  1. 4 hour drive for the #1 team in the nation, and 2 1/2 hour drive from Mankato, and you can't give these tickets away. I'd be embarrassed if I was a fan of one of these teams. It's a little further for Duluth, so I guess they get a pass, but I'm surprised I guess. If it were other teams trying to sell to Sioux fans, they'd be gone in an instant.

  2. Hahaha, I was thinking the same thing. They should outlaw those things.

Not to get too off topic, but your picture below your name says North Dakota retires mascot. North Dakota has the Fighting Sioux name and logo, but no mascot that I am aware of. And, unfortunately, the nickname battle continues. I don't think anything has been permanently resolved.

  3. Anyone here have a theory why UND has developed great NHL forwards(Parise, Toews, Oshie, Stafford) over the last ten years or so but not D-men. Is Greene the only UND defenseman who plays regularly in the NHL or am I missing someone? Not meant as a flame post at all, just seems odd especially considering the fact that UND typically has a strong D-core.

It may have something to do with Hak wanting a defensemen to coach the defense??

  4. include me in that group that hasn't heard any nhl brass speak ill of hakstol? in fact, it's quite the opposite, most nhl people hold und and hak and company in high reguard.

  5. whether we like it or not, a large majority of the blue chip prospects are going the chl route. that is a fact. the problem is how do we combat the fallacy that the chl is a better path to the nhl? that is where the problem lies. both are good leagues and both have a proven track record of producing top end players, but the chl has no problem spreading lies and ignorance to try and get a step up on ncaa hockey. fact is, college hockey is catching up and more and more players are choosing that route. the people in the chl know this, and this is there way of again gaining the upper hand. there will always be the prospects who choose the chl over college hockey for some of the numerous reasons mentioned in this thread, but when you throw in the chl's dirty tactics on top of it, of course us college hockey fans (and probably coaches and colleges too) will get annoyed. It's not an even playing field because colleges can't fight back. And now that College Hockey Inc. let Paul Kelley go, it seems we are back to square one.

  6. Since it's the hot topic, and this conversation is continued in the Seth Jones thread, let's continue the convo here...

Many have been debating the pros and cons of going the CHL route over the NCAA route, especially after losing Miller, Koules and Matteau in the last year to them (plus plenty others across college hockey), so the question is why...

Money - I think helps the CHL, but I'm not convinced it's the major issue at hand.

Education - I think may be a major factor here. Alot of us tout the free education these kids get, and to some kids they see the value in that. But I think alot of these 16 and 17 year old kids probably feel that playing hockey without having to do school work is a huge bonus. Right or wrong, I think this is definately part of the issue.

Games - I am not sure the "more games" argument works for me. These kids at this point in their development NEED the weight room and training time to build onto their frames to play the real mans game (pro hockey)

Competition - NCAA is better competition, hands down. But some may think putting up crazy numbers against weaker competition will help their draft status more than learning against better competition?

I'm sure there are many other points to be made, so keep them coming. Hopefully NCAA hockey can continue to get better and attract the top hockey players to the game.

  7. To all of those throwing the rumors around... here is what I think may be a logical thought process. Eades was the main recruiter (i.e. always on the road) and in charge of the defense. Eades is, I would guess, around 50 years old? Maybe he didn't want to spend all of his time on the road recruiting? Maybe he asked Hak to have someone younger with more energy do all the traveling and recruiting? And like many have speculated, maybe Hak wants a defensemen in charge of the defense? And yes, it can be as simple as that. Restructuring responsibilities, like someone taking over the increased recruitment? I'm sure we will know more in the weeks to come, but I don't think it has to be a huge conspiracy theory, and I don't think we need to spread personal life rumors about a coach who was and is a Fighting Sioux through and through. Thank you for the great years coach Eades and best of luck in your future endevours! Go Sioux!

  8. i was a few seats away from York and Berenson, maybe i should have told them both to stick to their own recruiting grounds  red can have the usndt and their chl loving players and york apparently dominates with the players from out east

  9. Toews is just as liable being one big hit way from never playing hockey again. Toews has had 2 concussions in the last 2 years or less.

this is true, and he missed some time due to them, but he didn't miss an entire season. concussions are like any career ending injury, you can't predict when, or even what will cause it. crosby's most recent relapse this season seemed to come from some pretty innocuous contact.

  10. I know it is weird to read that but here are the US defenseman from the 2010 Olympics, I included alternates as well. Rafalski, Suter, Martin, Komisarek, E. Johnson, Orpik, J. Johnson, Whitney, Gleason, Niskanen, Hainsey, Goligoski, Carle, Scuderi. As you can see, not a great list. The only absolute lock I see is Ryan Suter and Keith Yandle, who was not even named an alternate last time. If Jones keeps progressing he could make the team. Toews was 20, and on Team Canada which was even more impressive but a generational talent? I don't think so. The only player in the league that someday might be considered a generational talent is Sidney Crosby, but he isn't there yet.

we will have to agree to disagree, on both jones and toews. crosby is sick, when he is actually playing, but if i'm starting an nhl franchise, i build it around toews. there are some better scorers in the nhl than toews, but he's the best hockey player in the league (i might think differently IF Crosby was healthy, but he's one big hit from never playing hockey again)

  11. ...and I fully expect to be cheering him on for Team USA at the 2014 Olympics, and no that is not a typo, I really do believe he will be on the US Olympic team at age 19.

