    UND v GVSU

Chappell was injured going into the USD game and he was banged up even more coming out of that game. So at what point do you recommend that Lennon started saving him for GVSU? Every time he carried the ball against USD, there was a risk that he'd be done for the season. Every time he touched the ball in the first half of the Winona game, there was a risk he'd be injured further. I don't see a single person arguing that Lennon is immune from bad decisions. I've heard Lennon himself admit to making bad decisions during the course of a game. I've criticized some of his decisions in the past. That has nothing to do with it. However, in this case, having heard Lennon's concern about WSU's offense going into the game, knowing the propensity of UND's defense to give up big plays and having heard his explanation for keeping Chappell in the game when the score was 20-2, I agree with his logic and reasoning. I regret that Chappell got hurt. I regret that Murray and Brady got hurt because all those injuries made UND's offense one-dimensional against GVSU. But neither Lennon nor any of us knew at what point Chappell would be done for the season or whether the Sioux would win the last time he touched the ball against WSU.

That is a statement you can confidently make using 20/20 hindsight. As I said in a previous post, using that same hindsight I could argue that Chappell was banged up at USD and shouldn't have played at all against Winona. I can then claim to be even more of a coaching genius because I would have given him a week off to recuperate before GVSU.

I'm not going to admit anything because I dont' think Lennon made a mistake. Everyone who thinks he did is relying on the 20/20 hindsight of "if we only knew then what we know now." They are entitled to their opinions, of course. However, if I put myself in Lennon's shoes in the third quarter and it's still anyone's game, I continue to run Chappell until he can't run any more or the game's out of reach. If WSU comes back for the win, saving Chappell for GVSU would have been a complete waste. And that would have been a real mistake.

    UND v GVSU

Duing last Wednesday's Fighting Sioux Coaches' Show, Lennon provided a very logical and reasonable explanation as to why Chappell was still in the game in the second half. If I remember correctly, the score was 20-2 the last time Chappell ran the ball and helped set up Dressler's TD run to make it 27-2. Up until that point, UND had dodged a couple bullets that could have let the Warriors back into the game. Getting another TD on the board to put the game out of reach was important. All it would have taken was one big play, a two-point conversion and suddenly it's a 20-10 game with lots of time left and Winona having the momentum. And all the armchair quarterbacks would have been criticizing Lennon for not playing Chappell when he was still capable of running the ball, which he proved he was up until the last time he ran.

As I recall, Chappell never played when the Sioux were ahead by 30. I believe the last time he was on the field, the score was 20-2.
  15. It's always so cool when fans of other teams come to this board to tell us what we should and shouldn't be discussing.

    UND v GVSU

Let's face it. To have had a chance against GVSU, we needed our offense healthy and firing on all cylinders. Pass protection is easier when your opponent respects the run, but the Sioux couldn't run the ball today. UND became a one-dimensional team at a time of the season it could least afford to. Go into the game with Chappell and/or Murray healthy and the outcome could easily have been different. I've been among those bashing the defense, but to put it everything into proper perspective, we should remember that UND's defense was very good or good enough against all but the elite teams of Division II. It wasn't the attacking, physical, opportunistic Sioux defense we've seen in the past, but it was far from being a bad defense.

I agree, but the Lakers made the big plays when they needed to. It was the same story against UNO.

I am proud that our team didn't give up and pushed GVSU to the end. The Lakers are a better team and deserved to win.

It really hurt that we had two throws that didn't enable our receivers to run after the catch or get out of bounds.
