higher learning, mandated that UND retain the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo. The NCAA says here: In UND's case, it doesn't have any more control over its nickname than the state flag because it must follow what the SBoHE says. The State of North Dakota might want to know what business a private association has in attempting to overturn the decsion of a state government. According to the latest polls, I'd expect that most state taxpayers wouldn't have a problem with it.

Just a thought: What if the State of North Dakota enters the lawsuit on UND's side?

    Pandora's Box

My position throughout this debate has been that in a free and democratic society, a minority of a minority should not be allowed to dictate to the majority. The [url="http://www.in-forum.com/articles/index.cfm...59
  6. And don't forget that last year, the Sioux scored 8 goals on 24 SOG.
  7. Look in the "Sioux Name" forum. There's a wealth of updated information there.
  8. Finally, two days late, the Fargo Forum has a story about the decision made by the United Tribes of North Dakota. There was no story about this in today's Herald. [url="http://www.in-forum.com/articles/index.cfm?id=102602
  9. Sept. 10, 2005 From the Grand Forks Herald: NCAA seeks more information on UND-Sioux issue On Friday's WDAZ news at 6, they talked to 20 enrolled members of the Spirit Lake Tribe. Fifteen supported UND's use of the Sioux name, three opposed it and two didn't have an opinion.

    Uniform Designs

If the worst comes to pass and UND has to change its name, I have a concept developed for new football uniforms based on Sicatoka's idea. I envision black helmets with the crossed cavalry sabres as the logo. I just hope this would be politically correct enough for the NCAA.
  12. I agree. The Forum's poll might have been a bit of a bump in the road, though.
  13. I'll let someone else do that. Aniak High School must have one of the most politically incorrect logos in use anywhere. A crossed rifle and spear? A white guy and a native staring each other down? I don't even know where to begin feeling offended.
  14. Who knows? It just seems to me that with as much media attention as this meeting generated, a unanimous vote against UND at the end of the event would have created a bigger news splash.
  15. It seems like this would be big news. Neither The Fargo Forum, the Grand Forks Herald nor the Bismarck Tribune have anything on it. And I'd think it would be all over the AP.
  16. Good question. The Native American Times a short time ago posted an article similar to the KFYR-TV story. Is the NA Times repeating the KFYR story or is this something different? Considering that this vote supposedly took place yesterday, it seems strange that no other media outlets are reporting on it. My e-mails asking for clarification from UND and KFYR-TV have gone unanswered.
  17. From the 9/7/05 Achorage Daily News: Aniak residents stand fully by their Halfbreed mascot Aniak High students sporting Halfbreeds T-shirts
  18. Just wait'll the NCAA comes down on ESPN for daring to show the evil Sioux name and logo in a commercial.

  21. One aspect of the poll I wonder about is how different the results might be if it wasn't conducted in the middle of a big controversy about the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.
  22. Nobody ever does.
  23. I e-mailed KFYR-TV, but I haven't received any response.