There are not many (if any) 19 year old dmen who will play on an olympic team. Toews was 20 (I think?), a forward, and a once in a generation talent. I'm not saying it's impossible, but I wouldn't hold my breath...

  12. If Chicago could trade Kane and a second-pair defenseman for a top pair defenseman and a second-line scorer, I think they'd be wise to do it. They'd gain defense and lose some of Kane's off-ice antics and distractions.

It be interesting to see what Chicago and Buffalo (Kane's hometown) could work out for mutual benefit.

i like kane as a player. and by the contract they gave him (same as toews contract) i would say chicago likes him too. he hasn't had any off ice disiplinary issues has he? other than wanting his change back from a cabbie? but if we're playing the what if game... kane and one of the dmen other than seabrook or keith for tyler myers and stafford. works for me :) the more sioux on a team the better.

  13. One thing that kind of pisses me off is that no regionals are anywhere near our region next year. The farthest west a regional comes is Grand Rapids, MI. Every regional next season is in the eastern time zone

oh no, the goofs might acutally have to leave the vicinity of the cities in march next year... whats a poor girl to do ;)

that will make for some pi$$ poor attendence though...

  14. Hey fellas - long time reader of these boards; great info out here. :) First time poster though - be gentle.

Does anyone know the situation with Colton St. Clair? I know there were issues with him coming in this past year but is it still a possibility to see him suit up for the 2012-2013 season?

I believe it was an eligibility issue because of an accredidation issue with the online classes he was taking. He was enrolled all year at UND, so I would assume he will be ready and eligible come the start of next season.

  15. ice arena man is correct, only beer in the suites at the frozen four last year. and i would assume the same for this regional since it is an NC$$ event. i say we all meet up at the Fighting Sioux pregame for a few beforehand. i am dragging my cousin, a goofer fan, along... don't feel obligated to be nice :D

heres the pregame info (didn't see if it was posted somewhere yet?)...

UND Fans attending the NCAA Regional games in St. Paul, MN this weekend are invited to join the UND Alumni Association and UND Athletics for pregame parties beginning 2 hours prior to any game that UND is playing. McGovern’s will open at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and will keep the tent open after the games, giving priority entrance to North Dakota fans. The events will be held in the tent outside of Patrick McGovern’s Pub, which is walking distance from the Xcel Energy Center.

    Patrick McGovern’s Pub Pregame Parties: 225 7th St. West Saturday: 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (Game time – 12:30 p.m.) St. Paul, MN 55102 Sunday: 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. (Game time – 4:30 p.m.)* *Only if UND wins on Saturday afternoon

All UND alumni, family and friends are invited to attend this free event filled with a DJ, cash bars, the UND Pride of the North Band and cheer squad and much more! A full menu will also be available inside the pub. We hope to see you this weekend as we flood the streets of St. Paul in UND green and cheer our team on to victory!

  16. The best part about this regional is that there will be atmosphere, and very good atmosphere. So many times, we have seen a couple thousand fans in some crappy AHL arena, after playing at the Ralph and at the Final Five previously. I think the gopher fans cheering against us, and the droves of Sioux fans cheering for us will energize the teams.

I was in Green Bay last year, and the atmosphere was horrible, but at least the Sioux won 2 games. This weekend should be crazy! Lets Go Sioux!!

  17. let's not let facts get in the way... that poll is probably from the 70s before al gore invented the interwebs  and back to the original design posted, nothing will replace the sioux logo, but it is what it is, and i think your design is pretty awesome. simple yet a very nice looking jersey. i would vote for it, on a random internet poll, from the 80s ;)

  18. If Jones comes, I think Gleason stays at forward and Panzarella is the odd man out unless injury. That lineup would be pretty sick next season, but lets finish this one out strong. I still think this year is Hak and company's best. GO SIOUX!!

  19. Does anybody know anything about luke voltin...? I really hope he doesn't end up playing for north dakota, kid went to my elementary school and from what ive heard from some highschool classmates he's a screw up. He got kicked off the US team.

some considered matt frattin and bochenski screw ups too. i would reserve judgement until he is on campus and with the team and coaching staff.

  20. Toughest game i've ever had to watch in my life.

I agree that was one of the tougher ones to watch, especially considering UND was considered the favorite at the frozen four, but I still vaguely remember (due to a high quantity of alcohol) the a$$kicking BC gave us at the ff in Denver. That one stung.

  21. Bjugstad is the real deal. He's huge, a good skater and had a nose for the back of the net. He will be playing in the NHL in the next year or two. As to the debate of the best college prospect, I still think Jaden Schwartz is a beast waiting to break out, although he hasn't really lit the world on fire this year. And Brock Nelson is in that conversation too, though he still needs 25 pounds of muscle before he's nhl ready imo.
